Can Kedarnath and Badrinath Be Covered in One Trip? The Definitive 2026 Guide

Introduction

Short answer: Yes, absolutely. In fact, covering Kedarnath and Badrinath together is one of the most popular pilgrimage routes in India, forming the core of the traditional 'Do Dham Yatra'.

After leading over a dozen treks through the Garhwal Himalayas, I can tell you that doing both shrines in a single trip isn't just possible—it is efficient if you map your logistics correctly. However, these aren't weekend getaways. You're dealing with high altitudes, unpredictable mountain weather, and winding roads that test even seasoned travelers.

Let’s break down exactly how you can pull this off without burning out, what it will cost you in INR, and the logistical hurdles nobody talks about.

Quick Facts About Kedarnath and Badrinath Yatra

Before booking tickets, you need to understand the scale of this journey. These two temples sit in entirely different river basins and require distinct approaches.

• Total Distance (Haridwar to Kedarnath to Badrinath and back): Approximately 650–700 km depending on your exact route.
• Ideal Duration: 5 to 7 days.
• Kedarnath Altitude: 3,583 meters (11,755 feet) above sea level.
• Badrinath Altitude: 3,133 meters (10,279 feet) above sea level.
• Mandatory Requirement: Biometric/Offline/Online registration via the Uttarakhand Tourism portal is strictly enforced.

Pro Tip: Don't underestimate the physical toll. Spend at least one full day acclimatizing in Rishikesh or Rudraprayag before heading into the higher altitudes.

Best Time to Visit

The windows to visit Kedarnath and Badrinath are dictated by the Hindu calendar, usually opening in April/May (Akshaya Tritiya) and closing in October/November (Diwali or Bhai Dooj).

• May to June: Peak season. Clear skies, but heavy crowds and peak pricing on hotels and helicopters.
• July to August: Monsoon season. Landslides are frequent on the Rishikesh-Badrinath highway (NH-7) and the Kedarnath walking track. I strongly advise skipping these months unless you enjoy heavy delays.
• September to October: The sweet spot. Post-monsoon greenery, crisp mountain views, and dwindling crowds as the closing date approaches.

Weather Guide

How to Reach

Your journey almost always starts from major transit hubs like Dehradun (Jolly Grant Airport) or Rishikesh/Haridwar railway stations.

• By Air: Fly into Dehradun. From there, hire a private cab to Guptkashi (base for Kedarnath) or book a Char Dham helicopter service operating from Phata or Sersi.
• By Train/Road: Take a train to Haridwar or Rishikesh. Board a GMVN bus or hire a dedicated cab (Swift Dzire or Ertiga) for the entire 6-day circuit.

Common Mistake: Travelers often try to use public buses between remote dhams. Schedules are erratic, and missing one bus can throw off your entire hotel bookings. Always secure a dedicated vehicle from your starting point.

Getting Around

Navigating between Kedarnath and Badrinath requires a mix of driving, trekking, and optional air transit.

• Road Transit: From Rishikesh, you drive via Srinagar and Rudraprayag to Guptkashi/Sonprayag (Kedarnath base). From Sonprayag, local shuttle jeeps take you to Gaurikund, where the 19 km trek begins.
• Trekking to Kedarnath: The 19 km trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath features gradual inclines. Ponies, palkis (palanquins), and pithus (porters) are available at Gaurikund.
• Helicopter Services: Available from Phata, Sersi, and Guptkashi directly to Kedarnath helipad. Must be booked weeks in advance on the IRCTC HeliYatra portal.
• Transit to Badrinath: From Kedarnath base, you drive back down to Rudraprayag and head up via Joshimath to Badrinath (approx. 7 hours of driving).

Top Things to Do

• Attend the Maha Abhishek / Evening Aarti at Badrinath: Sitting by the Alaknanda river while the temple bells ring during the evening aarti is an unforgettable experience.
• Take a Dip in Tapt Kund: A natural thermal sulfur spring right below the Badrinath temple. Taking a dip here is considered a mandatory ritual before entering the sanctum.
• Visit Mana Village: Just 3 km past Badrinath, this is India’s last village before the Tibet border. Check out Vyas Gufa and Bhankund.
• Explore Shankaracharya Samadhi: Located just behind the Kedarnath temple.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

• Vasuki Tal Trek: If you have an extra day in Kedarnath, hike an extra 8 km from the temple to Vasuki Tal for pristine glacial lake views away from the crowds.
• Vasundhara Falls: A short, refreshing hike near Mana village leading to a thundering waterfall where Pandavas are believed to have passed.
• Ukimath: Stay here instead of crowded Guptkashi. It’s the winter seat of Lord Kedarnath and offers stunning views of Chaukhamba peaks.

Accommodation Guide

Options range from government-run GMVN (Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam) tourist rest houses to private hotels and luxury Swiss tents.

• Sonprayag/Guptkashi: Look for Hotel Mandakini or GMVN Guptkashi.
• Kedarnath: GMVN tents/prefabs or budget lodges near the temple complex. Book these months in advance.
• Badrinath: Sarovar Portico (for luxury) or Hotel Snow Crest. Many choose budget ashrams near the bus stand.

Where to Eat

Mountain dining is simple, wholesome, and strictly vegetarian (mostly garlic-free options are available around temple premises).

• Himalayan Dhaba (Joshimath): Excellent piping hot Rajma Chawal and parathas.
• Badri Vishal Restaurant (Badrinath): Known for clean thalis and comforting tea after a cold darshan.
• Local roadside stalls serve Maggi, momos, and ginger tea every couple of kilometers along the trek.
