Introduction
If your main goal at Jim Corbett National Park is spotting a Royal Bengal Tiger, choosing the right safari zone makes all the difference. Jim Corbett spans over 1,280 square kilometers of thick forest, riverbeds, and open grasslands. It is divided into specific tourism zones to manage visitor traffic.
Not all zones offer equal tiger sighting probabilities. Dhikala Zone holds the top rank for overall sightings, especially if you stay overnight inside the forest. For day jeep safaris, Bijrani Zone and Dhela Zone offer the highest density of tiger activity per square kilometer.
In this guide, we break down each safari zone by sightings data, costs, landscape, and accessibility. You'll learn exactly which permit to secure depending on your travel dates and budget.
Quick Facts About Jim Corbett Safari Zones
Here is a direct head-to-head comparison of all operational safari zones in Jim Corbett National Park.
Pro Tip: If you cannot secure an overnight night-stay permit at Dhikala Forest Rest House, book a morning jeep safari in Bijrani or Dhela as your primary backup option.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Jim Corbett for tiger sightings is from April to June. During these hot summer months, temperatures cross 38°C. Dense jungle vegetation dries up, giving you clear visibility through the forest canopy.
Tigers frequently visit waterholes, the Ramganga River, and the Kosi River channels to cool off during peak daytime hours. Morning safaris (5:45 AM – 9:30 AM) and late afternoon safaris (3:00 PM – 6:30 PM) yield the most sightings.
If you prefer pleasant weather over extreme heat, visit between November and February. Visibility is lower due to lush post-monsoon foliage, but wildlife activity around grasslands remains consistent.

How to Reach Jim Corbett
Ramnagar is the primary gateway town to Jim Corbett National Park. All zone permits and safari vehicle registrations are centered here.
By Train
- Nearest Railway Station: Ramnagar (RMR).
- Best Train: Ranikhet Express (Train No. 15013) runs daily from Old Delhi Railway Station (DLI) directly to Ramnagar. Overnight journey takes about 6 hours.
- Alternative: Take a train to Kathgodam (60 km away) or Moradabad (85 km away) and hire an auto or taxi.
By Road
- From Delhi: ~245 km (approx. 5.5 to 6.5 hours via NH9). Route: Delhi -> Hapur -> Moradabad Bypass -> Kashipur -> Ramnagar.
- Bus Service: Regular Volvo and semi-sleeper buses run daily from Anand Vihar ISBT in New Delhi directly to Ramnagar Bus Stand.
By Air
- Nearest Airport: Pantnagar Airport (PGH), roughly 80 km away. Limited domestic flights operate here.
- International Gateway: Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) in Delhi (260 km).
Getting Around
Once in Ramnagar, internal movement relies on private local taxis and authorized 4x4 Maruti Gypsies.
- Safari Gypsies: Registered open-top 4x4 Gypsies carry up to 6 adults plus a driver and a mandatory forest guide. Day safaris strictly use registered Gypsies.
- Dhikala Canter: Open 16-seater 4x4 buses operated by the Forest Department. This is the only option for day visitors entering the Dhikala zone.
- Local Taxis: Taxis from Ramnagar station to resorts along Corbett Falls or Dhikuli cost between ₹800 and ₹1,500 depending on distance.
Pro Tip: Private vehicles are not allowed inside any core safari zone. You must hire a forest-authorized driver and guide.
Top Things to Do
1. Stay Overnight at Dhikala Forest Rest House (FRH)
Staying inside the Dhikala FRH complex gives you exclusive access to jeep safaris deep within the core zone. Tigers often cross the chaur (grassland) right outside the compound complex boundary fences.2. Take a Morning Jeep Safari in Bijrani
Bijrani features dense Sal forests mixed with open clearings. Driver tracks near Machaan and Ringora frequently reveal tiger footprints and alarm calls from spotted deer or langurs.3. Explore the Dhela Zone Watchtower
Situated inside the buffer area, Dhela's central watchtower overlooks a major waterhole. It is known for frequent sightings of female tigers with cubs.4. Visit Garjiya Devi Temple
Located on a huge rock in the middle of the Kosi River near the Garjiya gate, this iconic temple offers spectacular views of the valley and riverbed.Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path
- Sitabani Landscape Zone: Sitabani falls under the Forest Division rather than the Tiger Reserve. It requires no official permit quota, making it an easy last-minute option. It is famous for old forest temples, elephant herds, and peaceful trail rides.
- Marchula Bridge & Valley: Located 35 km from Ramnagar along the Kosi River basin. Ideal for quiet evenings away from mainstream resort crowds.
- Kyari Village Walk: A peaceful eco-tourism initiative where travelers can hike through rural Uttarakhand farmland, river streams, and edge forests with local naturalists.
Accommodation Guide
Pro Tip: Government Forest Rest Houses (Dhikala, Gairal, Bijrani, Jhirna) must be booked exactly 45 days in advance on the official Uttarakhand Forest Department portal.

Packing Checklist
- Neutral Clothing: Earthy tones like olive green, khaki, brown, or tan. Avoid bright yellows, reds, and whites.

- Binoculars: A pair of 8x42 or 10x42 binoculars helps spot hidden wildlife across open riverbeds.
- Layered Clothing: Mornings in winter (Nov–Feb) drop down to 5°C. Pack thermal wear, windbreakers, gloves, and woolen caps.
- Government ID Card: Bring the physical original ID (Aadhaar, Passport, Voter ID) used during permit booking. Forest guards double-check IDs at entry gates.
Safety Tips & Common Mistakes
Common Mistake #1: Booking through unauthorized middleman websites.
Always check that permit booking is done via official government channels or verified wildlife tour operators. Many scam portals charge 3x rates for fake permit printouts.
Common Mistake #2: Expecting a 100% sighting guarantee.
Wildlife tracking depends on luck, weather, alarm calls, and guide skill. Do not pressure your driver to break park speed rules or drive off-track.
Common Mistake #3: Choosing Durga Devi Zone for tigers.
Durga Devi is renowned for pristine scenic views and rare mountain birds, but tiger density here is much lower than in Dhikala or Bijrani. If tigers are your priority, avoid this zone.
Safety Tip: Never stand up inside the moving Gypsy or attempt to feed wild animals. Keep hands and camera gear inside the vehicle body frame at all times.
Nearby Attractions
- Pangot (80 km): A mountain hamlet near Nainital, ideal for observing rare bird species like Himalayan monals.
- Nainital (65 km): The famous lake district of Uttarakhand, featuring boat rides on Naini Lake and colder mountain weather.
- Corbett Museum, Kaladhungi (32 km): The historic home of legendary hunter-turned-conservationist Jim Corbett. Displays personal memorabilia, maps, and letters.
