10 Best Honeymoon Destinations in Uttarakhand for a Romantic Trip

Introduction

I’ve lost count of how many couples ask me if they should book a standard Goa package or head straight to Europe for their honeymoon. My answer is almost always the same: skip the jet lag and head up to the Himalayas. Over my 15 years as a travel writer, I’ve explored winding mountain passes and misty pine forests across India. Uttarakhand remains my absolute top recommendation for newlyweds.

Why? Because you get snow-capped peaks, luxury boutique cottages hidden in apple orchards, and crisp mountain air without emptying your bank account. Forget the overcrowded Mall Roads everyone talks about on generic travel blogs. I’m going to show you the real spots where you and your partner can actually enjoy some peace.

Quick Facts About Uttarakhand Honeymoons

• Ideal Trip Duration: 6 to 9 days to cover at least two destinations comfortably without spending your entire honeymoon in a cab.
• Average Daily Budget: ₹4,000 to ₹12,000 INR per couple depending on whether you stay in homestays or luxury resorts like The Clifftop Club in Auli.
• Primary Languages: Hindi, Garhwali, Kumaoni, and English in tourist hubs.
• Currency: Indian Rupee (INR). UPI is widely accepted, but keep ₹3,000 to ₹5,000 cash handy for remote valleys where mobile networks drop.

Best Time to Visit

Choosing when to go depends entirely on the vibe you want. If you want powdery snow and cozy nights by a fireplace, plan your trip between December and February. If you prefer blooming rhododendrons and pleasant weather for outdoor trekking, March to June is your sweet spot.

Pro Tip: Avoid July and August unless you love heavy monsoons. Landslides on the Rishikesh-Joshimath highway can disrupt your itinerary for days.

How to Reach Uttarakhand

Most international and domestic flights land at Jolly Grant Airport (DED) in Dehradun. From the airport, you can hire a private cab straight to Mussoorie (60 km, 2 hours) or Rishikesh (20 km, 45 minutes).

If you're heading to Kumaon regions like Nainital or Almora, Kathgodam is the nearest major railway station, sitting about 34 km away from Nainital. Trains like the Ranikhet Express from Delhi are overnight favorites for travelers.

Getting Around

Public buses are cheap, but they aren't built for a relaxed honeymoon. Renting a self-drive car from Dehradun or hiring a private chauffeur-driven SUV (like an Innova Crysta for roughly ₹3,500 to ₹4,500 per day) is the smartest move.

Mountain roads have tight hairpin bends. Unless you're an experienced hill driver, let a local professional handle the driving while you hold your partner's hand and look at the valley views.

Top 10 Honeymoon Destinations in Uttarakhand

Let’s dive into the absolute best honeymoon destinations in Uttarakhand. I've curated this list to balance well-known charm with serene escapes.

1. Auli

Known for its pristine ski slopes and panoramic views of Nanda Devi, Auli is paradise for snow-loving couples. Take the Auli Ropeway—one of the highest and longest in Asia—for breathtaking aerial views.

• Best For: Skiing, cable car rides, snow photography.
• Approx. Cost per Day: ₹6,000 - ₹15,000 INR.

2. Mussoorie

While the main Mall Road gets busy, staying in Charleville or Landour offers old-world British charm, cozy bakeries, and quiet walking trails.

• Best For: Colonial architecture, cafes, leisurely strolls.
• Approx. Cost per Day: ₹5,000 - ₹12,000 INR.

3. Nainital

Classic and romantic. Row a boat across Naini Lake at sunset, then walk up to Tibet Market for momos and street shopping.

• Best For: Lake boating, pleasant weather, romantic sunsets.

4. Chopta

Often called the 'Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand', Chopta is untouched and raw. It serves as the base for the Tungnath trek.

5. Ranikhet

If you want pine forests, orchards, and military quietness, Ranikhet is unmatched. Visit the Kumaon Regimental Centre Museum and enjoy the peaceful vibe.

• Best For: Golfing, pine walks, solitude.
• Approx. Cost per Day: ₹4,000 - ₹9,000 INR.

6. Lansdowne

One of the quietest hill stations, maintained by the Garhwal Rifles. No loud commercialism here—just silent oak forests and boating at Tiffin Top.

• Best For: Bird watching, peace, budget-friendly romance.

7. Mukteshwar

Perched high in the Kumaon hills, Mukteshwar offers jaw-dropping Himalayan panoramas and luxury cliffside villas.

8. Dhanaulti

Located just past Mussoorie, Dhanaulti is much quieter and features eco-parks surrounded by towering deodar trees.

• Best For: Eco-tourism, quiet weekend vibes.
• Approx. Cost per Day: ₹4,000 - ₹9,000 INR.

9. Kausani

Mahatma Gandhi called this place the 'Switzerland of India' due to its 300-km unobstructed view of the Himalayan peaks, including Trishul and Nanda Devi.

• Best For: Sunrise views, tea gardens.
• Approx. Cost per Day: ₹3,500 - ₹8,500 INR.

10. Jim Corbett National Park

For wildlife-loving couples, a jungle safari combined with a luxury riverside resort provides a thrilling alternative to standard mountain towns.

• Best For: Jeep safaris, luxury jungle resorts.
• Approx. Cost per Day: ₹6,000 - ₹18,000 INR.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

If you want to escape other tourists completely, add Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary to your itinerary. Stay at the Binsar Forest Retreat inside the sanctuary where electricity is solar-powered and mornings begin with barking deer outside your window.

Another hidden gem is Munsiyari, tucked away in the Pithoragarh district. It's a long drive from Kathgodam (about 7 hours), but the views of the Panchachuli peaks from your room make every bump in the road entirely worth it.

Accommodation Guide

Choosing the right stay sets the mood for your entire trip. Skip standard concrete hotels and opt for boutique properties or heritage cottages.

• Luxury Picks: The Roseate Ganges (Rishikesh) or Clifftop Club (Auli).
• Mid-Range Favorites: Rokeby Manor (Landour) or Chevron Rosemount (Ranikhet).
• Budget Gems: Local eco-lodges in Chopta or family-run homestays in Mukteshwar.

Where to Eat

Mountain food in Uttarakhand is simple, wholesome, and earthy. Don't leave without trying Madve ki Roti (finger millet flatbread) paired with Gulgath or Jhangore ki Kheer.

• Landour Bakehouse (Landour): Grab a hot chocolate and cinnamon bun where Ruskin Bond used to write.
• Chilly's Restaurant (Nainital): Great lakeside views with continental food.
• Pangat Restaurant (Jim Corbett): Excellent local Kumaoni thali.

Packing Checklist

Mountain weather changes in minutes. Pack smart so you aren't shivering on a viewpoint.

• Thermal innerwear (essential if visiting Auli or Chopta between October and March).
• Sturdy trekking shoes with good grip.
• Windproof and waterproof outer jackets.
• Moisturizer and lip balm (mountain air dries skin fast).
• Power bank and offline Google Maps downloaded.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Trying to cover Nainital, Mussoorie, Auli, and Jim Corbett all in a 5-day trip. You will spend 80% of your honeymoon inside a car. Pick two adjacent destinations max.

• Altitude Sickness: Auli sits at over 2,800 meters. Drink plenty of water and take it slow on day one.
• Road Safety: Avoid driving after dark in remote stretches due to fog and wildlife crossings.

Nearby Attractions

If you have extra days, consider pairing your Uttarakhand trip with a day or two in Rishikesh for river rafting, or a spiritual evening at Haridwar's Har Ki Pauri ghats.
