Introduction
I’ve spent the last six months taking Zoom calls with a 7,000-meter peak staring right back at me. Let me tell you, answering emails while watching the sun hit the Trishul massif beats staring at your apartment wall any day. Uttarakhand has quietly transformed into India’s remote work capital, offering high-speed fiber optics tucked right inside pine forests.
Finding a spot with actual power backup and decent Wi-Fi is harder than it looks, though. We’ve tested dozens of homestays, colivings, and cafes across the Garhwal and Kumaon regions. Here's your definitive guide to working remotely from the mountains without losing your sanity or missing a deadline.
Quick Facts About Uttarakhand Workation
- Primary Regions: Garhwal (Dehradun, Rishikesh, Mussoorie, Chopta) and Kumaon (Nainital, Mukteshwar, Almora, Ranikhet).
- Average Internet Speed: 40 Mbps to 150 Mbps in established properties.
- Peak Workation Season: March to June and September to November.
- Major Hubs: Mukteshwar, Landour, Kasar Devi, and Bir-adjacent areas like Dehradun's outskirts.
Best Time to Visit
If you want clear skies and crisp mountain views, aim for autumn (October to November). The monsoon months (July to August) bring dramatic valley clouds and lush greenery, but landslides can disrupt your travel plans and internet connectivity.
Spring (March to May) brings blooming rhododendrons and pleasant daytime temperatures, making it ideal for outdoor evening strolls after you log off. Winters (December to February) bring snow, which is magical if you love heaters and hot chai, though power outages can happen more frequently.

How to Reach Uttarakhand
Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport (DED) is your best entry point if you're heading to the Garhwal region (Mussoorie, Landour, Chopta). For Kumaon destinations like Mukteshwar or Almora, Pantnagar Airport (PGH) is closer, though flights are limited. Most travelers fly into Delhi and take the overnight overnight train like the Ranikhet Express to Kathgodam or the Dehradun Shatabdi.
From Delhi's ISBT Kashmiri Gate, Volvo and UPSRTC buses run direct routes to Dehradun, Haldwani, and Rishikesh. Private cabs from Delhi airport to Mukteshwar cost roughly ₹5,000 to ₹7,000 and take about 8 to 9 hours depending on traffic.
Getting Around
Local shared jeeps (Vikrams) are cheap if you're hopping between towns, but they get packed. For a workation, renting a scooter or a self-drive car from Dehradun or Haldwani makes the most sense so you can explore cafes and viewpoints on weekends.
If you prefer not to drive, local taxi unions have fixed rates for sightseeing. Always negotiate before stepping into a cab, or better yet, use local car rental apps operating out of Dehradun.
Top Things to Do
- Sunset Hikes: Finish your workday at 6 PM and catch the golden hour views from Chauli Ki Jali in Mukteshwar.
- Cafe Hopping: Landour has legendary spots like Sister’s Bazaar where you can work with a view of the Doon valley.
- Weekend Treks: Tackle the Nag Tibba trek or Dayara Bugyal over a Saturday and Sunday.
- Stargazing: Away from city lights, places like Kasar Devi offer incredible astrophotography opportunities.
Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path
Skip crowded Nainital and head to Hartola, a quiet hamlet near Mukteshwar surrounded by apple orchards. It has surprisingly strong 4G networks and practically zero tourists. Another stellar spot is Chaukori, offering unhindered panoramic views of the Nanda Devi and Panchachuli peaks.
Pro Tip: When booking an offbeat homestay in places like Hartola, always ask the host to send a speed test screenshot over WhatsApp before you pay the advance.
Accommodation Guide
Coliving spaces like The Bunker in Dehradun or structured homestays in Mukteshwar offer dedicated workspaces, backup generators, and community events. Expect to pay anywhere from ₹25,000 to ₹50,000 per month for a fully furnished room with meals included.
- Stays with Best Views: Lost Tribe Hostel (Landour), Rahim Homestay (Mukteshwar), Larisa Resort (Mussoorie).
Where to Eat
Mountain food is simple, hearty, and comforting. Look out for local Kumaoni thalis featuring Bhaang ki Chutney, Gahat Dal, and Madua ki Roti.
- Zostel Cafe (Mukteshwar): Great coffee and reliable Wi-Fi for working afternoon shifts.
- Landour Bakehouse: Famous for cinnamon rolls and colonial-era charm.
- Chirping Tales Cafe (Kasar Devi): Wood-fired pizzas with a view that stretches across the entire valley.
