Tungnath vs Kedarnath: Which Trek Is More Difficult?

Introduction

Standing at the base of the Garhwal Himalayas, looking up at a trail winding endlessly into the clouds, the big question hits you: Should I hike to Tungnath or Kedarnath? I have stood at both trailheads, felt the thin air burn my lungs, and listened to fellow trekkers question their life choices. If you are weighing Tungnath vs Kedarnath for your next Himalayan adventure, you need more than generic tourist advice.

Kedarnath is a massive spiritual and physical undertaking—a grueling 16 to 19-kilometer slog up a narrow, mule-churned valley. Tungnath, on the other hand, is shorter at 4 kilometers, but it punches way above its weight with a relentless vertical climb that will test your calves. Let us break down every single detail, from actual trail distances to daily budgets, so you can pick the right trek for your fitness level.

Quick Facts About Tungnath vs Kedarnath

Pro Tip: Don't let Tungnath's short distance fool you. The final kilometer to the summit features uneven stone steps at high altitude, which triggers breathlessness faster than you expect.

Best Time to Visit

Timing your trek in Uttarakhand can make or break your trip. Both shrines close during winter due to heavy snowfall, typically opening in April or May and closing around Diwali in November.

May to June brings clear blue skies, blooming rhododendrons, and manageable daytime temperatures. July to August marks the peak monsoon season; I always advise against trekking here during these months because the routes face severe landslide risks, especially along the Gaurikund-Kedarnath highway. September to October offers crisp air, stunning mountain views, and dwindling crowds.

How to Reach

Both treks start from different base towns in Uttarakhand. To reach Chopta (for Tungnath) or Gaurikund (for Kedarnath), your journey almost always begins in Rishikesh or Haridwar.

From Rishikesh, you can catch a state transport bus or hire a private cab via Devprayag and Rudraprayag. For Kedarnath, drive to Gaurikund via Rudraprayag and Sonprayag (approx. 210 km). For Tungnath, head past Rudraprayag toward Ukhimath and Chopta (approx. 165 km from Rishikesh). The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, roughly 220 km away.

Getting Around

Once you arrive at the base towns, your primary mode of transport is your own two feet. For Kedarnath, options include pony rides, dandi (palanquins), and helicopter services operating from Phata, Guptkashi, and Sirsi. Palki and pony rates are government-regulated, starting around ₹3,000 to ₹7,000 depending on your weight and distance.

For Tungnath, motorized vehicles cannot go past Chopta; you must walk the entire 4 km trail. There are no pony or helicopter options for Tungnath, keeping the trail purely pedestrian and wonderfully peaceful.

Top Things to Do

When tackling Tungnath, the absolute highlight is pushing past the temple for another 1.5 km to reach Chandrashila Peak at 13,000 feet for a 360-degree panorama of Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Chaukhamba peaks. In Kedarnath, attend the evening aarti at the ancient stone temple, surrounded by towering glaciers.

Pro Tip: Wake up at 4:30 AM in Kedarnath to witness the raw morning light hitting the Kedarnath dome, completely devoid of the daytime crowd.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Everyone visits the main shrines, but few explore Deoria Tal near Chopta—a stunning high-altitude lake mirroring Chaukhamba peak, reachable via a short 2.5 km trek from Sari village. Near Kedarnath, if you have an extra day and elite fitness, look into the strenuous trek to Vasuki Tal, sitting at 14,200 feet.

Accommodation Guide

Accommodation near Kedarnath fills up months in advance. Booking via the official GMVN (Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam) portal is your safest bet for clean beds and reliable food.

Where to Eat

Mountain food on these routes is simple, hearty, and vegetarian. Dhabas along the trails serve piping hot Maggi, aloo parathas, dal chawal, and sweet ginger chai.

In Chopta, try the local rajma chawal at Sharma Ji Dhaba. In Kedarnath, stick to freshly cooked, hot meals and avoid heavy or oily foods that exacerbate altitude sickness. Always carry reusable water bottles; water refill stations are available at regular intervals.

Packing Checklist

Do not underestimate Himalayan weather. Even in summer, evenings drop close to freezing.

• Waterproof trekking boots with high ankle support
• Three-layer clothing system (base thermal, fleece jacket, waterproof windbreaker)
• Trekking poles (saves your knees on the descent)
• UV-protection sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen
• Basic first aid kit with Diamox (consult your doctor first)

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Skipping acclimatization. Many travelers drive straight from Haridwar to Chopta or Gaurikund and start trekking immediately, leading to severe headaches and Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Always spend your first night at a lower altitude like Rudraprayag or Guptkashi. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol on the trail, and turn back immediately if you experience persistent dizziness.
