Nainital Travel Guide: Best Places, Real Costs & 3-Day Itinerary

Introduction

Nainital rests around a eye-shaped freshwater lake at an altitude of 2,084 meters in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. For decades, travelers have headed up these winding mountain roads to catch relief from the plains' scorching summer heat or to see winter frost coating the pine trees.

However, modern travel in Nainital can quickly become overwhelming. Traffic jams on Mall Road, overpriced taxi unions, and overcrowded viewpoints often ruin what should be a peaceful mountain holiday.

I have spent over a decade exploring Kumaon's ridge lines, testing street stalls, and tracking seasonal road conditions. This guide strips away the generic tourist fluff. You will get exact taxi rates, local eateries serving real Kumaoni food, hidden forest trails where you won't bump into tour buses, and a practical 3-day route designed to beat the crowds.

Quick Facts About Nainital

• State: Uttarakhand
• District: Nainital (Kumaon Division)
• Elevation: 2,084 meters (6,837 feet) above sea level
• Nearest Railway Station: Kathgodam (KGD) - 34 km away
• Nearest Airport: Pantnagar (PGH) - 70 km away; New Delhi (DEL) - 300 km away
• Primary Lake: Naini Lake (Circumference: 3.5 km)
• Local Language: Hindi, Kumaoni, English
• Ideal Trip Duration: 3 Days / 2 Nights

Best Time to Visit

Nainital changes dramatically across seasons. Knowing when to book depends heavily on what you want out of your trip.

• Peak Summer (March to June): Day temperatures stay between 18°C and 24°C. Perfect for escaping northern India's heat waves. Expect high hotel tariffs, busy streets, and long queues at the cable car.
• Monsoon (July to September): Cloudbursts and frequent landslides affect the Kathgodam-Nainital route. However, the hills turn vivid green, waterfalls peak, and room prices plunge by up to 60%.
• Autumn (October to November): Crisp skies, crystal-clear Himalayan views, and moderate cold. This is the sweetest window for trekkers and photography enthusiasts.
• Winter (December to February): Night temperatures drop near 0°C. Snowfall typically occurs between late December and mid-January, especially at higher points like Snow View and Kilbury.

Weather Guide

How to Reach Nainital

By Train (Most Practical)

Take a train to Kathgodam (KGD). Key trains from New Delhi include:

• Kathgodam Shatabdi Express (12040): Departs New Delhi at 06:20 AM, arrives Kathgodam at 11:40 AM.
• Ranikhet Express (15013): Overnight train departing Old Delhi at 10:05 PM, arriving Kathgodam at 05:05 AM.

From Kathgodam station exit:

• Shared Taxis (Bolero/Sumo): ₹150 - ₹200 per seat to Nainital Tallital bus stand.
• Private Taxi: Fixed rate of ₹1,200 - ₹1,500 (1 hour 15 minute drive via NH109).

By Road

Nainital is roughly 300 km from Delhi. Drive route: Delhi → Hapur Bypass → Moradabad Bypass → Rampur → Bilaspur → Pantnagar → Haldwani → Kathgodam → Nainital.

• Road quality is four-lane up to Rampur; the hill climb starts past Kathgodam with around 35 hairpin bends.
• State transport (UTC) AC Volvo buses run nightly from ISBT Anand Vihar, Delhi directly to Nainital (8-9 hours, ₹700 - ₹1,100).

By Air

Nearest operational airport is Pantnagar Airport (PGH), 70 km away, serviced by limited regional flights from Delhi and Dehradun. A private taxi from Pantnagar to Nainital costs ₹2,200 - ₹2,800.

Getting Around the Hill Station

Nainital centers entirely around Naini Lake, which has two ends: Mallital (north/top end) and Tallital (south/bottom end), connected by the 1.5 km long Mall Road.

Pro Tip: Private cars face strict driving restrictions on Mall Road between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM daily. Entry during these peak hours incurs heavy traffic fines unless you hold a hotel parking slip.

