Best Snowfall Places in Uttarakhand to Visit This Winter

Introduction

I’ve spent the last decade chasing powder across the Indian Himalayas, and Uttarakhand remains my absolute favorite. While Himachal gets crowded with weekend partiers, Uttarakhand’s higher reaches offer raw, silent wilderness where the snow piles up waist-deep.

If you're tired of scrolling through heavily filtered reels and want the real deal—crisp air, crunching frost, and roads blocked by fresh powder—this guide is for you. We’re breaking down the exact spots to visit, how much it costs, and what locals won’t tell you about winter driving.

Quick Facts About Snowfall Places in Uttarakhand

• Primary Snow Belt: Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Uttarkashi, and Pithoragarh districts.
• Altitude Range: 2,000 meters to 3,500+ meters above sea level.
• Peak Snow Window: Late December to mid-February.
• Major Hubs: Dehradun and Rishikesh serve as the primary entry points for all winter itineraries.

Pro Tip: Don't rely solely on weather apps for hill stations. Check live YouTube vlogs or local traffic police updates on X (Twitter) before starting your vehicle.

Best Time to Visit

Timing is everything when you're hunting for snow. If you go too early in December, you'll just find dry, cold grass. If you push past late February, the snow turns slushy and grey.

• Early December: High passes get powder, but main towns like Auli or Chopta might just be freezing cold without white cover.
• Mid-December to January: Prime time. Heavy western disturbances bring consistent snowfall, turning pine forests into pure white.
• February: Great for sunny days with thick snow cover, though lower altitudes start melting fast.

Weather Guide

Here is what you can actually expect on the ground during winter in the Uttarakhand hills:

How to Reach Uttarakhand Snow Destinations

Getting to the snow requires patience. Your journey almost always starts from Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport (DHR) or Dehradun Railway Station.

• By Air: Fly into Dehradun. From the airport, hire a private cab to Joshimath or Chopta. Expect to pay ₹5,000 to ₹7,000 for a one-way SUV drop.
• By Train: Trains run daily from Delhi to Dehradun (like the Nanda Devi Express).
• By Road: If you're driving from Delhi, take the NH 334 via Meerut and Haridwar. Total driving time to Chopta is roughly 9 to 10 hours under normal conditions.

Getting Around

Public transport in winter is notoriously unreliable once you climb above 2,000 meters. Shared jeeps (Sumos) run between Rudraprayag, Joshimath, and Ukhimath, but they stop operating early in the afternoon if snow starts falling.

Pro Tip: Rent a 4x4 or ensure your hired cab driver has experience driving on black ice. Front-wheel drive sedans frequently get stuck near Sari village or Chopta.

Top Things to Do

• Skiing in Auli: Auli boasts some of the best ski slopes in Asia. You can rent basic equipment for around ₹500 a day.
• Trek to Tungnath and Chandrashila: If trails are open and weather permits, the trek from Chopta gives you panoramic views of Nanda Devi.
• Photography in Kanatal: Perfect for amateur photographers looking for quiet pine forests blanketed in white without extreme physical exertion.
• Ropeway Ride in Joshimath-Auli: One of the longest ropeways in Asia. It costs roughly ₹1,000 per person and offers jaw-dropping views of snow-capped peaks.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Skip overcrowded Mussoorie and head straight to these lesser-known winter paradises:

• Munsiyari: Located in the Johar Valley of Pithoragarh, this remote hamlet offers front-row seats to the Panchachuli peaks. It gets heavy snow and very few tourists.
• Dayara Bugyal: Instead of trekking to Kedarnath, hike up to Dayara Bugyal near Uttarkashi for vast alpine meadows covered in pristine snow.
• Khaliya Top: A short trek from Munsiyari that rewards you with untouched white expanses and total silence.

Accommodation Guide

Winter stays range from basic government guest houses to cozy wooden homestays. Central heating is rare, so look for places providing heavy quilts and room heaters.

Where to Eat

Mountain food in winter is all about high calories and warmth. You won't find fancy restaurants in places like Chopta or Munsiyari.

• Local Delicacies: Try Kafuli (a spinach and fenugreek curry), Mandua ki Roti (finger millet flatbread), and piping hot Aloo ke Gutke.
• Eateries to Note: Stop by the roadside dhabas near Kund for fresh parathas. In Joshimath, Hotel Nanda offers incredible Garhwali thalis that will cost you around ₹250.

Budget Breakdown

Planning a 4-day winter trip from Dehradun? Here is a realistic cost breakdown per person on a twin-sharing basis:

Packing Checklist

Don't let the cold ruin your trip. Pack smart with these essential items:

• Thermal innerwear (at least 2 pairs of merino wool or fleece-lined).
• Waterproof snow boots with deep rubber treads.
• Windproof and waterproof outer jacket (Gore-Tex or equivalent).
• UV-protection sunglasses (snow blindness is real).
• Power banks (batteries drain rapidly in sub-zero temperatures).
• Basic first aid, altitude sickness tablets, and heavy moisturizers.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Traveling with bald tires or front-wheel-drive cars without snow chains. Always carry tire chains if you're driving past Joshimath in January.

• Stay Hydrated: Cold weather tricks your body into thinking it doesn't need water, leading to altitude fatigue.
• Network Failures: BSNL and Jio work best in remote areas, but expect total blackouts during heavy storms. Download offline Google Maps.

Nearby Attractions

• Badrinath Highway Views: The drive along the Alaknanda river offers frozen waterfalls in January.
• Vishprayag: Watch the confluence of the Alaknanda and Dhauliganga rivers surrounded by snowy cliffs.
