Dehradun Travel Guide: Best Places, Food, Shopping & Things to Do

Introduction

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve pulled into Dehradun off the Delhi highway, usually chasing cooler air in the Garhwal foothills. Most travelers treat Uttarakhand's capital as a mere pitstop on the way to Mussoorie or Dhanaulti. That's a mistake. If you slow down and spend three or four days here, you’ll find a city defined by colonial-era boarding schools, aromatic bakeries, limestone caves, and a surprisingly diverse culinary scene.

Over the last fifteen years of exploring this valley, I’ve watched the city expand. Yet, the old-world charm around Rajpur Road and the cantonment area remains stubbornly intact. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a longer mountain expedition, this guide cuts through the tourist fluff to give you the exact spots, prices, and insider tips you actually need.

Quick Facts About Dehradun

Before we dive into the itinerary, let’s get you oriented with some quick baseline facts about the Doon Valley.

• State: Uttarakhand
• Elevation: 640 meters (2,100 feet) above sea level
• Language: Garhwali, Hindi, English
• Famous For: Basmati rice, litchis, elite residential schools, and proximity to hill stations
• Ideal Trip Duration: 3 to 4 days

Best Time to Visit

Dehradun's climate shifts dramatically across seasons. If you want pleasant weather for walking around Forest Research Institute or exploring Robber's Cave, target the autumn and spring months.

Monsoons (July to September) bring heavy downpours that cause water-logging in low-lying areas and make visiting natural water caves risky due to sudden flash floods. Winters (December to January) get legitimately cold, with temperatures dropping to 3°C at night, though daytime sun makes exploring comfortable.

Weather Guide

Pro Tip: October and November offer the crispest mountain views of the outer Himalayas without the summer rush.

How to Reach Dehradun

Getting to Dehradun is straightforward, whether you're driving from the capital or flying in.

• By Air: Jolly Grant Airport (DED) sits about 25 km from the city center. A pre-paid airport taxi to Clock Tower costs roughly ₹800 to ₹1,000.
• By Train: Dehradun Railway Station (DDN) is well-connected to Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata. The overnight Mussoorie Express or the morning Shatabdi Express are your best bet from New Delhi.
• By Road: Volvo and AC buses run overnight from Delhi’s ISBT Kashmiri Gate to Dehradun, taking about 6 to 7 hours. Driving your own car takes roughly 5.5 hours via the newly upgraded Delhi-Dehradun expressway network.

Getting Around

Navigating Dehradun requires a mix of transport modes depending on where you're headed.

• Auto-Rickshaws: Ubiquitous and fine for short hops, but make sure they use the meter or fix the fare before stepping in. A ride from the railway station to Rajpur Road shouldn't exceed ₹150–₹200.
• App-Based Cabs: Ola and local taxi services operate within city limits, making transit hassle-free.
• Scooter Rentals: Several local vendors near the railway station rent gearless scooters for around ₹400 to ₹500 per day. This is the absolute best way to beat traffic and explore Rajpur and Clement Town.

Top Things to Do

Don't just pass through. Here are the experiences that make Dehradun worth your time.

1. Walk the Grounds of the Forest Research Institute (FRI)

Spread over 450 acres, the FRI main building is an architectural masterpiece of Greco-Roman and colonial design. You might recognize it from Bollywood films like Student of the Year or Rockstar. Entry to the campus costs ₹50, and the timber and pathology museums inside are genuinely fascinating.

2. Wade Through Robber’s Cave (Guchhupani)

Located about 8 km from the city center, Guchhupani is a natural river cave formation where a stream flows right through a narrow gorge. You'll wade through ankle-deep water for about a kilometer to reach a hidden waterfall. Entry is ₹35.

Common Mistake: Wearing brand new sneakers or leather shoes into Robber's Cave. Rent rubber floaters at the gate for ₹50 instead, or your footwear will be ruined.

3. Seek Solitude at Tapkeshwar Temple

Built inside a natural cave along the Asan riverbed, this ancient Shiva temple drops cold sulfur spring water directly over the primary shivling. It’s peaceful in the early mornings before the tour buses arrive.

4. Pay Respects at Mindrolling Monastery

Head down to Clement Town to experience one of the largest Buddhist centers in India. The massive Stupa, golden Buddha statue, and quiet monastic gardens provide a stark, calming contrast to the city buzz.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Want to ditch the crowds? Add these lesser-known spots to your itinerary.

• Maldevta: A quiet river valley about 18 km east of the city. It’s a favorite local spot for weekend picnics, wading in shallow streams, and catching unhindered sunset views over the hills.
• Santala Devi Temple: Perched on a cliff, this spot requires a scenic 2-kilometer uphill trek through dense forest. You’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the entire Doon Valley.
• Library at Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology: For science nerds, their museum houses rare rock samples, fossils, and tectonic displays that explain how the Himalayas formed.

Accommodation Guide

Where you stay shapes your trip. If you want nightlife and cafes, stay near Rajpur Road. If you want peace, look for homestays closer to Purkul or Pacific Hills.

• Budget: Hostels like GoStops or Zostel Dehradun offer clean dorms and social vibes.
• Mid-Range: Hotels like Hotel Madhuban or Lemon Tree provide reliable comfort, great locations, and solid breakfast spreads.
• Luxury: Welcomhotel by ITC Hotels, The Savoy Mussoorie (nearby), or Amanbagh-style luxury boutique estates tucked into the foothills offer five-star pampering.

Where to Eat

Dehradun's food scene blends Tibetan momos, Kumaoni flavors, and colonial bakery traditions.

• Pacific Himalayan Bakery & Cafe: Order their classic chicken patties and cinnamon rolls on Rajpur Road.
• Kalsang Ama Cafe: Legendary spot for authentic Tibetan thukpa and momos near Paltan Bazaar.
• Ellora's Melting Moments: You cannot leave without buying a box of their legendary home-baked rusks and peanut cookies from the Old Cantonment Road shop.
• Black Pepper: For reliable North Indian and Mughlai curries in a cozy setting.

Budget Breakdown

Here is what a realistic 3-day trip to Dehradun will cost you per person in INR.

Packing Checklist

• Comfortable walking shoes and quick-dry sandals for water caves.
• Light jacket or fleece (even in summer, hill evenings drop in temperature).
• Reusable water bottle to cut down single-use plastics.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

• Avoid Monsoons for Trekking: River beds like Maldevta and Robber’s Cave flash-flood quickly during heavy downpours.
• Monkey Caution: Keep food items packed securely around temples like Tapkeshwar; the resident rhesus macaques are fearless.
• Traffic Sense: Driving in Paltan Bazaar is chaotic; park your vehicle outside and walk the market lanes.

Once you’ve conquered Dehradun, extend your journey to these iconic nearby destinations:
