Introduction
I still remember my daughter's absolute amazement the first time she saw real snow piling up on the pine trees in Uttarakhand. She didn't want to go back inside the hotel, even as her gloves soaked through. If you're planning a winter trip with your kids, finding the right spot matters. You don't want a place that gets entirely cut off by avalanches, nor do you want a slushy parking lot masquerading as a winter wonderland.
Over the past decade of traveling through the Garhwal and Kumaon Himalayas, I've tested out these destinations with my own family. We've slid down slopes, dealt with motion sickness on hairpin bends, and found the coziest rooms with functioning heaters. Let's look at the absolute best snowfall spots in Uttarakhand that are safe, accessible, and thoroughly enjoyable for families.
Quick Facts About Best Snowfall Places in Uttarakhand for Families
- Primary Region: Garhwal and Kumaon Himalayas, Uttarakhand
- Peak Snow Season: Late December to mid-February
- Best Destinations: Auli, Mussoorie, Dhanaulti, Chopta, Munsiyari
- Ideal Trip Duration: 5 to 7 days
- Family Friendliness Score: 9/10 (with proper acclimatization)
Best Time to Visit
Timing your snow trip is tricky because nature doesn't follow a strict calendar. Generally, if you want guaranteed snow without getting stranded in a blizzard, aim for the second week of January through the first week of February.
December can be a gamble. You might catch a great spell right around Christmas, or you might find dry, brown hills. March brings melting snow and muddy slush, which isn't ideal when you're managing toddlers or young kids.
Pro Tip: Keep an eye on local weather reports a week before your trip. If a Western Disturbance is hitting North India, you're guaranteed fresh powder in places like Auli and Chopta.
Weather Guide
Here is what you can realistically expect from the weather in the upper reaches of Uttarakhand during the winter months.
How to Reach
Most family trips to Uttarakhand begin from Dehradun, which hosts Jolly Grant Airport (DED) and a major railway station. If you're coming from Delhi, driving takes about 5 to 7 hours depending on your destination.
- To Mussoorie & Dhanaulti: Fly into Dehradun, then hire a cab (₹2,500 to ₹3,500) for a 1.5 to 2.5-hour scenic drive.
- To Auli: Fly or take a train to Dehradun or Rishikesh, then drive up via Devprayag and Joshimath (approx. 270 km, 8-9 hours). Alternatively, take the ropeway from Joshimath.
- To Chopta: Drive from Rishikesh via Rudraprayag and Ukhimath (approx. 160 km, 6 hours).
Getting Around
Navigating mountain roads with kids requires patience and reliable transport. Self-driving is risky in peak winter unless you have an AWD/4WD vehicle and experience driving on black ice.
Book a local cab for your entire itinerary. Drivers in Uttarakhand know these roads intimately and carry tire chains for icy stretches. Expect to pay around ₹3,000 to ₹4,000 per day for an Innova or Ertiga, which comfortably fits a family of four plus luggage.
Top Things to Do
Snow trips aren't just about looking at white landscapes; it's about keeping kids engaged. Here are the top activities your family will love:
- Take the Auli Ropeway: It’s one of the longest in Asia. The views of Nanda Devi peak from the cable car will leave your kids speechless. Cost is roughly ₹1,000 per adult for a round trip.
- Sledding in Dhanaulti: Eco-Park in Dhanaulti offers gentle snow slopes where local vendors rent out wooden sleds for ₹200–₹300. Perfect for younger children.
- Build a Snow Family at Lal Tibba (Mussoorie): The highest point in Mussoorie gets decent snow accumulation and has fewer crowds than Mall Road.
- Learn to Ski in Auli: The Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) runs basic ski courses. You can hire instructors by the hour for the kids.
Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path
If you want to escape the crowded Mall Roads of Mussoorie or Nainital, head to Kanatal or Dayara Bugyal.
Kanatal is just 35 kilometers past Dhanaulti and stays remarkably quiet. It features dense pine forests that catch heavy winter snow, making it an idyllic spot for a family picnic. Another stunning option is Kartik Swami near Rudraprayag, though it requires a short trek suitable only for families with older children.
Accommodation Guide
Staying somewhere with reliable heating and hot water is non-negotiable when traveling with family in sub-zero temperatures.
- Auli: Clifftop Club offers ski-in, ski-out luxury with stunning mountain views. For mid-range budgets, Blue Poppy Resorts provides cozy wooden cottages.
- Mussoorie: Sterling Mussoorie or Welcomhotel The Savoy offer great family amenities and indoor play areas.
- Dhanaulti: Camp Awana or local boutique cottages give you a quiet forest stay.
Where to Eat
Mountain food in winter needs to be hot, calorie-dense, and comforting. You won't find fine dining in every snow destination, but local dhaba food hits the spot.
- In Mussoorie: Stop by Chick Chocolate on Mall Road for hot chocolate and wood-fired pizzas that kids adore. For local Garhwali thalis, try Little Llama Cafe.
- In Joshimath/Auli: Grab piping hot momos and maggi at roadside stalls near the ropeway base.
Common Mistake: Don't let kids eat yellow snow or untested street ice. Stick to bottled water and freshly cooked, steaming hot meals to avoid upset stomachs.

Packing for a snow trip with children requires strategic layering. Avoid heavy cotton as it retains moisture and makes you cold.
- Base Layers: Thermal tops and bottoms (at least 2 pairs per person).
- Mid Layers: Fleece jackets and woolen sweaters.
- Outer Layers: Waterproof, windproof jackets and snow pants.
- Footwear: Waterproof snow boots with good grip. Pack 3 pairs of thick woolen socks.
- Accessories: UV-protection sunglasses (snow glare is blinding), waterproof gloves, beanies, and lip balm.
- Medications: Motion sickness pills, basic cold/flu medicines, and a reliable first-aid kit.
Safety Tips & Common Mistakes
Mountain weather changes in minutes. Keep these safety pointers in mind:
- Acclimatization: Give your body a day to adjust to altitudes above 2,500 meters. Keep kids hydrated.
- Phone Connectivity: BSNL and Jio work best in remote areas like Auli and Chopta. Airtel can be spotty.
- Driving Caution: Never drive after dark on snow-covered mountain passes. Black ice is invisible and extremely dangerous.
Common Mistake: Forgetting sunglasses for children. The glare of sunlight bouncing off fresh snow can cause snow blindness and severe headaches.
