What Is the Cheapest Way to Travel Around Uttarakhand?

Introduction

I spent three months backpacking across the Garhwal and Kumaon regions of Uttarakhand, tracking every single rupee I spent. Most travelers make the mistake of hiring private cabs from Dehradun or Rishikesh, which instantly drains ₹4,000 to ₹7,000 a day. If you want to experience the true magic of the Himalayas on a shoestring budget, you need to rely on UTC (Uttarakhand Transport Corporation) buses and local shared jeeps (Max/Bolero cabs).

The cheapest way to travel around Uttarakhand is by combining state-run buses for long-distance trunk routes and shared jeeps for remote mountain valleys. You can easily keep your daily transport costs under ₹300 if you know the right boarding points and timetables. Let’s dive into the exact mechanics of budget travel in the Land of Gods.

Quick Facts About Uttarakhand Budget Travel

• Primary Transport: UTC Buses and 10-seater Bolero shared jeeps.
• Average Daily Budget: ₹800 - ₹1,200 ($10 - $15 USD) including stay, food, and transport.
• Cheapest Accommodation: GMVN tourist rest houses, gurudwaras (Hemkund Sahib/Rishikesh), and village homestays.
• Currency: Indian Rupee (INR). Carry enough cash; ATMs are rare in upper reaches like Chopta or Munsiyari.
• Connectivity: Jio and Airtel have the best 4G coverage; BSNL is essential in border areas like Pithoragarh.

Best Time to Visit

If you are traveling on a strict budget, timing matters. Monsoon brings heavy landslides and slashed hotel rates, while peak summer (May-June) drives up homestay prices.

Weather Guide

Uttarakhand's weather changes drastically based on altitude. Hill stations like Mussoorie and Nainital stay pleasant, while higher reaches like Chopta, Auli, and Kedarnath drop below freezing point even in October.

Pro Tip: Always pack a windproof fleece and a lightweight rain poncho regardless of the month you visit. Mountain weather turns in minutes.

How to Reach Uttarakhand

Getting to the state gateway is your first major expense. You have two main entry hubs: Dehradun (for Garhwal) and Kathgodam (for Kumaon).

• From Delhi to Dehradun: Take the overnight UTC bus from ISBT Kashmiri Gate. It costs around ₹450-₹550 and takes 6-7 hours. Alternatively, the Mussoorie Express train from Old Delhi to Dehradun costs roughly ₹180 in sleeper class.
• From Delhi to Kathgodam: The Ranikhet Express train runs overnight and costs about ₹200 for sleeper class, dropping you straight at the Kumaon gateway.

Getting Around

To travel cheap, forget Uber or pre-booked rentals. Your best friends are the state bus stands (Adda) and shared jeep counters.

• UTC Buses: The backbone of long-distance transit. A bus from Dehradun to Joshimath costs about ₹420 for a 280 km journey.
• Shared Jeeps: These depart from local taxi stands as soon as all 10 seats fill up. A ride from Rudraprayag to Ukhimath costs around ₹100-₹120.
• Walking/Hitching: For short local stretches between villages, walking is free and lets you experience the pine forests up close.

Top Things to Do

Budget travel doesn't mean missing out on experiences. Most of Uttarakhand's best assets are completely free.

• Trek to Tungnath and Chandrashila: Starting from Chopta, this 4 km trek is free to enter and offers a 360-degree view of Himalayan peaks.
• Explore Pangot Bird Sanctuary: Walk through the oak forests near Nainital to spot over 200 bird species without paying any entry fee.
• Ganga Aarti at Haridwar or Rishikesh: Sit on the steps of Triveni Ghat or Har Ki Pauri at sunset. It costs ₹0 and provides a profound cultural experience.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Skip overcrowded Mussoorie and head to places that remain light on your wallet and heavy on charm.

• Sari Village: The base for Deoria Tal trek. Homestays here cost ₹500 a night including home-cooked local meals.
• Munsiyari: Tucked away in Kumaon facing the Panchachuli peaks. Shared jeeps from Thal to Munsiyari cost ₹150.
• Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary: Entry is ₹150, and you can stay inside at the KMVN rest house for a budget price while waking up to panoramic mountain views.

Accommodation Guide

Accommodation can ruin a budget if you book through mainstream luxury apps. Use these local alternatives instead.

Pro Tip: GMVN (Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam) and KMVN (Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam) government tourist houses offer the safest, cleanest, and most reliable budget rooms in remote areas. Book directly on their official websites.

Where to Eat

Eat where the locals and truck drivers eat to keep food expenses under ₹200 a day.

• Local Dhabas: Look for roadside eateries serving Dal Bhaat, Rajma Chawal, and roti for ₹70-₹100 a plate.
• Try Local Delicacies: Taste Mandua ki Roti (finger millet flatbread) with Jhangora kheer or Kafuli (spinach curry) at small village tea stalls for under ₹80.
• Recommended Spot: Mohan Ji Puri वाले in Devprayag serves legendary hot puris and potato curry for ₹50.

Budget Breakdown (with INR tables)

Here is an exact 7-day budget blueprint for a solo backpacker traveling through the Garhwal circuit (Dehradun - Rudraprayag - Chopta - Joshimath - Rishikesh).

Packing Checklist

Keep your backpack light so you can easily hop on and off crowded buses.

• 1 Sturdy 40L-50L backpack
• 3 pairs of quick-dry clothes and 1 thermal inner layer
• 1 Waterproof jacket or windcheater
• Sturdy broken-in trekking shoes
• Reusable steel water bottle (fill up at natural springs for free)
• Basic medical kit with ORS and motion sickness tablets for winding mountain roads

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Traveling without motion sickness medication. The roads from Rishikesh to Badrinath or Munsiyari have thousands of hairpin bends. Take a tablet before boarding shared jeeps.

• Start Early: Mountain buses and shared jeeps usually operate between 5:00 AM and 2:00 PM. Never plan late evening travel.
• Keep Offline Maps: Download maps.me or Google Maps offline areas; mobile signal drops frequently past district headquarters.
• Respect Local Customs: Cover your shoulders and knees when visiting rural villages and ancient shrines like Kedarnath or Tungnath.

Nearby Attractions

If you have extra days, extend your budget trip to these neighboring spots:

• Jim Corbett National Park (Dhikuli Zone): Accessible via Ramnagar, great for budget jeep safaris.
• Kanatal: A quiet pine-forested hamlet between Chamba and Mussoorie, perfect for a peaceful weekend.
• Lansdowne: A quiet cantonment town reachable via a cheap bus ride from Kotdwar.
