Best Places to Visit Near Nainital for a Scenic Uttarakhand Trip

Introduction

Nainital is famous for its emerald lake, but peak summer traffic on Mall Road can ruin the peaceful mountain trip you planned. Parking fees hit ₹500 per day, cab drivers charge surge prices, and rowdy weekend crowds crowd out the peaceful views.

The real beauty of the Kumaon region lies just beyond Nainital's municipal limits. Drive 30 to 90 minutes in almost any direction, and you'll find pine-scented mountain ridges, quiet lakes without honking horns, and clear views of Nanda Devi.

We spent weeks driving across these Kumaon backroads to compile this guide. Here are the absolute best places to visit near Nainital, along with actual costs, direct taxi routes, and local food spots you won't find in typical brochures.

Best Time to Visit

Timing your trip determines whether you see clear Himalayan peaks or thick fog.

• March to June (Spring/Summer): Temperatures stay between 15°C and 27°C. Perfect for kayaking in Sattal, birdwatching in Pangot, and avoiding the heat of North Indian plains.
• July to September (Monsoon): Heavy rainfall triggers landslides on the Bhowali-Nainital road. However, orchards in Mukteshwar and Ramgarh turn lush green, and room rates drop by 50%.
• October to November (Autumn): Crisp air, clear blue skies, and optimal conditions for snow-cap viewing. Day temperatures hover around 18°C.
• December to February (Winter): Cold days (5°C to 12°C) and freezing nights (-2°C). Mukteshwar and Pangot see brief snow spells in January.

Pro Tip: Visit between October 15 and November 20. Clear skies guarantee direct views of the Trishul and Nanda Devi peaks without the summer tourist crush.

How to Reach Places Near Nainital

By Train

Take the Kathgodam Shatabdi Express (12040) from New Delhi or the Ranikhet Express (15013). From Kathgodam station, pre-booked taxis cost around ₹1,200 to Bhimtal, ₹1,500 to Nainital, and ₹2,200 to Mukteshwar. Shared jeeps operate from Kathgodam bus stand to Bhowali for ₹100 per seat.

By Road

Drive via NH9 from Delhi through Hapur, Moradabad, Rampur, and Haldwani. Total distance to Bhimtal is roughly 300 km (7-8 hours). Avoid entering Haldwani town during peak afternoon hours; use the bypass route through Chorgallia if coming from Bareilly.

By Air

Pantnagar Airport connects with daily flights from Delhi and Dehradun. Taxi charges from Pantnagar to Bhimtal or Mukteshwar range from ₹2,500 to ₹3,500.

Getting Around

Public transportation between smaller villages near Nainital is limited. Shared Sumos run on set routes (e.g., Bhowali to Mukteshwar or Nainital to Pangot) until 5:00 PM, charging ₹50–₹120 per seat.

For flexibility, rent a scooty in Kathgodam or Nainital for ₹600–₹800 per day. If traveling with family, hire a local cab driver who knows how to navigate tight mountain bends and switchbacks safely.

Pro Tip: Refuel your vehicle in Haldwani, Kathgodam, or Bhowali. Fuel stations in remote areas like Pangot or Ramgarh often run out of petrol during long weekends.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake 1: Staying strictly on Mall Road, Nainital
Traffic jams near the lake can cost you 2 hours every evening. Book your stay in Bhimtal, Pangot, or Ramgarh instead, and visit Nainital for a quick morning tour.

Common Mistake 2: Driving after sunset
Thick fog often settles over mountain roads between Bhowali and Mukteshwar after 6:00 PM. Avoid driving on unlit mountain roads late at night.

Common Mistake 3: Underestimating motion sickness
The road from Kathgodam to Bhowali contains over 100 tight hairpin turns. Take a preventive motion sickness tablet 30 minutes before starting your hill climb.

Common Mistake 4: Relying completely on digital payments
Network coverage drops in forest patches near Sattal and Pangot. Always carry at least ₹3,000 to ₹5,000 in physical cash for food and parking fees.
