Introduction
I’ll be honest: my first solo bus ride up the winding mountain roads of Uttarakhand scared the life out of me. The drop-offs are sheer, the traffic is chaotic, and the network vanishes just when you need it most. But once you crack the code of local travel here, it becomes one of the most rewarding regions in India for a solo traveler.
Whether you’re eyeing the backpacker trails of Rishikesh and Kasar Devi or wanting to test your stamina on alpine treks, Uttarakhand rewards the prepared. I’ve put together this comprehensive guide based on years of road-testing routes, eating roadside maggi, and figuring out local transport so you don’t have to learn the hard way.
Quick Facts About Solo Uttarakhand Trips
Before you book your tickets, let's look at the baseline logistics. Uttarakhand splits into two regions: Garhwal (west) and Kumaon (east). Both offer incredible mountains, but they have distinctly different vibes and transit networks.
Pro Tip: Don't rely on digital payments in mountain villages like Munsiyari or Chopta. Always keep at least ₹5,000 in physical cash.
Best Time to Visit
Deciding when to go depends entirely on what you want to experience. Winter brings snow, spring brings blooming rhododendrons, and post-monsoon offers the clearest Himalayan views.
If you want to trek, aim for May to June or September to October. If you want to see snowfall without getting stuck in massive traffic jams, January in places like Mukteshwar or Kanatal is magic.
Weather Guide
Here is what you can expect month-by-month in the mid-altitude zones (around 2,000 meters elevation):
How to Reach Uttarakhand
Reaching the state is straightforward, thanks to multiple transport links from Delhi.
By Air: Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun (DED) is the primary commercial airport. It connects daily with major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.
By Train: Major railheads include Dehradun, Haridwar, Kathgodam, and Ramnagar. The overnight overnight trains from Delhi (like the Ranikhet Express to Kathgodam or Mussoorie Express to Dehradun) are budget-friendly and save you a day of travel.
By Road: Volvo and UPSRTC buses run overnight from Delhi’s ISBT Kashmiri Gate to Dehradun, Rishikesh, and Haldwani. Tickets cost between ₹500 to ₹1,200 depending on bus class.
Getting Around
Once you’re in Uttarakhand, public transport relies heavily on state roadways buses (UTC) and shared jeeps called 'Vikrams' or 'Sumos'.
Shared jeeps are the lifeblood of mountain travel. They cost a fraction of private cabs—usually ₹150 to ₹400 per seat depending on distance—and leave as soon as all seats fill up. If you get carsick easily, grab the front passenger seat and stock up on motion-sickness pills.
Common Mistake: Trying to book private cabs for solo travel. It drains your budget fast. Always ask locals for the nearest 'Taxi Stand' where shared jeeps operate.
Top Things to Do
Solo travel gives you the freedom to move at your own pace. Here are absolute must-dos:
- Cafe Hop in Rishikesh: Hang out at Beatles Ashram and watch the evening Ganga Aarti from Triveni Ghat.
- Trek to Tungnath & Chandrashila: The highest Shiva temple in the world, followed by a sunrise view of the Nanda Devi peak.
- Backpack across Kumaon: Spend a few days in Kasar Devi (Almora), known for its hippie history and incredible sunset views at Crank’s Ridge.
- Experience Spiritual Calm in Haridwar: Witness the sensory overload of the evening prayers on the banks of the Ganges.
Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path
Skip the crowded tourist traps of Nainital and Mussoorie. Instead, check out these spots:
- Gunji & Adi Kailash region: For extreme adventure seekers looking for raw landscape.
- Sarmoli Village: Near Munsiyari, a community-driven homestay village run by local women.
- Kanatal: A quiet pine-covered hamlet just a few hours past Dehradun.
Accommodation Guide
Uttarakhand is extremely friendly to solo budget travelers. Hostels like Zostel, goSTOPS, and Bunkotel have expanded across Rishikesh, Mussoorie, Mukteshwar, and Dehradun.
Expect to pay ₹500 to ₹900 per night for a dormitory bed with fast Wi-Fi. If you prefer quiet solitude, local village homestays cost around ₹1,200 to ₹2,000 per night including home-cooked meals.
Where to Eat
Mountain food is hearty, simple, and comforting. Do not leave without trying 'Aloo Ke Gutke' (spiced potatoes), 'Bhaang Ki Chutney' (made from hemp seeds), and steaming hot momos.
Recommended spots:
- The Little Buddhist Cafe (McLeodganj vibe right in Rishikesh)
- Panorama Restaurant (Kasar Devi) for views and organic food
- Local roadside dhabas for authentic rajma-chawal

Packing Checklist
Packing smart means packing light. If you can't carry your backpack up three flights of stairs by yourself, you've packed too much.
- 40L to 50L Backpack with a rain cover
- Sturdy waterproof trekking shoes (break them in before the trip!)
- Layered clothing: Thermal innerwear, fleece jacket, and a windproof/waterproof outer shell
- Portable power bank (power cuts happen in remote villages)
- Basic first aid kit with altitude sickness (Diamox) and motion sickness tablets
- Reusable water bottle and water purification tablets
Safety Tips & Common Mistakes
Solo travel in Uttarakhand is generally safe, even for solo female travelers, provided you follow basic mountain rules.
- Don't hike remote trails alone after 4 PM; darkness falls quickly in the mountains.
- Share your live location and daily itinerary with a family member back home.
- Respect local customs, especially near holy shrines and temples.
Common Mistake: Underestimating mountain weather. It can go from blazing sunshine to a torrential hailstorm in twenty minutes. Always pack a rain jacket in your daypack.
