Best Places to Visit in Uttarakhand in December 2026: The Ultimate Winter Guide

Introduction

Most people think Uttarakhand shuts down once winter sets in. They picture blocked mountain passes and freezing hotel rooms. But after spending fifteen years exploring these ridges every December, I can tell you it's actually the absolute best time to go. The skies are razor-sharp, the crowds vanish, and places like Auli turn into genuine alpine wonderlands.

Whether you're chasing heavy snow or just want a quiet cup of chai overlooking the Garhwal Himalayas, December offers a completely different side of the mountains. Let's skip the generic travel brochure fluff and dive into the exact spots worth your time, how much it'll cost you, and what to watch out for.

Quick Facts About Uttarakhand in December

• Peak Snow Zones: Auli, Chopta, Munsiyari, Dhanaulti.
• Daytime Temperatures: 10°C to 18°C in lower hills; -4°C to 5°C in high altitude.
• Nighttime Temperatures: Often drops below freezing (0°C to -8°C).
• Road Conditions: National Highways are clear, but interior roads to Chopta or higher reaches can face temporary closures due to sudden snowfall.
• Peak Tourism Window: Christmas to New Year brings a surge in tourist numbers around Mussoorie and Nainital.

Best Time to Visit

December is a distinct shoulder-to-peak month. If you want pristine snow without thousands of tourists playing loud music, aim for the first two weeks of December.

By December 20th, hotel prices double, and traffic jams stretch for kilometers near Mall Roads. Plan your itinerary between December 5th and December 18th for the sweet spot of crisp weather and peaceful trails.

Weather Guide

Pro Tip: High-altitude towns like Auli and Chopta experience sub-zero temperatures as soon as the sun dips behind the peaks around 4:30 PM. Always check your hotel has functional room heaters before booking.

How to Reach Uttarakhand

Getting to the state is straightforward depending on your starting point:

• By Air: Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is your primary hub. Daily flights arrive from Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. A taxi from the airport to Rishikesh costs around ₹1,000, and to Mussoorie about ₹2,500.
• By Train: Dehradun Railway Station and Haridwar Junction are well-connected to major Indian cities. The overnight Mussoorie Express from Old Delhi is a classic budget option.
• By Road: Overnight Volvo buses operated by UTC and private operators run daily from Delhi's Kashmere Gate ISBT to Dehradun, Haldwani, and Rishikesh. Fares range from ₹650 to ₹1,400.

Getting Around

Public transport works well between major hubs like Dehradun, Rishikesh, Haridwar, and Haldwani via state buses and shared jeeps (Vikrams). However, if you plan to visit Auli, Chopta, or interior Kumaon, hiring a private cab is essential.

Expect to pay around ₹3,000 to ₹4,000 per day for a cab (like a Dzire or Ertiga) for outstation travel. Shared jeeps from Joshimath to Auli cost about ₹100 per seat if you don't want to take the ropeway.

Top Things to Do

1. Skiing in Auli

Even if you've never touched a pair of skis, Auli's slopes in December are beginner-friendly. The Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) runs ski courses, and gear rental costs roughly ₹500 to ₹1,000 per day.

2. Sunrise Trek at Tungnath (Chopta)

Make the 3.5 km trek from Chopta to Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple in the world. In December, the trail is often blanketed in white powder. Start by 6:00 AM to catch the golden hour hitting the Chaukhamba peaks.

3. Stargazing in Mukteshwar

Because of minimal light pollution and crisp winter air, Mukteshwar offers incredible night skies. Pack a DSLR and a tripod for astrophotography.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Skip crowded Mussoorie and head to Kanatal or Sari Village. Sari is the base camp for Deoria Tal, a stunning high-altitude lake that reflects Mt. Chaukhamba like a mirror. In December, you can camp overnight near the lake (tents cost around ₹1,500 including meals) and watch the frost form on the grass at dawn.

Another hidden gem is Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary in Kumaon. Zero traffic allowed inside the core zone, and the Zero Point view gives you a 300-degree panorama of snow-capped Himalayan giants like Nanda Devi and Trishul.

Accommodation Guide

Uttarakhand has everything from backpacker hostels to luxury mountain lodges. Here are my tried-and-tested recommendations:

• Budget: Zostel Rishikesh or local homestays in Sari village (₹800–₹1,500 per night).
• Mid-Range: Sterling Mussoorie or GMVN tourist rest houses in Auli (₹3,000–₹6,000 per night).
• Luxury: The Roseate Ganges (Rishikesh) or Amayaa Resort (Mukteshwar) (₹12,000–₹25,000+ per night).

Where to Eat

Mountain food in December is all about staying warm. Don't leave without trying:

• Chainsoo: A protein-packed black gram dal cooked with roasted spices.
• Kafuli: A thick spinach and fenugreek leaf curry served with steamed rice.
• Bal Mithai: A roasted khoya sweet coated in white sugar balls, best bought from Lal Bazaar in Almora.

Recommended spots: Kalsang Friends Corner in Dehradun for Tibetan momos and thukpa, and Chhotu Restaurant in Joshimath for piping-hot parathas before heading up to Auli.

Budget Breakdown

Here is what a realistic 5-day trip for two people to Auli and Chopta looks like in December 2026:

Packing Checklist

Winter in Uttarakhand requires layering rather than just one heavy jacket. Make sure your bag has:

• Thermal innerwear (at least 2 pairs).
• Waterproof trekking boots with good grip.
• Heavy fleece jacket and a windproof/waterproof outer shell.
• Woolen caps, gloves (water-resistant for snow), and woolen socks.
• Lip balm, heavy moisturizer, and SPF 30+ sunscreen (snow glare is brutal).
• Power bank (batteries drain fast in sub-zero temperatures).

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Assuming standard sedan cars can drive on snow-covered roads in Auli or Chopta without snow chains. Always rent a 4x4 or hire local drivers who know how to handle black ice.

• Stay Hydrated: People often forget to drink water in cold weather because they don't feel thirsty, leading to altitude headaches.
• Keep Cash Handy: ATMs in remote places like Chopta or Sari frequently run out of cash or lose network connectivity.

Nearby Attractions

If you have extra days, combine your trip with:

• Rishikesh: For riverside cafes and the evening Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat.
• Haridwar: For a spiritual immersion before heading up into the hills.
• Jim Corbett National Park: Just 4 hours from Nainital for winter jeep safaris.
