Best Places to Visit in Uttarakhand in December for Snowfall: A Field-Tested Winter Guide

Introduction

If you want white slopes, crisp mountain air, and heavy snow showers in December, Uttarakhand delivers. But here is the truth most travel sites will not tell you: December snowfall does not happen everywhere at once.

Early December usually brings dry frost and sub-zero nights. Fresh, powdery snow generally arrives after December 15th across altitudes above 2,500 meters. If you book a hotel in Mussoorie or Nainital on December 5th expecting knee-deep snow, you will likely end up disappointed with cold concrete streets and dry winds.

I have spent over a decade tracking Himalayan weather patterns and driving through winter passes in Garhwal and Kumaon. This guide breaks down exactly where to go, what it costs in Indian Rupees, and how to avoid getting stuck in black ice or tourist traps.

Quick Facts About Uttarakhand Snowfall in December

• Highest Snow Probability Zone: Altitudes above 2,700 meters (Auli, Chopta, Munsiyari, Kharsali).
• Average Temperature: -5°C to 12°C depending on altitude and elevation.
• First Snow Window: Mid-December (typically between Dec 12 and Dec 22).
• Peak Snow Window: Christmas week through early January.
• Nearest Major Hubs: Dehradun (Airport), Haridwar / Rishikesh (Rail), Kathgodam (Rail for Kumaon).

Pro Tip: Track Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Uttarakhand updates for Dehradun, Chamoli, and Pithoragarh 72 hours before driving uphill.

Best Time to Visit

Timing makes or breaks a snow trip in Uttarakhand.

If you travel between December 1 and December 12, you will enjoy clear views of snow-capped peaks like Nanda Devi and Trishul, low hotel rates, and empty roads. However, actual falling snow at lower elevations is rare during this window.

For fresh snowfall, aim for December 18 to December 31. Western Disturbances active over Northern India bring heavy precipitation during late December. Expect higher hotel tariffs and traffic around Christmas and New Year, but this is your best shot at live snowfall.

Weather Guide (Month-by-Month Table)

Here is how winter unfolds in high-altitude Uttarakhand across the cold season:

How to Reach Uttarakhand Snow Spots

Getting to mountain snow zones requires a mix of trains, flights, and mountain road transport.

By Air

Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun (DED) is the primary gateway for Garhwal destinations (Auli, Chopta, Dhanaulti, Harsil). Pantnagar Airport (PGH) serves Kumaon destinations (Munsiyari, Mukteshwar), though daily flights are limited.

By Train

• For Garhwal Region: Take the Dehradun Shatabdi or Jan Shatabdi to Haridwar (HW) or Rishikesh (YNRK).
• For Kumaon Region: Take the Ranikhet Express or Kathgodam Shatabdi to Kathgodam (KGM).

By Road

From Delhi, Volvo buses run regularly to Rishikesh, Dehradun, and Haldwani. From these transit hubs, you can hire private taxis or board shared Sumo/Maxx vehicles to climb into the snow belts.

Getting Around

Mountain roads in December require careful planning. Black ice forms on north-facing road bends between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM, especially on the Joshimath-Auli stretch and the road to Chopta.

• Shared Jeeps (Tata Sumo / Mahindra Maxx): Economical and driven by locals who know winter roads. Expect to pay ₹300–₹600 per seat for inter-district mountain routes.
• Private Taxis (Dzire / Innova): A private Dzire costs ₹3,500–₹4,500 per day including driver charges. Innovas range from ₹5,500–₹7,000 per day.
• Self-Drive Cars: Not recommended unless you have extensive experience handling front-wheel/four-wheel drive on ice. Rear-wheel drive cars like Innovas can slip easily on icy slopes near Auli.

Top Places to Visit in Uttarakhand in December for Snowfall

1. Auli (Chamoli District)

Auli is India's premier ski destination for good reason. Sitting at 2,800 meters, it offers sweeping 180-degree views of Nanda Devi, Mana Parvat, and Kamet.

By mid-December, GMVN runs its artificial snow guns if natural precipitation is delayed, but natural snowfall usually hits the upper meadows by December 20th.

• Key Activity: Ride the 4 km cable car from Joshimath to Auli (₹1,000 round trip) or take the open chairlift (₹500).
• Distance from Rishikesh: 268 km (~9 hours drive).
• Where to Stay: GMVN Ski Resort (₹3,500–₹6,000/night) or Cliff Top Club.

2. Chopta (Rudraprayag District)

Known as the starting point for the Tungnath and Chandrashila treks, Chopta turns into a white wilderness by late December. At 2,680 meters, it receives heavy snowfall early in the winter cycle.

Keep in mind that Chopta loses grid electricity during heavy snowstorms. Homestays rely on solar lighting and wood fires (bukhari).

• Key Activity: Trek 3.5 km through snow-draped pine forests to Tungnath Temple (highest Shiva temple in the world).
• Distance from Rishikesh: 200 km (~7 hours drive).
• Where to Stay: Eco-camps in Baniyakund or local homestays in Makku Math (₹1,200–₹2,500/night).

3. Munsiyari (Pithoragarh District)

If you want to avoid tourist crowds and gaze at the five towering peaks of Panchachuli, drive to Munsiyari in Kumaon. Located at 2,200 meters, this remote town receives reliable snow in late December.

• Key Activity: Walk to Khaliya Top for panoramic high-altitude views.
• Distance from Kathgodam: 275 km (~10 hours drive over Birthi Falls pass).
• Where to Stay: Pandey Lodge or KMVN Tourist Rest House (₹1,500–₹3,200/night).

4. Dhanaulti & Kanatal (Tehri Garhwal)

Located just 24 km past Mussoorie, Dhanaulti sits at 2,200 meters. While Mussoorie gets rare snow that melts quickly, Dhanaulti's eco-parks retain thick snow blankets after December 22nd.

• Key Activity: Explore Amber and Dhara Eco Parks under tall, snow-dusted Deodar trees (Entry ₹50).
• Distance from Dehradun: 60 km (~2.5 hours drive).
• Where to Stay: Camp Awara or localized eco-resorts (₹2,000–₹4,500/night).

5. Harsil Valley (Uttarkashi District)

En route to Gangotri, Harsil Valley stays mostly quiet during winter. Surrounded by apple orchards and wooden traditional houses, it receives early winter snow because of cold river breezes off the Bhagirathi River.

• Key Activity: Walk across the suspension bridge to Bagori ethnic Tibetan-Garhwali village.
• Distance from Rishikesh: 215 km (~8 hours drive).
• Where to Stay: Nelangana Resort or local wooden homestays (₹1,800–₹3,500/night).

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path Snow Villages

If popular spots feel too commercialized, head to these lesser-known snow destinations:

• Sankri Village (Uttarkashi): The gateway to the famous Kedarkantha Trek. In late December, the village itself gets covered in 6 to 12 inches of snow. Stay at Zostel Sankri or local mountain homes.
• Kharsali (Yamunotri Winter Seat): A quiet, heritage wooden village near Barkot that sees heavy winter snowfall with almost zero commercial tourism.
• Mandal Valley (Chamoli): Tucked below Chopta, offering peaceful homestays, snowy trails to Anusuya Devi, and rich birdwatching.

Pro Tip: When visiting remote villages in winter, carry enough cash in INR. ATMs in places like Sankri, Chopta, and Harsil often go offline due to frozen network towers.

Accommodation Guide

Winter stays in Uttarakhand range from government-run lodges to authentic family-run homestays:

• GMVN & KMVN Tourist Rest Houses: These state-run properties sit on prime real estate in Auli, Munsiyari, and Dhanaulti. They offer heavy wool blankets, room heaters (charged extra around ₹300-₹500/day), and hot water geysers.
• Mountain Homestays: Best for authentic food and local culture. Prices include home-cooked winter meals and wood fires.
• High-End Resorts: Properties like The Machan (Jungle Resort near Bhimtal) or Auli Wooden Huts offer luxury amenities, but book months ahead for December dates.

Where to Eat (Garhwali & Kumaoni Winter Food)

Cold mountain weather calls for nutrient-dense local dishes cooked with local millets, lentils, and ghee. Skip standard urban menus and look for dhabas serving these regional specialties:

• Kafuli: A thick green curry made from spinach and fenugreek leaves, cooked in iron pots over slow wood fires.
• Aloo ke Gutke: Boiled mountain potatoes spiced with Jakhya (wild mustard seeds). Pair it with hot fried Puri and red chili chutney.
• Phaanu & Dubuk: Wholesome lentil stews made from Gahat (Horsegram) or Bhatt (Black Soybean). Perfect for keeping body heat up.
• Bhang ki Chutney: A tangy condiment made from roasted hemp seeds, lemon juice, and green chilies.

Top Local Food Stops:

• Chotiwala Restaurant (Rishikesh) for traditional thalis before heading up.
• Local Dhabas at Joshimath Market for hot Gahat soup and fresh Parathas.
• KMVN Canteens across Garhwal for simple, reliable Garhwali thalis (₹150–₹250).

Essential Winter Packing Checklist

Do not underestimate high-altitude cold in December. Nights drop well below freezing.

• Clothing: High-grade thermal innerwear (2 sets), fleece mid-layer, windproof water-resistant down jacket (-10°C rated).
• Footwear: Waterproof trekking shoes with good rubber lug soles. Avoid smooth sneakers or canvas shoes.
• Accessories: Woolen cap (beanie) covering ears, waterproof ski gloves, neck gaiter/buff, UV-protection sunglasses (snow blindness is real).
• Gear & Gear Essentials: Microspikes/crampons (if trekking Chandrashila or Khaliya Top), 20,000 mAh power bank (phone batteries drain rapidly in freezing temps), insulated water flask.
• Medical Kit: Diamox (for altitude), Moov/Volini spray, cold/fever medication, lip balm, and heavy moisturizer.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake 1: Driving after dark on high passes.
Black ice turns transparent on cold roads after sunset. Plan your drive so you reach your destination by 4:00 PM latest.

Common Mistake 2: Relying purely on Google Maps.
Google Maps often routes drivers through abandoned or unpaved high-altitude passes that close down during snowstorms (like the road from Rohru to Sankri or short-cuts to Chopta). Always check route status with local taxi stands at Rishikesh or Kathgodam.

Common Mistake 3: Fueling up late.
Diesel thickens and freezes in fuel lines at sub-zero temperatures overnight. If parking outdoors in Chopta or Auli, park facing the morning sun and keep your fuel tank full to prevent moisture condensation.

Nearby Attractions to Add to Your Itinerary

If high-altitude roads get blocked by heavy snowstorms, keep these reliable lower-altitude stops as backup options:

• Rishikesh: Perfect for river rafting, cafe hopping, and attending the Evening Ganga Aarti at Parmarth Niketan.
• Tehri Lake: Enjoy water sports and jet skiing on an emerald reservoir surrounded by cool hills.
• Lansdowne: A quiet cantonment town with pine forests that stays easily accessible even in heavy winter.
