Best Places to Visit in Uttarakhand in May and June: The Ultimate Summer Escape Guide

Introduction

When Delhi, Jaipur, and Chandigarh cross 43°C in May, the pine forest paths of Garhwal and Kumaon drop down to a refreshing 18°C. Summer in Uttarakhand isn't just a holiday choice; it's a seasonal rescue plan for millions across northern India.

May and June represent the absolute peak season across the state. Clear skies frame snow-capped Himalayan peaks, high-altitude passes open after winter snow clearings, and alpine meadows turn emerald green. However, picking the wrong destination during these months can land you in a 4-hour traffic gridlock outside Mussoorie or leave you hunting for overpriced homestays in Nainital.

Having navigated these mountain passes across multiple summer seasons, I wrote this practical guide to help you choose the right destinations, avoid seasonal bottlenecks, and plan a realistic budget for your trip in May and June 2026.

Quick Facts About Uttarakhand in Summer

• Average Temperature Range: 12°C to 25°C in hill stations; 28°C to 36°C in foothills (Dehradun/Rishikesh).
• Peak Tourist Window: May 15 to June 20 (coincides with school summer breaks across India).
• Major Pilgrim Event: Char Dham Yatra (Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath) opens late April/early May, bringing high traffic to Rishikesh, Srinagar, and Rudraprayag corridors.
• Monsoon Onset: Pre-monsoon showers typically start around June 20–25, transitioning into heavy rains by July.
• Best Circuit for Solitude: Kumaon High Altitude Circuit (Munsiyari, Peora, Binsar).

Best Time to Visit: May vs June

Both months offer unique advantages depending on what you want from your trip.

May: Clear Views & Peak Energy

May brings stable dry weather with low humidity. Snow remains visible on high mountain passes like Kunzum or Rohtang, and clear mornings give you sharp views of peaks like Nanda Devi and Trishul. The trade-off? High accommodation rates and heavy weekend traffic near tourist towns.

June: Warmer Days & Blooming Meadows

Early June stays warm and dry, making higher altitudes (above 2,500 meters) comfortable even at night. By mid-to-late June, pre-monsoon clouds drift in, dropping temperatures by 3-5°C and turning alpine meadows lush green. High-altitude treks like Valley of Flowers open in June.

Pro Tip: If you want to avoid peak crowds, plan your trip between June 5 and June 20. The initial summer rush dips slightly before pre-monsoon rains arrive.

Weather Guide (Month-by-Month)

How to Reach Uttarakhand

• Pantnagar Airport (PGH): Serves Kumaon region (Nainital, Bhimtal, Ranikhet, Almora). Limited direct flights from Delhi.

By Train

• To Garhwal: Dehradun (DDN) and Haridwar (HW) are main railheads. The Vande Bharat Express from New Delhi to Dehradun takes under 5 hours.
• To Kumaon: Kathgodam (KGM) is the terminal rail station. The Kathgodam Shatabdi Express from New Delhi is reliable and fast.

By Road

• Delhi to Mussoorie: ~290 km via Delhi-Dehradun Expressway / NH 707A (6-7 hours).
• Delhi to Nainital: ~315 km via NH 9 (7-8 hours).
• Delhi to Rishikesh: ~240 km via Meerut Expressway / NH 34 (4.5-5.5 hours).

Getting Around

• Shared Taxis (Tata Sumos / Boleros): Best for budget mountain travel between district hubs (e.g., Rudraprayag to Chopta, Kathgodam to Almora). Fares run ₹100–₹300 per leg.
• Private Cabs: Sedan cabs cost ₹3,000–₹4,200 per day; SUVs (Innova/Ertiga) cost ₹5,000–₹7,000 per day including driver charges.
• Scooter Rentals: Available in Rishikesh, Dehradun, and Haldwani for ₹400–₹700 per day. Ideal for short local trips, but avoid driving scooters up steep, high-altitude highway passes.

Top Places to Visit & Things to Do

1. Chopta & Tungnath: The Mini Switzerland of Garhwal

Chopta sits at an altitude of 2,680 meters inside Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. In May and June, snow melts away to reveal green bugyals (meadows) surrounded by deodar forests.

• Key Attraction: Trek 3.5 km from Chopta to Tungnath (the highest Shiva temple in the world at 3,680 m). Extend another 1.5 km to Chandrashila Peak for 360-degree views of Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, and Kedar peaks.
• Ideal Duration: 2–3 Days.
• Distance: 210 km from Rishikesh (approx. 7 hours drive).

Pro Tip: Start your Tungnath trek by 5:30 AM. You will beat both the midday heat and the trail crowds that start arriving after 9:00 AM.

