What Are the Best Places to Visit in Uttarakhand with Family?

Introduction

Traveling with family means balancing everyone's needs. Grandparents want comfortable transport and easy walks. Kids want fun activities and open spaces. Adults want stress-free logistics, good food, and scenic views. Uttarakhand hits all those notes if you plan your itinerary right.

From the calm lakes of Nainital to the quiet oak forests of Kanatal, this Himalayan state offers varied experiences. However, choosing the wrong town or booking a hard-to-reach resort can quickly turn a relaxing holiday into an exhausting ordeal.

In this guide, I share my battle-tested advice from leading dozens of trips across North India. You will find exact costs in Indian Rupees (INR), specific hotel picks, road conditions, and practical safety tips so every family member stays happy.

Quick Facts About Uttarakhand Family Trips

• Primary Gateway Airports: Dehradun (Jolly Grant Airport - DED) & Pantnagar (PGH)
• Major Railheads: Kathgodam (for Kumaon region) & Dehradun / Haridwar (for Garhwal region)
• Ideal Trip Duration: 6 to 9 days for a relaxed family trip
• Best Travel Season: March to June (summer escape) and October to February (snow & mountain views)
• Monsoon Warning: Avoid July and August due to frequent landslips and road blockages
• Average Daily Budget: ₹4,500 – ₹12,000 per family of 4 (including car, hotel, and meals)

Best Time to Visit

Choosing when to visit depends on what your family wants to experience:

• March to June (Summer): Daytime temperatures stay between 15°C and 25°C in hill stations. Perfect for escaping northern plains heat, boat rides, and gentle nature walks. Expect heavy tourist crowds in Mall Road areas.
• July to August (Monsoon): Rain hits hard across Garhwal and Kumaon. Landslides frequently block major highways like NH58 and NH109. Skip this season if traveling with young kids or elderly parents.
• September to November (Autumn): Sharp mountain views, pleasant afternoon sun, and clear blue skies. Crowds thin out significantly after mid-October, making this my favorite time for family holidays.
• December to February (Winter): Cold weather with temperatures dropping below freezing at night in high altitude towns like Auli, Chopta, and Dhanaulti. Ideal if your family wants to see snow.

How to Reach Uttarakhand

By Air

• Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun): Connects Garhwal destinations like Mussoorie (60 km), Rishikesh (21 km), and Haridwar (38 km). Direct flights run daily from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Jaipur.
• Pantnagar Airport: Serves Kumaon towns like Nainital (70 km), Bhimtal (58 km), and Ranikhet (115 km). Flight options are limited, so check schedules early.

By Train

• Kathgodam Railway Station: Top gateway for Kumaon. The Kathgodam Shatabdi Express and Ranikhet Express from Delhi offer clean, comfortable family travel.
• Dehradun & Haridwar Stations: Ideal for reaching Garhwal hill stations. The Vande Bharat Express from New Delhi to Dehradun takes under 5 hours.

By Road

• Highway networks from New Delhi (via NH44 and NH34) have improved greatly. You can reach Dehradun or Haridwar in 4 to 5 hours, and Nainital in 6 to 7 hours by personal vehicle or private taxi.

Pro Tip: If traveling with family members prone to motion sickness, avoid long sleeper buses on winding hill roads. Rent a private SUV where the driver can stop whenever necessary.

Getting Around

Public buses run regularly between cities, but they are rarely comfortable for family groups carrying luggage.

• Private Taxi Hire: Renting a commercial sedan (Swift Dzire) costs ₹3,000–₹3,800 per day. An SUV (Innova Crysta or Ertiga) ranges from ₹4,500 to ₹6,500 per day including driver allowance, toll, and state vehicle taxes.
• Self-Drive Cars: Not recommended on high-mountain passes unless you have extensive experience negotiating steep hairpin bends and single-lane hill roads.
• Local Auto-Rickshaws & E-Rickshaws: Available in flat valley areas like Rishikesh, Haridwar, and Dehradun. Expect to pay ₹50 to ₹150 for short town runs.

Top Things to Do

1. Nainital & Bhimtal Lake Circuit

Nainital remains a top choice for family trips for good reason. Naini Lake offers easy rowboat and pedal-boat rides (₹250–₹350 per boat for 30 minutes). Take the Nainital Aerial Ropeway (₹360 per person) up to Snow View Point for striking Himalayan panoramas.

For a quieter stay, head 22 km down to Bhimtal or Sattal. Sattal is excellent for family birdwatching walks, kayak sessions, and lakeside picnics away from crowd noise.

• Best Spot for Kids: Eco Cave Gardens in Mallital (Entry: ₹60 per adult, ₹30 per child). Kids love crawling through interconnected natural rocky caves.
• Senior-Friendly Activity: Flat walk along the pedestrianized Mall Road in the evening.

2. Mussoorie & Landour

Located 34 km above Dehradun, Mussoorie delivers easy hill station charm. Visit Company Garden (₹25 entry) which features flower gardens, a small artificial waterfall, and an amusement park ride section for young kids.

Drive up 5 km to Landour for a quieter experience. Walk along the shade-covered Upper Mall Road, stop at Char Dukan for hot ginger tea and cinnamon waffles, and visit Rokeby Manor.

