Introduction
I’ve spent the last decade driving up winding mountain roads, sipping roadside chai in small Garhwali hamlets, and trekking through the high-altitude meadows of the Himalayas. Uttarakhand isn’t just a state; it’s an obsession. Whether you’re chasing the spiritual energy of Rishikesh or looking to disconnect completely in a wooden cabin in Mukteshwar, the variety here is staggering.
Most travelers stick to the standard triangle of Mussoorie, Nainital, and Haridwar. That’s a mistake. The real magic happens when you push further into Kumaon or cross high passes into Garhwal. I’ve put together this definitive guide covering the 25 best places to visit in Uttarakhand, packed with real logistics, exact pricing, and honest advice from someone who’s actually been there.
Quick Facts About Uttarakhand
Before we dive into the destinations, let’s look at the basic geography. Uttarakhand is split into two regions: Garhwal in the northwest and Kumaon in the southeast.
- Capital: Dehradun (Winter) / Bhararisain (Summer)
- Highest Peak: Nanda Devi (7,816 meters)
- Official Languages: Hindi, Garhwali, Kumaoni
- Major Rivers: Ganga, Yamuna, Alaknanda, Bhagirathi
Pro Tip: Don't underestimate travel times between regions. A distance of 150 kilometers can easily take 6 hours due to hairpin bends and occasional mountain traffic.
Best Time to Visit
Choosing when to visit depends entirely on what you want to do. If you’re heading up for Himalayan views and trekking, May to June and September to November are golden. If you want to see snowfall, January in places like Chopta or Dhanaulti is unbeatable.
Monsoons (July and August) are generally tricky due to frequent landslides on routes like Badrinath and Kedarnath. If you do travel then, stick to lower-altitude spots like Dehradun or Lansdowne.

How to Reach Uttarakhand
Getting to Uttarakhand is straightforward, thanks to decent air, rail, and road connectivity.
- By Air: Jolly Grant Airport (DED) in Dehradun is the primary hub. It connects directly to Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. Flights from Delhi cost around ₹3,500 to ₹7,000 one-way.
- By Rail: Major railway stations include Dehradun (DDN), Haridwar (HW), and Kathgodam (KGM). The overnight Ranikhet Express from Old Delhi to Kathgodam is a classic choice for Kumaon travelers.
- By Road: Overnight Volvo and state roadways (UKRTC) buses run daily from Delhi's Kashmiri Gate ISBT to Dehradun, Haldwani, and Rishikesh. Tickets range from ₹500 to ₹1,200.
Getting Around
Once you’re in the state, your transport options depend on your itinerary.
- Shared Jeeps (Vikrams/Sumos): The lifeblood of mountain transport. A seat from Dehradun to Mussoorie costs roughly ₹150.
- Private Cabs: Essential if you’re exploring remote areas. Expect to pay ₹3,500 to ₹5,000 per day for an SUV like a Ertiga or Scorpio including driver allowance and fuel.
- Buses: Ideal for budget travelers moving between major towns, though schedules can be unpredictable.