2. Landour & Mussoorie: Colonial Charm & Quiet Woods

While Mussoorie's Mall Road gets crowded in June, the quiet hamlet of Landour (located 5 km further uphill at 2,250 meters) offers pine-scented walks and old-world architecture.

• Top Things to Do: Walk the Upper Jabarkhet Nature Reserve loop, grab pancakes at Char Dukan, and visit the historic Prakash Bros store for homemade peanut butter and plum jams.
• Where to Stay: Rokeby Manor or small homestays in Sister's Bazaar.

3. Auli: Cable Cars & Himalayan Panoramas

Famous as a ski destination in winter, Auli transforms into a high-altitude green meadow during May and June. Temperatures stay around 15°C, making it pleasant for walking around the artificial lake or taking short day-treks to Gorson Bugyal.

• Highlight: The 4 km ropeway ride from Joshimath to Auli (₹1,000 round trip) offers aerial views of the Alaknanda valley and Nanda Devi Peak.

4. Nainital & Pangot: Lakes & Birdwatching

Nainital remains Kumaon's flagship summer hill station. For a quieter trip, stay in Pangot—a village located 15 km away inside Kilbury Bird Sanctuary, home to over 250 bird species.

• Top Things to Do: Rent a wooden rowboat on Naini Lake early morning (8:00 AM), drive up to Snow View Point, and eat traditional mutton curry at Chandani Chowk restaurant on Mall Road.

5. Rishikesh: White Water Rafting Before Pre-Monsoon Shutdown

May is the last full month for river rafting on the Ganges before operations close for the monsoon season in late June.

• Highlight: The 16 km Shivpuri to Laxman Jhula rafting stretch offers Class III+ rapids like 'Golf Course' and 'Roller Coaster'. Water temperatures are refreshingly cool.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

If you want to skip crowded tourist spots during peak summer, head to these lesser-known destinations:

1. Munsiyari (Pithoragarh District)

Located at the base of the Panchachuli peaks in Kumaon, Munsiyari sits at 2,200 meters. It offers unobstructed views of five snow peaks right from your homestay balcony. Take a short 3 km hike to Khaliya Top for sweeping views.

2. Peora (Almora District)

Situated between Nainital and Almora, Peora is a small hamlet surrounded by plum, apple, and apricot orchards. In May and June, trees branch out with fresh summer fruit. Perfect for slow travel, reading, and forest walks.

3. Kanatal & Dhanaulti Hinterlands

Located 40 km from Mussoorie on the Chamba road, Kanatal offers dense pine forests without Mussoorie's vehicle gridlock. Visit Kaudia Forest for quiet nature trails and camping under clear night skies.

Packing Checklist

• Layered Clothing: Light cotton T-shirts for daytime hikes; windproof light jackets or fleece for evenings above 2,000m.
• Footwear: Sturdy hiking shoes with rubber grip soles (essential for Tungnath or Khaliya Top trails) and comfortable walking sneakers.
• Sun Protection: High SPF 50 sunscreen, broad-brimmed hat, UV sunglasses. The high-altitude sun burns quickly.
• Hydration: Reusable stainless-steel water bottle and ORS / Electrolyte packets.
• Cash: Essential for rural areas. Carry at least ₹5,000–₹8,000 in physical cash as ATMs in places like Chopta, Munsiyari, and Landour frequently run out of money.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake 1: Driving to Mussoorie or Nainital on Weekend Mornings Without Pre-Booked Hotel Parking.
Traffic police frequently stop incoming unreserved cars at Kathgodam (for Nainital) and Kuthal Gate (for Mussoorie) when hill parking reaches full capacity. Always keep your accommodation booking voucher saved offline on your phone.

Common Mistake 2: Underestimating Mountain Driving Distances.
A 100 km mountain drive in Garhwal takes 3.5 to 4.5 hours. Do not plan daily drives over 150 km, or you will spend your entire vacation behind a windshield.

Common Mistake 3: Skipping Char Dham Registration.
If your trip itinerary passes through Rishikesh, Devprayag, or Rudraprayag during May or June, ensure you carry your official Uttarakhand Char Dham Yatra e-pass (if visiting shrines) or expect delays due to security checkpoints.

Pro Tip for Altitude Sickness: Chopta sits at 2,680 meters and Tungnath reaches nearly 3,700 meters. Take it easy on day one—avoid alcohol, drink plenty of water, and do not rush up steep trail steps.

Nearby Attractions

• Jim Corbett National Park (Ramnagar): The Dhikala and Bijrani zones stay open until June 15 before closing for monsoon. Early summer is prime tiger-sighting time near waterholes.
• Tehri Lake: Located 2.5 hours from Rishikesh, Tehri Lake offers jet skiing, banana rides, and hot-air ballooning over water.
• Rajaji National Park: Located near Haridwar, this park offers morning jungle safaris with high wild elephant sighting rates in May.
