Introduction: Kashmir's Winter Wonderland
When snow blankets the Pir Panjal range, Kashmir stops being a pastoral summer postcard and transforms into Asia's premier alpine playground. At the epicenter of this transformation is Gulmarg, a natural bowl offering vertical drops, deep dry powder, and some of the highest lift-accessed skiing on the planet. For winter sports enthusiasts, skiing in Kashmir is a bucket-list expedition that combines raw Himalayan topography with rich Kashmiri hospitality.
Yet, executing a seamless ski trip requires more than just buying a plane ticket to Srinagar. From decoding the Gulmarg Gondola ticketing queue to separating high-performance rental gear from worn-out equipment, logistics can make or break your trip. This field-tested guide provides the exact ground intelligence, cost breakdowns, and technical slope breakdowns needed to conquer the powder safely and efficiently in 2026.
Quick Facts & Essential Logistics
Navigating Kashmir in winter demands preparation for cold snaps, mountain road closures, and localized cash requirements. Here are the baseline logistical facts you need before landing at Srinagar's Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport (SXR):
- Primary Airport: Srinagar (SXR), connected via daily direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.
- Road Transit: The 50 km drive from Srinagar to Tangmarg takes 1.5 hours, followed by the mandatory 14 km winding ascent to Gulmarg (subject to chain-control in heavy snow).
- Connectivity: Postpaid SIM cards (Jio and Airtel work best) remain fully functional. Prepaid tourist SIM cards do not work in Jammu & Kashmir.
- Currency & Cash: While major hotels and rental shops accept UPI and credit cards, cash is mandatory for local gear rentals, ski patroller tips, minor village eateries, and pony operators.
- ATMs: Gulmarg has functional ATMs (SBI and J&K Bank), but cash shortages during heavy blizzards are common. Withdraw adequate cash in Srinagar.
Best Time to Ski & Snow Conditions
The winter ski season in Gulmarg spans from late December through early April. However, snow consistency shifts dramatically depending on the winter month you choose.
Pro Tip: If you are chasing deep powder, aim for late January during the height of Chillai Kalan—the 40-day harshest winter period when storms dump meter-plus powder blocks across the upper bowl.
Gulmarg Ski Slopes & Terrain Breakdown
The Gulmarg ski area is divided into distinct zones catering to different skill levels. Understanding these zones prevents beginners from accidentally dropping into unpatrolled backcountry.
- The Baby Slopes (The Basin): Located right at the village level near the gondola base. Gentle gradients, perfect for absolute beginners learning the snowplow technique under certified instructors.
- Kongdoori Phase 1: Reached via the first stage of the Gulmarg Gondola (elevation 2,600m to 3,080m). Offers wide, sweeping intermediate runs with consistent vertical drop and easy access back to the lift.
- Apharwat Peak Phase 2: Reached via the second stage of the gondola (elevation 3,980m to 4,200m). A high-alpine playground featuring massive bowls, steep chutes, and legendary backcountry powder descents.
- The Backcountry (Aparhwat Ridges): Untamed terrain dropping down toward Botapathri or Tangmarg. Crucial Warning: Never venture into the backcountry without an experienced local guide, avalanche beacon, probe, and shovel.

Safety Protocols, Gear & Avalanche Awareness
Apharwat Peak is a high-altitude mountain environment where weather shifts in minutes. Observe these non-negotiable safety rules:
- Avalanche Checks: Always verify the daily avalanche bulletin issued by the Gulmarg Avalanche Control Centre before stepping onto Phase 2.
- Never Ski Alone: Off-piste areas feature tree wells, crevasses, and cornices. Always hire a local ski patroller or certified guide.
- Layering is Critical: Base layer (merino wool), mid-layer (fleece or down), and a waterproof/windproof outer shell. Pack UV-protection ski goggles because high-altitude glare on snow is intense.
- Hydration & Altitude: Kongdoori and Apharwat exceed 3,000 meters. Drink plenty of electrolytes to avoid mild altitude sickness.
