Which Are the Best Places to Visit in Uttarakhand for First-Time Travellers?

Introduction

Uttarakhand is geographically split into two administrative divisions: Garhwal to the west and Kumaon to the east. First-time visitors often make the mistake of trying to cover both regions in a single short trip. You will spend most of your time stuck in winding mountain buses if you do that.

Garhwal gives you major spiritual hubs, rapid rivers, and high-altitude Himalayan views. Kumaon offers colonial lake towns, quiet pine forests, and views of the Nanda Devi range.

If you have 5 to 7 days, pick one region. This guide breaks down the absolute best entry points in Uttarakhand so you can plan a seamless first trip without hidden surprises or exhausted travel days.

How to Reach Uttarakhand

Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun connects daily with Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Pantnagar Airport serves as the gateway to the Kumaon region (Nainital, Corbett).

By Train

• For Garhwal: Take the Dehradun Vande Bharat Express (Train #22457) or Dehradun Shatabdi (Train #12017) from New Delhi to Haridwar/Dehradun. Travel time is around 4.5 to 6 hours.

Direct Volvo AC buses run continuously from ISBT Kashmiri Gate in Delhi to Rishikesh, Dehradun, and Haldwani. Tickets cost between ₹500 and ₹1,200 per seat.

Pro Tip: If driving your own vehicle from Delhi to Rishikesh, take the new Delhi-Dehradun Expressway corridor sections to bypass traditional bottlenecks at Meerut and Roorkee.

Getting Around

• Shared Taxis (Bolero/Sumo): The workhorse of Uttrakhand hills. Seats cost ₹150–₹400 for inter-town runs (e.g., Rishikesh to Devprayag). Fast, but heavily packed.
• Private Cabs: Available outside all major train stations. Negotiate full-day hill rates beforehand (₹3,500/day average).
• Scooter Rentals: Perfect inside Rishikesh and Dehradun. Expect ₹400–₹700 per day. Ensure you inspect brakes before heading uphill.

India’s oldest national park lies in the Nainital district. It remains one of the best places to spot wild Bengal Tigers.
