Introduction
Let’s be honest. If you visit Nainital or Mussoorie during peak season, you aren't experiencing the Himalayas—you're experiencing Delhi’s traffic jam transplanted to 2,000 meters altitude. Horns are blaring, parking costs a fortune, and your hotel view is likely just another hotel's water tank.
Over my 15 years of traveling through the Garhwal and Kumaon regions, I've watched famous hill stations lose their soul. That's why I put together this guide to the top 10 less crowded hill stations in Uttarakhand. These are spots where you'll still hear pine needles drop, chat with local shepherds, and watch Himalayan peaks turn gold at sunrise without a selfie stick blocking your view.
Quick Facts About Uttarakhand Offbeat Hills
Before we dive into the list, here are the baseline facts every traveler needs to know about exploring Uttarakhand's quieter side:
- Region Span: Divided into Garhwal (north-west) and Kumaon (south-east).
- Altitude Range: 1,500m to 3,000m above sea level.
- Connectivity: BSNL and Jio work best; Airtel drops out in deep valleys.
- ATM Availability: Extremely limited in offbeat spots. Carry at least ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 in cash.
Best Time to Visit
The best time depends entirely on what you want to see. If you love crisp mountain air and snow-capped peaks without the monsoon landslides, autumn (October to November) is unbeatable. Spring (March to April) brings blooming rhododendrons.
Pro Tip: Avoid Uttarakhand during school summer vacations (May-June) and Diwali weekend, even in offbeat villages, as spillover traffic reaches everywhere.

How to Reach
The gateway hubs for Uttarakhand are Dehradun (Jolly Grant Airport) for Garhwal and Pantnagar Airport for Kumaon. For train travelers, Dehradun Railway Station, Haridwar, and Kathgodam are the main railheads. From these hubs, you'll need to hire a private taxi or take a shared local jeep.
Getting Around
Public transport in offbeat hill stations is sparse. You’ll rely on shared sumos (jeeps) that run on fixed morning schedules between district headquarters and remote villages. Renting a self-drive car from Dehradun or Haldwani is the best way to maintain flexibility.
Top 10 Less Crowded Hill Stations
1. Munsiyari (Kumaon)
Perched at 2,298 meters overlooking the magnificent Panchachuli peaks, Munsiyari is a trekkers' paradise that mass tourism hasn't ruined yet. It’s the base for the Milam and Ralam glacier treks, but the town itself offers deep quiet.
- Distance from Kathgodam: 275 km (approx. 9 hours drive)
- Must See: Darkot village (famous for traditional hand-woven pashmina shawls) and Khalia Top.
2. Chopta (Garhwal)
Often called the 'Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand', Chopta is the starting point for the trek to Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple in the world. While trekkers visit by day, the meadows empty out by evening, leaving you under a canopy of stars.
- Distance from Rishikesh: 160 km (approx. 6 hours drive)
- Must See: Deoria Tal sunrise reflection of Chaukhamba peaks.
3. Kanatal (Garhwal)
Located just a few hours past Mussoorie, Kanatal feels like an entirely different planet. It’s covered in dense pine and deodar forests with zero commercial chaos.
- Distance from Dehradun: 78 km (approx. 3 hours drive)
- Must See: Surkanda Devi Temple (a scenic 2 km uphill walk through oak forests).
4. Abbott Mount (Kumaon)
This is a tiny, forgotten British-era hill station where time stopped in the early 1900s. There are only about 13 heritage bungalows scattered across a forested ridge.
- Distance from Tanakpur: 75 km (approx. 2.5 hours drive)
- Must See: The haunted Abbott Mount Church and panoramic Himalayan views.
5. Chakrata (Garhwal)
A restricted military cantonment area, Chakrata is rugged, pristine, and wonderfully free of standard tourist gimmicks. Foreign nationals require special permits to enter parts of this region.
- Distance from Dehradun: 88 km (approx. 3.5 hours drive)
- Must See: Tiger Fall, one of Uttarakhand's highest direct waterfalls.
6. Mukteshwar (Kumaon)
While Mukteshwar is gaining popularity, it still retains pockets of absolute silence, especially if you stay in the Chauli Ki Jaali ridge area rather than the main market.
- Distance from Kathgodam: 72 km (approx. 2.5 hours drive)
- Must See: IVRI campus trails and cliff-edge rock climbing.
7. Pauri (Garhwal)
Pauri offers one of the widest panoramic views of the snow-clad Himalayan arc, stretching from the Swargarohini peaks all the way to Nanda Devi.
- Distance from Rishikesh: 130 km (approx. 4.5 hours drive)
- Must See: Kandoliya Temple sunset point.
8. Chaukori (Kumaon)
Chaukori is a sleepy hamlet known primarily for its sprawling tea gardens and breathtaking sunrise views over Nanda Kot and Nanda Devi.
- Distance from Kathgodam: 175 km (approx. 6 hours drive)
- Must See: Berinag tea estates and local organic farms.
9. Harsil (Garhwal)
Located on the banks of the Bhagirathi River on the route to Gangotri, Harsil is famous for its apple orchards and deep river valleys.
- Distance from Dehradun: 215 km (approx. 7 hours drive)
- Must See: Dharali village for old wooden pahari architecture.
10. Lohaghat (Kumaon)
Rich in history and shrouded in pine forests, Lohaghat sits on the banks of the Lohawati River and offers a deeply authentic Kumaoni village experience.
- Distance from Tanakpur: 62 km (approx. 2 hours drive)
- Must See: Mayavati Ashram (where Swami Vivekananda stayed in 1901).
Accommodation Guide
Forget luxury 5-star chains in these areas. Instead, you'll find incredible homestays, GMVN (Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam) tourist rest houses, and heritage forest bungalows.
- Homestays: Best for cultural immersion and home-cooked pahari food (Cost: ₹1,500 - ₹3,000/night).
- Forest Rest Houses: Historic colonial-era properties requiring advance booking via the Uttarakhand Forest Department portal.
Where to Eat
Offbeat hill stations don't have fancy cafes. You'll be eating at local dhabas or your homestay. Make sure to try local Kumaoni and Garhwali delicacies:
- Kafuli: A rich spinach and fenugreek green gravy.
- Bhang ki Chutney: A tangy, nutty chutney made with roasted hemp seeds.
- Phaanu: A mixed lentil soup that is deeply comforting in the cold.
- Bal Mithai: A roasted khoya sweet coated in white sugar balls (originating from Almora).

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes
Common Mistake: Relying entirely on digital payments. Google Pay and Paytm do not work in remote hamlets like Abbott Mount or high-altitude ridges in Munsiyari. Always carry physical cash.
- Driving Safety: Mountain roads require patience. Never attempt overtaking on blind curves, and always yield to uphill traffic.
- Wildlife Awareness: Leopard sightings are common around dusk in wooded areas like Chakrata and Mukteshwar. Avoid walking alone after dark.
