Best Things to Do in Nainital Other Than Boating: The Ultimate Local Guide

Introduction

Most travelers arrive in Nainital, rent a colorful paddleboat on Naini Lake, and call it a day. I’ve visited this Kumaoni hill station a dozen times over the last decade, and I can tell you that the real magic of Nainital begins precisely where the lakefront crowds thin out.

If you're looking for the best things to do in Nainital other than boating, you're in the right place. From scaling hidden ridge trails to biting into piping-hot bal mithai, let's explore the side of Nainital most tourists completely miss.

Best Time to Visit

Nainital changes character with every season. If you want clear blue skies and crisp mountain air, plan your trip between March and June. If you love romantic monsoons and misty pine forests, July through September offers dramatic views with a fraction of the summer crowd.

Winter (November to February) brings freezing temperatures and occasional snowfall at higher vantage points like Snow View and Tiffin Top.

Weather Guide

Pro Tip: Avoid visiting on summer weekends unless you enjoy bumper-to-bumper traffic jams along Mall Road.

How to Reach Nainital

Getting to Nainital is straightforward, though the final stretch involves winding mountain roads.

• By Air: The nearest airport is Pantnagar Airport (PGH), located 70 km away. A taxi from the airport to Nainital costs around ₹2,000 to ₹2,500 and takes roughly 2 hours.
• By Train: Kathgodam Railway Station (KGM) is the closest railhead, situated 34 km from Nainital. Trains like the Ranikhet Express connect Delhi to Kathgodam overnight. Shared jeeps (₹150–₹200 per seat) and private cabs (₹1,000–₹1,500) are readily available outside the station.
• By Road: Overnight Volvo buses run regularly from Delhi's Anand Vihar or Kashmiri Gate ISBT to Nainital, taking about 7 to 8 hours.

Getting Around

Nainital's town center around Mall Road is strictly pedestrian-friendly during peak hours. You'll get around best on foot.

For longer distances to viewpoints like Snow View or Tiffin Top, local Maruti Gypsy taxis are parked at Tallital and Mallital stands. Fixed rates apply, but always confirm the fare before hopping in. Walking remains the absolute best way to discover hidden cafes and stairwell shortcuts.

Top Things to Do

1. Hike up to Tiffin Top (Dorothy's Seat)

Skip the horse rides and hike up to Tiffin Top for an unforgettable panoramic view of the town and surrounding mountains. The trail starts near Dorothy's Seat and winds upward through thick oak and rhododendron forests for about 4 kilometers.

It takes roughly 1.5 hours of steady uphill walking. Pack a flask of hot tea and a few biscuits to enjoy at the summit while watching paragliders take off.

2. Explore the Eco Cave Gardens

Located in the Sukhatal area, just a 10-minute drive from Mall Road, the Eco Cave Gardens are a network of interconnected natural rocky caves. You'll have to crouch, crawl, and duck your way through the Panther Cave, Tiger Cave, and Cave Garden.

• Entry Fee: ₹70 for adults, ₹50 for kids
• Timing: 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM

Pro Tip: Wear sturdy sneakers with good grip. The rock surfaces inside can get slick, and your knees will thank you.

3. Ride the Nainital Ropeway to Snow View

The aerial ropeway connects Mallital to Snow View Point at 2,270 meters. The 3-minute cable car ride offers a bird's-eye view of Naini Lake and the glittering rooftops below.

Once at Snow View, you'll get a clear view of the majestic snow-capped Himalayan peaks like Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Nanda Kot on a clear day.

• Ticket Price: ₹300–₹350 return per person

4. Step Back in Time at the Governor's House (Raj Bhawan)

Built in 1899 and designed in the Victorian Gothic architectural style, the Raj Bhawan looks like a Scottish castle dropped into the Kumaon hills. It features 113 rooms, a vast golf course, and manicured gardens filled with native flora.

Guided tours are available throughout the day, but you must book your slot online or at the gate with valid photo ID.

5. Spot Leopards and Birds at Pangot

Just 15 kilometers away from the town center lies Pangot, a quiet hamlet world-famous for bird watching. Over 250 bird species, including the lammergeier vulture, blue-winged minla, and spotted forktail, call these forests home.

Rent a taxi for a half-day trip to Pangot. Even if you aren't an avid birder, the misty drive through the Naina Peak ridge is worth every rupee.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

6. Trek to Naina Peak (China Peak)

At 2,615 meters, Naina Peak is the highest point in Nainital. Most tourists skip this 6-kilometer trek from Mallital because it requires stamina, which means you'll likely have the summit entirely to yourself.

On a clear morning, the views stretch across the entire snowy Himalayan range into Tibet.

7. Discover Sattal (Seven Interconnected Lakes)

Located 22 kilometers from Nainital, Sattal is an unspoiled paradise of seven freshwater lakes surrounded by dense oak and pine trees. Unlike Naini Lake, motorized water sports are banned here, keeping the atmosphere pristine and peaceful.

Spend an afternoon walking through the butterfly museum or kayaking on Ram Tal.
