Sonprayag vs Gaurikund: Where Should You Stay Before Kedarnath?

Introduction

Planning a Kedarnath Yatra brings up one massive logistical headache: Where should you stay the night before your trek? You will invariably land on a choice between Sonprayag and Gaurikund.

Having walked these mountain stretches more times than I can count, I've seen travelers make expensive mistakes here. Sonprayag is the transport hub, while Gaurikund sits right at the starting line of the 19-kilometer trek.

Choosing the wrong one means extra travel fatigue before tackling an intense uphill climb. Let's break down Sonprayag and Gaurikund so you can pick the base that fits your travel style.

Quick Facts About Sonprayag vs Gaurikund

Sonprayag sits at an altitude of 1,829 meters, right at the confluence of the Mandakini and Son Ganga rivers. It is the mandatory checkpoint where all private vehicles must stop.

Gaurikund sits higher up at 1,982 meters, just 5 kilometers past Sonprayag. It is famous for its hot water springs and marks the exact foot of the Kedarnath trekking trail.

Best Time to Visit

The Kedarnath Yatra opens according to Akshaya Tritiya (usually late April or early May) and closes on Bhai Dooj (late October or early November).

May, June, September, and October are peak months. Monsoon months (July and August) bring heavy rains, slippery trails, and high landslide risks along the Sonprayag-Gaurikund road.

Weather Guide

How to Reach Sonprayag and Gaurikund

Most travelers arrive via Rishikesh or Haridwar. You will take NH-107 through Rudraprayag and Agastmuni.

Buses and shared cabs run regularly from Rishikesh to Sonprayag. The journey takes roughly 7 to 8 hours covering about 210 kilometers. Once you reach Sonprayag, your private vehicle goes no further. You must take a government-run or union-operated shared shuttle jeep for the final 5 kilometers to Gaurikund, which costs around ₹50 per person.

Getting Around

Inside Sonprayag, everything is walkable. However, you rely on local jeeps to reach Gaurikund.

In Gaurikund, vehicles are banned on the pedestrian walkway. You navigate entirely on foot. If you cannot trek, pony and palki (palanquin) services are available right from the Gaurikund base station.

Top Things to Do

• Take a holy dip in the thermal springs at Gaurikund.
• Visit the ancient Gauri Temple in Gaurikund.
• Explore the river confluence views at Sonprayag.
• Complete biometric registration at Sonprayag.
• Shop for wooden walking sticks and winter gear in the local markets.

Pro Tip: Complete your mandatory biometric registration online beforehand to skip the massive queues at the Sonprayag registration counter.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Most people rush through these transit towns without stopping. If you arrive early, take the short walk down to the riverbanks near Sonprayag where the Son Ganga meets the Mandakini. It is quieter and offers stunning gorge views.

In Gaurikund, walk behind the main temple complex early in the morning before the crowds wake up. The mist rolling over the valley is unmatched.

Accommodation Guide

Sonprayag offers better hotels with attached bathrooms and running hot water. Properties like Hotel Mandakini and GMVN Tourist Transit Camp provide decent stays.

Gaurikund mostly features budget lodges, ashrams, and basic guesthouses. Rooms can be damp due to the nearby waterfalls and thermal springs.

Where to Eat

Food options are strictly vegetarian across both towns due to religious sentiments.

In Sonprayag, try Hotel Shivalik for simple, hearty North Indian thalis. In Gaurikund, small stalls serve steaming hot maggi, parathas, and ginger tea.

Common Mistake: Eating heavy, oily food right before your trek. Stick to light dal-chawal or porridge to maintain energy on the trail.