• Must-Do: Ride the Gun Hill Cable Car (₹200 per person round trip) for open valley views.

3. Jim Corbett National Park Wildlife Safari

Jim Corbett is India's oldest national park and ideal for an active family safari. Book your jeep safaris through the official Uttarakhand Forest Department portal at least 45 days in advance.

• Recommended Safari Zones: Dhikala (famous for grasslands, requires stay inside forest resthouse) and Bijrani (great tiger sighting record during dry months).
• Safari Cost: ₹4,500 to ₹6,500 per jeep (up to 6 passengers plus guide and driver).
• Kid Appeal: Spotting wild elephants, spotted deer, gharials, and birds along the Ramganga River.

4. Rishikesh River & Temple Trails

For families with teenagers or elderly parents, Rishikesh combines gentle spirituality with light outdoor adventure.

• Evening Ganga Aarti: Visit Triveni Ghat at sunset. Book a seated area early so elderly family members do not have to stand in crowded lanes.
• Family-Friendly Rafting: Skip the rough marine drive stretches if traveling with young kids. Opt for the gentle 9 km Brahmapuri to Nim Beach stretch (Grade I & II rapids, suitable for kids aged 10+ with life jackets).

5. Auli Cable Car & Snow Slopes

Auli is a high-altitude ski destination accessible via a 4.4 km ropeway ride from Joshimath (₹1,000 per head round trip). The trip offers views of Nanda Devi peak (7,816 m).

In winter (Jan-Feb), families can try basic skiing lessons or ride sledges over soft snow. In summer, the artificial lake reflects the mountains, making it a comfortable spot for family photos.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

If you want to skip high-density tourist centers, consider these quieter alternatives:

Kanatal & Dhanaulti

Situated between Mussoorie and Chamba, Kanatal sits at 2,590 meters. It offers quiet pine forest trails and clear mountain views without the commercial noise of Mussoorie. Visit Eco Park in Dhanaulti (₹50 entry), which features easy walking tracks suitable for senior travelers.

Mukteshwar

Located 50 km from Nainital, Mukteshwar is famous for fruit orchards (apples, plums, peaches) and peaceful homestays. Stop at Chauli Ki Jali for valley views and visit the 350-year-old Mukteshwar Dham temple.

Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary

Binsar offers oak forest views and quiet walks. Vehicles pay a sanctuary entrance fee (₹150 per person, ₹250 per car). Hike up the flat 2 km trail to Zero Point for a 300-km panoramic view of Himalayan peaks including Kedarnath, Trishul, and Shivling.

Budget Breakdown

Here is an estimated budget for a family of 4 (2 adults + 2 children) traveling for a 6-day trip in Uttarakhand:

Packing Checklist

Essentials for Kids

• Motion sickness medication (consult your pediatrician before travel)
• Warm layers and windcheaters (temperatures drop fast after sunset)
• Refillable water bottles and dry snacks (dry fruits, energy bars) for long hill drives
• Sturdy walking shoes with rubber grip

Essentials for Seniors

• Walking sticks with rubber tips
• Daily prescription drugs (carry 3 extra days' supply)
• Thermal innerwear (even during summer evenings in higher towns)
• Comfortable slip-on walking shoes

General Family Gear

• Compact umbrellas and lightweight rainponchos
• Sunscreen (SPF 50+) and lip balm (mountain sun causes quick skin burn)
• Multi-plug adapter and portable power banks
• Basic first-aid kit with pain relief spray, bandages, and ORS packets

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake 1: Driving on Mountain Roads After Dark
Hill roads in Uttarakhand lack street lighting outside main towns. Dense fog rolls in quickly after 6:00 PM in places like Mussoorie, Binsar, and Dhanaulti. Wrap up road travel by 5:00 PM daily.

Common Mistake 2: Booking Hotels Without Parking
Towns like Nainital and Mussoorie have severe parking shortages during peak summer. Unloading luggage on steep inclines without reserved hotel parking causes major stress. Always verify private parking on site before paying booking deposits.

Common Mistake 3: Overpacking the Daily Itinerary
Mountain travel time takes twice as long as flat highway travel. Covering 50 km on hill roads takes nearly 2 hours. Limit your itinerary to 2 main attractions per day so children and elderly family members do not get exhausted.

Common Mistake 4: Unofficial Jungle Safari Bookings
Avoid booking Jim Corbett jeep safaris through random agents at local taxi stands. Use only the official Uttarakhand Forest Department portal to avoid scams.

Nearby Attractions

If you have extra days on your itinerary, consider these easy side trips:

• Haridwar (30 km from Rishikesh): Visit Har Ki Pauri for the evening Ganga Aarti and ride the Mansa Devi Temple cable car.
• Ranikhet (55 km from Nainital): Visit the Chaubatia Apple Gardens and the peaceful Kumaon Regimental Centre Museum.
• Kausani (115 km from Nainital): Renowned for panoramic views of the 300 km Himalayan range and historic tea estates.
• Chopta (200 km from Rishikesh): Gateway to Tungnath. Beautiful rolling meadows (bugyals) suitable for family day treks during spring.
