Introduction
Living in Delhi means you're constantly dodging traffic, breathing smog, and craving mountain air. Luckily, Uttarakhand sits right on your doorstep. You can leave office on Friday evening and wake up to pine-scented breezes by Saturday morning.
Over the past 15 years, I've driven up almost every highway, state road, and dirt track connecting Delhi to the Garhwal and Kumaon foothills. This isn't a generic aggregation of travel spots. It's a field-tested blueprint for the best weekend trips in Uttarakhand from Delhi, complete with real distances, real food recommendations, and honest budgets.
Quick Facts About Uttarakhand Weekend Trips
- Nearest Hill Station from Delhi: Lansdowne (approx. 260 km)
- Primary Departure Point: ISBT Kashmiri Gate, Anand Vihar, or Majnu Ka Tila for buses; Delhi-Meerut Expressway for self-drives.
- Ideal Trip Duration: 2 nights, 3 days (Friday evening to Sunday night).
- Major Hubs: Dehradun, Rishikesh, Kathgodam, and Haridwar.
- Currency: Indian Rupee (INR). Carry cash as UPI doesn't work in remote cafes.
Best Time to Visit
Uttarakhand is a year-round destination, but your weekend experience depends entirely on the season. If you want pleasant weather without shivering, target March to June. For snow seekers, January and February bring magical white weekends to places like Kanatal and Dhanaulti.
Monsoons (July to August) bring dramatic valley views and roaring waterfalls, but road blockages from landslides are common. Plan accordingly if you're on a tight 48-hour schedule.

How to Reach Uttarakhand from Delhi
Getting out of Delhi requires strategy. If you leave past 7:00 AM on a Saturday, expect to waste three hours just crossing Ghaziabad.
- By Car: Take the Delhi-Meerut Expressway to bypass city traffic, then connect to NH 334 toward Roorkee/Haridwar or Najibabad toward Lansdowne.
- By Train: Overnight trains like the Mussoorie Express (to Dehradun) or Ranikhet Express (to Kathgodam) save you valuable daytime hours.
- By Bus: Volvo and Scania buses run nightly from ISBT Kashmiri Gate to Dehradun, Rishikesh, and Haldwani. Tickets range from ₹600 to ₹1,400.
Pro Tip: Leave Delhi by 4:00 AM on Saturday (or Friday night post-8 PM) to beat the weekend truck traffic on the highways.
Getting Around
Once you arrive at your base town, self-drive rentals from Dehradun or Kathgodam offer maximum flexibility. Shared jeeps (Vikrams and Sumos) connect smaller hamlets like Chopta or Kanatal for ₹100–₹300 per seat. Hiring a private cab for the weekend costs roughly ₹3,000 to ₹4,500 per day including fuel and driver allowance.
