10 Best Camping Places in Uttarakhand: Exact Locations, Daily Costs & Peak Seasons

Introduction

Camping in the Garhwal and Kumaon regions of the Himalayas offers clean air, clear skies, and front-row seats to snow-capped peaks. Whether you want to pitch a dome tent near the Ganga in Shivpuri or camp under the stars on the high alpine meadows of Dayara Bugyal, Uttarakhand has options for every style and budget.

Over the past eight years, I have pitched tents across Uttarakhand's ridge lines and valleys. The landscape changes rapidly from sub-tropical riverbeds to arctic alpine meadows above 11,000 feet. Planning your trip requires exact details on forest permissions, seasonal weather shifts, and transport logistics.

This guide breaks down the top camping spots in Uttarakhand. You will find exact locations, true costs in Indian Rupees (INR), route maps, local contact details, and practical survival tips without fluff.

Quick Facts About Camping in Uttarakhand

• State: Uttarakhand, Northern India
• Best Regions for Camping: Garhwal (Rishikesh, Chopta, Tehri, Uttarkashi) & Kumaon (Binsar, Mukteshwar, Pangot)
• Average Cost: ₹1,200 to ₹7,500 per person per night (includes meals and basic stays)
• Trek Camping Altitude Range: 1,100 ft (Rishikesh) to 12,500 ft (Kedarkantha / Bedni Bugyal)
• Forest Rules: Camping right on alpine meadows (Bugyals) like Bedni and Ali is prohibited by High Court rulings; campsites are positioned at designated buffer zones (e.g., Sari village, Baniyakund, or forest borders).
• Nearest Major Airports: Dehradun (Jolly Grant Airport - DED) & Pantnagar Airport (PGH)
• Nearest Railheads: Rishikesh (YNRK), Haridwar (HW), and Kathgodam (KGM)

Best Time to Visit

Uttarakhand has two main camping windows each year. The timing depends on whether you prefer warm river beaches, green alpine meadows, or snow-covered winter camps.

• March to June (Spring & Summer): Ideal for river rafting camps in Rishikesh, high-altitude treks like Dayara Bugyal, and hill-station camping in Kanatal or Mukteshwar. Temperatures range between 15°C and 30°C in valleys, while mountain campsites stay cool at 10°C to 20°C.
• October to November (Autumn): Offers crisp air and high visibility. Expect clear night skies perfect for astrophotography. Daytime temperatures sit around 15°C, dropping to 3°C–5°C at night in spots like Chopta.
• December to February (Winter Snow Camping): Best for snow camps in Chopta, Kedarkantha, and Nag Tibba. Sub-zero temperatures are standard (-5°C to -10°C), so proper sub-zero sleeping gear is essential.
• Monsoon (July to September): Avoid high-altitude forest camps due to landslide risks, flash floods, and dense leech activity. Rishikesh river camps are closed by government orders during these months.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistakes to Avoid:

• Camping directly on high-altitude meadows (Bugyals): The Uttarakhand High Court strictly banned overnight stays inside vulnerable alpine meadows like Bedni and Dayara to prevent ecological damage. Pitch camp only in designated forest border zones.
• Ignoring Altitude Sickness (AMS): Ascending above 8,000 ft too quickly can cause headaches and nausea. Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol during night camps.
• Relying on UPI/Digital Payments: Mobile network coverage drops frequently past Rudraprayag or Uttarkashi. Always carry sufficient physical cash.
• Pitching Tents near Dry Riverbeds: Flash floods can strike mountain rivers suddenly during pre-monsoon showers. Pitch tents at least 100 meters away from riverbanks and high-water lines.
• Leaving Garbage Behind: Always practice "Leave No Trace." Pack out all plastic, foil, and non-biodegradable waste from your campsite.

Nearby Attractions

• Tungnath Temple: The world's highest Shiva temple, located 3.5 km above Chopta.
• Vashishta Gufa: A quiet meditation cave 21 km upstream from Rishikesh along the Ganga.
