Uttarakhand 10-Day Itinerary: Complete Route for First-Time Travellers

Introduction

Most first-time visitors to Uttarakhand make the mistake of trying to cover too much ground. They bounce from Dehradun to Mussoorie, rush down to Rishikesh, push all the way to Auli, and spend half their vacation sitting in a cab. After leading dozens of trips through the Garhwal and Kumaon regions over the last decade, I've designed a balanced 10-day circuit.

This route hits the highlights without burning you out. You'll experience colonial hill stations, white-water adventure, alpine meadows, and quiet mountain villages. Let's dive right into the details.

Quick Facts About Uttarakhand

• Capital: Dehradun (Winter) / Bhararisain (Summer)
• Official Languages: Hindi, Garhwali, Kumaoni
• Currency: Indian Rupee (INR / ₹)
• Time Zone: IST (UTC+5:30)
• Emergency Helpline: 112 (Police/General), 108 (Ambulance)

Best Time to Visit

Uttarakhand is a year-round destination, but the right time depends entirely on what you want to do. If you want to trek and see clear mountain views, target the shoulder months. If you want snow, winter is your friend.

Pro Tip: Avoid July and August unless you enjoy monsoon landslides and roadblocks. The rivers swell, and mountain driving gets sketchy.

Weather Guide

How to Reach Uttarakhand

Getting to Uttarakhand is straightforward from Delhi.

• By Air: Jolly Grant Airport (DED) in Dehradun is the primary hub. Direct flights run daily from Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. Taxis from DED to Rishikesh cost around ₹1,200 and take about 45 minutes.
• By Train: Haridwar Junction (HW) and Dehradun Terminal (DDN) are the best-connected railway stations. Overnight trains like the Nanda Devi Express from Delhi are reliable and comfortable.
• By Road: Buses operated by UTC and private operators run overnight from Delhi's Kashmiri Gate ISBT to Dehradun, Haridwar, and Rishikesh. Expect a 6 to 7-hour journey.

Getting Around

For a first-timer on a 10-day trip, renting a self-drive car isn't recommended due to aggressive mountain driving habits and narrow roads. Instead, hire a private cab for the entire itinerary or use a mix of shared jeeps and local buses.

A reliable local cab service for 10 days will cost roughly ₹3,500 to ₹4,500 per day, including fuel, driver allowance, and toll taxes.

Top Things to Do: The 10-Day Route

Day 1-2: Rishikesh (The Yoga & Adventure Capital)

Arrive in Dehradun, take a 45-minute cab to Rishikesh. Spend your first day wandering around Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula. Attend the evening Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat. On Day 2, book a white-water rafting trip down the Ganges (₹1,000 to ₹2,500 depending on the stretch length) and try cliff jumping.

Day 3-4: Mussoorie & Dhanaulti

Drive 3 hours north to Mussoorie. Walk the historic Mall Road, take the ropeway to Gun Hill for sunset views, and hike up to Lal Tibba—the highest point in town. On Day 4, escape the Mussoorie crowds by driving an hour further to Dhanaulti for pine forests and peace.

Day 5-6: Chopta & Tungnath

Drive from Dhanaulti to Chopta (roughly 6 hours). Chopta is often called the 'Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand'. On Day 6, wake up early for the 3.5 km trek to Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple in the world, and continue up to Chandrashila peak for a panoramic 360-degree view of Nanda Devi and Chaukhamba peaks.

Day 7-8: Joshimath & Auli

Drive down to Joshimath. Take the Asia’s longest cable car (ropeway) up to Auli (₹1,000 return ticket). Spend Day 8 exploring the meadows of Auli, skiing if you visit in winter, or trekking around artificial Auli Lake.

Day 9-10: Return via Haridwar & Departure

Make the long descent back toward Haridwar. Spend your final evening watching the grand Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri. Head back to Dehradun airport or Haridwar station for your return journey home.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

• Kanatal: A quiet alternative to Mussoorie, surrounded by dense apple orchards and thick deodar forests.
• Sari Village: The base village for Deoria Tal trek. Sleep in a homestay here and watch the reflection of Chaukhamba peaks on the lake at sunrise.
• Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary: If you extend your trip toward Kumaon, Binsar offers zero-light pollution stargazing and quiet oak trails.

Accommodation Guide

Uttarakhand has everything from backpacker hostels to luxury boutique resorts.

• In Rishikesh: Stay at Zostel or Divine Resort near Tapovan.
• In Mussoorie: Rokeby Manor offers old-world British heritage luxury.
• In Chopta: Eco-camps and basic homestays are the standard. Don't expect five-star luxury here; expect incredible starry skies.

Where to Eat (Local Food Guide)

Garhwali and Kumaoni cuisine is hearty, organic, and designed for mountain living.

• Must-Try Dishes: Kafuli (spinach and fenugreek curry), Mandua ki Roti (finger millet flatbread), Chainsoo (black gram dal), and Bal Mithai (a roasted khoya sweet coated in sugar balls).
• Recommended Spots: Chotiwala in Rishikesh for classic thalis, Tavern Restaurant on Mall Road in Mussoorie for wood-fired pizzas, and local dhabas along the Chopta highway for steaming hot chai and maggi.

Budget Breakdown (with INR tables)

Here is what a standard 10-day trip looks like for one person sharing a double room:

Packing Checklist

• Sturdy waterproof trekking shoes with good grip
• Layered clothing: Thermal innerwear, fleece jacket, windproof outer shell
• Daypack (20L-30L) for day hikes
• Reusable water bottle and water purification tablets
• Basic first aid kit with motion sickness and altitude sickness tablets (Diamox after consulting a doctor)
• Power bank and offline Google Maps downloaded

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Packing too many clothes in heavy suitcases instead of backpacks. Mountain hotels often require carrying bags up flights of stairs.

• Always keep cash handy. ATMs in remote areas like Chopta and Joshimath frequently run out of cash or lose power.
• Stay hydrated during treks, but avoid heavy meals right before ascending steep trails like Tungnath.
• Check local weather updates every morning before hitting the road.

Nearby Attractions

• Jim Corbett National Park: Perfect 2-day wildlife extension for tiger safaris if you head back via Ramnagar.
• Kanva Sadhana Ashram: A peaceful historical site near Lansdowne for those wanting to dodge the crowds.
