Introduction
I’ve spent the last three years trading city traffic for the sound of pine trees rustling in Uttarakhand. If you're tired of joining Zoom calls from a cramped apartment, taking a workation in the Indian Himalayas is the ultimate antidote. But let’s be real—aesthetic mountain views mean nothing if your power cuts out during a client pitch.
I’ve tested the internet speeds, checked the inverter backups, and sampled the local chai across Kumaon and Garhwal. This guide cuts through the fluff to give you the absolute best places in Uttarakhand for a workation with mountain views, complete with real costs and connectivity details.
Quick Facts About Uttarakhand for Workation
- Primary Regions: Kumaon (Mukteshwar, Almora, Nainital district) and Garhwal (Dehradun district, Mussoorie, Chopta)
- Average Wi-Fi Speed: 40 Mbps to 150 Mbps (Fiber available in most commercial homestays)
- Mobile Networks: Jio and Airtel work best; BSNL is essential for remote pockets
- Currency: Indian Rupee (INR)
- Language: Garhwali, Kumaoni, Hindi, English
Best Time to Visit
You can work from the mountains year-round, but your experience depends heavily on the season. Spring (March to June) brings blooming rhododendrons and pleasant weather. Monsoon (July to August) is dramatic and green, but landslides can disrupt travel. Autumn and Winter (September to February) offer the crispest mountain views, though winters get freezing.
Pro Tip: If you hate power cuts, avoid visiting during peak monsoon (July-August) when heavy rains frequently knock out local transmission lines.

How to Reach Uttarakhand for Workation
Getting to your mountain desk depends on your starting point.
- By Air: Pantnagar Airport (PGH) serves the Kumaon region, while Jolly Grant Airport (DED) in Dehradun serves Garhwal. Both airports handle daily flights from Delhi.
- By Train: Kathgodam Railway Station is the gateway to Kumaon (Nainital, Mukteshwar, Almora). Dehradun and Haridwar stations serve the Garhwal region (Mussoorie, Dhanaulti).
- By Road: Overnight Volvo buses run daily from Delhi's ISBT Kashmiri Gate to Haldwani, Dehradun, and Rishikesh. From there, shared cabs or private taxis take you further up.
Getting Around
Once you’re settled into your homestay, getting around depends on your location. In hubs like Mukteshwar or Landour, walking is your best bet for daily errands. For weekend exploring, hiring a local cab or renting a scooty (available in Dehradun and Rishikesh for around ₹500/day) is ideal. Shared jeeps (Vikrams) operate fixed routes between mountain villages and cost as little as ₹30 to ₹100 per ride.
Top Things to Do
When you're off the clock, Uttarakhand offers endless ways to decompress.
- Sunrise Trail Walks: Start your day with a 5 AM walk through oak and rhododendron forests before logging in.
- Café Hopping: Test local roasteries like Cafe Peter Pan in Landour or Chirping Owl in Mukteshwar.
- Stargazing: Mountain villages lack light pollution, making astrophotography a rewarding weekend hobby.
- Village Trails: Hike down to local stream beds (gadheras) for quiet afternoon reading sessions.

Choosing the right stay makes or breaks a workation. You need backup power, ergonomic seating, and solid internet.