Top Things to Do

1. Row across Naini Lake & Visit Naina Devi Temple

Start early at 8:00 AM before the tour groups arrive. Hire a wooden rowboat from the Mallital jetty. Afterwards, step onto the northern shore to visit the ancient Naina Devi Temple, one of the 51 Shakti Peethas.

• Entry: Free
• Timings: 6:00 AM - 10:00 PM

2. Hike up to Tiffin Top (Dorothy's Seat)

Located on Ayarpatta Hill at an altitude of 2,292 meters, Tiffin Top offers a 360-degree view of the town and surrounding Kumaon hills.

• Distance: 4 km uphill walk from Mallital market.
• Alternative: Horse rides are offered from Bara Bazaar (₹700 - ₹900 round trip), but walking the pine-shaded trail is safer and far more pleasant.

3. Take the Aerial Ropeway to Snow View Point

The aerial cable car connects Mallital to Snow View Point (2,270 m). On clear autumn and winter days, you get unobstructed views of Nanda Devi (7,816 m), Trishul, and Nanda Kot peaks.

• Ticket: ₹360 (Adults round trip), ₹260 (Children round trip).
• Timing Note: The cable car ticket gives you strictly 1 hour at the top before you must board the return cabin.

4. Squeeze through the Eco Cave Gardens

Located in Sukhatal, this is a network of six interconnected natural rocky caves named after animals (Tiger Cave, Panther Cave, Porcupine Cave, etc.). You will need to crawl on hands and knees through the narrower crevices.

• Entry Fee: ₹60 (Adults), ₹30 (Children), ₹25 camera fee.
• Best for: Families and active travelers. Skip if you suffer from claustrophobia or severe knee issues.

5. High Altitude Zoo (Pt. G.B. Pant Zoo)

Situated steep above town at 2,100 meters, this clean, high-altitude zoo houses Himalayan Black Bears, Snow Leopards, Tibetan Wolves, and Steppe Eagles.

• Entry Fee: ₹100 (Adults), ₹50 (Kids).
• Shuttle Service: Private cars are not allowed up the narrow zoo road. Take the official green shuttle taxi from Tallital/Mallital stand (₹60 per person round trip).

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Pangot & Kilbury Bird Sanctuary (15 km from town)

While Mall Road stays packed, the road leading up to Pangot winds through thick oak and rhododendron forests. Kilbury is home to over 250 bird species, including the Cheer Pheasant and Koklass Pheasant. Rent a scooter or hire a cab for a quiet afternoon hike through the forest trail.

Land's End Viewpoint

A quiet 3 km trek from Bara Bazaar brings you to a sheer vertical cliff drop overlooking the Khurpatal valley and terraced fields far below. There are no commercial stalls or noisy crowds here—just open wind and drop-offs.

Sariyatal & Himalayan Botanical Garden

Located 10 km down the Kaladungi road, Sariyatal is a small alpine lake feeding into a well-maintained Botanical Garden. It features a butterfly park, a herbarium, and a peaceful library set against mountain slopes.

Packing Checklist

• Layered Clothing: Even in May/June, evenings pull a chill down from the ridges. Carry a light windbreaker or fleece sweater.
• Heavy Woolens (Nov–Feb): Down jacket, thermal inner wear, woolen socks, and gloves.
• Footwear: Sturdy walking shoes with rubber grip. Nainital features steep paved roads that turn slick when damp.
• Medication: Motion sickness pills (Avoine/Domstal) for the 35 km serpentine road from Kathgodam.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Parking on Mall Road
Do not drive your personal car onto Mall Road without checking with your hotel first. Parking on Mall Road is strictly illegal and clamped by local police with ₹2,000+ fines. Park only at designated multi-tier parking grounds at Flatts (Mallital) or Tallital.

Common Mistake: Falling for Unregistered Guides
Touts standing near the Kathgodam road bypass and Tallital bus stop will claim to get you secret discounts on hotels or horse rides. Always deal directly with official hotel desks and registered boat union counters.

Pro Tip: Pre-book Weekend Travel
During May, June, and long holiday weekends, the local administration often halts private vehicles at Haldwani/Kathgodam due to gridlock inside town. Take public Volvo buses or train connections during peak dates to avoid being turned back.

Nearby Attractions
