Introduction: The Engineering Marvel of Gulmarg Gondola
The Gulmarg Gondola is not merely a transport utility; it is an alpine journey that lifts you from lush pine forests into the high-altitude glacial zone of the Pir Panjal range. Operating in two distinct stages, this iconic cable car system is one of the highest and longest in the world, serving as the literal backbone of Kashmir's tourism and winter sports economy.
Whether you are chasing the legendary deep powder snow of Apharwat Peak in January or seeking a cool escape across the wildflower-strewn meadows of Kongdoori in July, understanding how the system operates is critical. Most travelers arrive unprepared for long queues, variable weather closures, and strict ticketing portals. This definitive 2026 guide cuts through the confusion, providing field-tested intelligence on ticketing, safety, and timing.
Quick Facts & Essential Logistics
Navigating Gulmarg requires a solid grasp of local transit realities. The base station sits at an elevation of 2,650 meters (8,694 feet) within the main bowl of Gulmarg. It is easily reachable by road from Srinagar, located approximately 52 kilometers away. A standard private cab ride takes between 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic through Tangmarg.
- Distance from Srinagar: 52 km
- Average Driving Time: 1.5 to 2 hours via Tangmarg
- Base Station Elevation: 2,650 meters (8,694 feet)
- Official Booking Portal: J&K Cable Car Corporation (jkcablecar.com)
- Operating Days: Monday to Sunday (subject to weather; maintenance usually scheduled on specific weekdays or high-wind days)
Deep Dive: Phase 1 and Phase 2 Gondola
The ropeway system is engineered into two separate rope sections. You cannot purchase a Phase 2 ticket without holding a Phase 1 ticket, as the journey requires a mandatory transfer at the middle station.
Phase 1: Gulmarg to Kongdoori
- Distance Covered: Approx. 6.2 km
- Elevation Gain: From 2,650m to 3,096m (10,157 feet)
- Ride Duration: 12 to 15 minutes
- Experience: The cabins glide smoothly over towering silver fir and pine forests, offering sweeping views of the valley floor. Kongdoori station opens up to a vast alpine bowl. In summer, it features gentle walking trails, horse riding paths, and the lower edge of the world-famous Gulmarg Golf Course. In winter, this zone transforms into a beginner-friendly ski slope with certified ski schools and equipment rental huts.
Phase 2: Kongdoori to Apharwat Peak
- Distance Covered: Approx. 2.5 km
- Elevation Gain: From 3,096m to 3,979m (13,054 feet)
- Ride Duration: 10 to 12 minutes
- Experience: This is the high-stakes section of the ride. The terrain shifts from pine forest to barren, rocky alpine scree and permanent snowfields. The cabins cross steep ridges with vertigo-inducing drops. At Apharwat Peak, the air is thin, and the views extend toward Nanga Parbat on exceptionally clear days. In winter, this station acts as the launch pad for advanced freeride skiers and snowboarders tackling extreme off-piste bowls.
2026 Ticket Pricing & Cost Breakdown
Ticket prices for the cable car gulmarg system are regulated by the Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation. Always book through the official website weeks in advance during peak seasons.
Expert Tip: Never buy tickets from unauthorized touts outside the station. Counterfeit vouchers or inflated reseller packages are common, and official staff strictly verify government-issued photo IDs matching the online booking barcode.
Best Time to Ride & Seasonal Access
Gulmarg's dual personality means your gondola experience will vary drastically depending on the month you visit.
Suggested 2-Day Gulmarg Itinerary
A single day is often rushed, especially when factoring in weather delays. A two-day base in Gulmarg guarantees a successful summit attempt.
- Day 1: Arrival & Meadow Exploration
- Morning: Drive from Srinagar (1.5 hours), check into your hotel, and pick up rental gear if skiing.
- Afternoon: Stroll through St. Mary's Church, walk the central meadow, or take a gentle horse ride to Khilanmarg viewpoint.
- Evening: Savor traditional Kashmiri Wazwan at your hotel or local eateries like Nedous Dining Room.
- Day 2: The Gondola Mission & Departure
- Morning: Queue early (by 8:30 AM) for the Phase 1 and Phase 2 gondola ride to Apharwat Peak.
- Afternoon: Spend 2 hours exploring the snowfields at the top, then descend to Kongdoori for a hot tea.
- Evening: Check out and drive back to Srinagar or onward to Pahalgam.
Altitude Sickness & Mountain Safety
Ascending from 2,650 meters to nearly 4,000 meters in under 30 minutes places significant physiological stress on the human body. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a real risk at Apharwat Peak.
Warning Signs: Mild headaches, dizziness, nausea, and shortness of breath are common indicators of rapid ascent. Do not exert yourself physically immediately upon exiting the Phase 2 cabin. Walk slowly, stay hydrated with electrolyte water, and carry prescribed medications if you are sensitive to altitude changes.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can I book Gulmarg Gondola tickets on the spot?
While ticket counters exist at the base station, same-day tickets sell out rapidly during peak winter and summer seasons. It is highly recommended to book online weeks in advance via the official J&K Cable Car Corporation portal.
2. Is Phase 2 of the Gulmarg Gondola open year-round?
Phase 2 (Kongdoori to Apharwat Peak) closes frequently due to high-speed winds, heavy blizzards, or routine safety maintenance. Always check weather forecasts and operational status at the base station before purchasing combined tickets.
3. What is the maximum altitude reached by the Gulmarg Gondola?
The second phase of the cable car reaches Apharwat Peak at an elevation of 3,979 meters (13,054 feet) above sea level, making it one of the highest operating ropeways in the world.
4. How long does the complete gondola ride take?
The actual transit time is about 25 to 30 minutes total (15 mins for Phase 1 and 12 mins for Phase 2). However, due to queue waiting times and transfers at Kongdoori, you should budget 3 to 4 hours for the complete round-trip experience.
5. Do I need medical clearance to visit Phase 2 of the gondola?
No medical certificate is officially required to board the cable car. However, because Phase 2 sits at nearly 4,000 meters, individuals with severe heart conditions, asthma, or acute hypertension should consult a physician before ascending.
6. Are children allowed on Phase 2 of the Gulmarg Gondola?
Yes, children are allowed on both phases. However, infants and toddlers under 3 years old are generally discouraged from taking Phase 2 due to extreme cold and the high risk of altitude sickness.
7. What happens if Phase 2 closes after I buy a combined ticket?
If Phase 2 closes due to sudden weather deterioration after you have already ridden Phase 1, the J&K Cable Car Corporation typically issues a refund for the unused Phase 2 portion upon presenting your ticket at the refund desk.
8. Is ski equipment included in the gondola ticket price?
No, gondola tickets cover only the cable car ride. Ski equipment rentals, snow boots, heavy jackets, and certified instructor fees must be hired separately from authorized vendors near the base or Kongdoori stations.
9. Can I visit Gulmarg as a day trip from Srinagar?
Yes, Gulmarg is located 52 km from Srinagar, making a day trip feasible in 1.5 to 2 hours each way. However, staying overnight is recommended to secure early morning gondola slots before afternoon clouds roll in.
