Deep Dive into Snow Activities in Gulmarg
Gulmarg’s winter catalog caters to everyone from hesitant first-timers to extreme backcountry freeriders. Here is how the primary snow pursuits break down:
1. Alpine Skiing & Snowboarding
Gulmarg is globally famous for lift-served and heli-skiing. Phase 1 (Kongdori, 3,096m) features gentle, wide-open beginner slopes serviced by a rope tow and chairlift. This is where certified instructors from the Jammu and Kashmir Department of Tourism and private outfits like Glacier Ski School conduct lessons. Phase 2 (Apharwat Peak, 3,979m) opens up advanced, unpisted bowls, steep ridges, and tree-lined couloirs for experienced riders.2. Sledging & Family Snow Fun
If high-speed alpine skiing isn't your priority, traditional wooden sledges (sledges) pulled by local handlers offer classic winter fun across the lower bowl and Kongdori meadows. It is an affordable way for families and non-skiers to experience the snowfields, though you must negotiate rates strictly based on official tourist board guidelines.3. Snowmobiling & ATVs
For motorized thrills, high-powered snowmobiles operate across designated flat tracks in the main meadow and up toward the LLoyds' ridge trails. These machines allow visitors to cover vast snowy terrain quickly, accompanied by local drivers who handle the technical steering through deep drifts.2026 Winter Activity Cost Matrix
