Uttarakhand in April: Best Places, Weather & Things to Do

Introduction

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve driven up the winding mountain roads of Uttarakhand in April. While most tourists flood the state in May and June to escape the blistering plains, April offers a much quieter, crisp mountain experience. The air still carries a sharp bite at night, but daytime temperatures hover in the comfortable mid-teens to low twenties.

Wildflowers start carpeting the lower alpine meadows, the winter snow retreats to the highest peaks, and local shopkeepers are just dusting off their cafes after the long winter freeze. If you want to experience the Garhwal and Kumaon Himalayas without bumper-to-bumper traffic jams on the Rishikesh-Joshimath highway, April is your window.

Quick Facts About Uttarakhand

Before you pack your bags, let's look at the core details you need to know about traveling through Uttarakhand:

• Capital: Dehradun (Winter) / Bhararisain (Summer)
• Official Languages: Hindi, Garhwali, Kumaoni
• Currency: Indian Rupee (INR / ₹)
• Emergency Helpline: 112 (Police), 108 (Ambulance)
• Major Hubs: Dehradun, Rishikesh, Haldwani, Kathgodam

Best Time to Visit

Uttarakhand is a year-round destination, but April marks the official transition from winter to spring. While December through February brings heavy snowfall (ideal for skiing in Auli), and July to September brings treacherous monsoon landslides, April strikes the ultimate balance.

Pro Tip: If your heart is set on trekking higher trails like Roopkund or Valley of Flowers, wait until June. But for lower-altitude treks, sightseeing, and river rafting, April is unbeatable.

Weather Guide

Here is what you can realistically expect from Uttarakhand's weather across different elevations in April:

How to Reach Uttarakhand

Getting to Uttarakhand depends entirely on your starting point, but Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport (DED) serves as the primary aerial gateway.

• By Air: Jolly Grant Airport connects directly to Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. A taxi from the airport to Rishikesh costs roughly ₹1,200 to ₹1,500.
• By Train: Haridwar Junction and Dehradun Railway Station are well-connected to major Indian cities. The overnight Mussoorie Express from Old Delhi is a classic budget option.
• By Road: Buses run frequently from Delhi's ISBT Kashmiri Gate to Dehradun, Rishikesh, and Haldwani. A Volvo bus ticket costs around ₹600 to ₹1,100.

Getting Around

Navigating mountain roads requires patience. Public buses (often run by UTC) are cheap—a ride from Dehradun to Mussoorie costs under ₹150—but they can be crowded and run on tight, sometimes unpredictable schedules.

For flexibility, hiring a private cab (Dzire or Innova) is your best bet. Expect to pay ₹3,000 to ₹4,500 per day depending on fuel prices and terrain difficulty. Shared jeeps (sumos) ply every major route, charging about ₹200 to ₹400 per seat between towns like Joshimath and Badrinath.

Top Things to Do

• Whitewater Rafting in Rishikesh: April brings ideal water levels and warm sun. A 16 km stretch from Marine Drive to Nim Beach costs around ₹1,000 per person.
• Trek to Tungnath and Chandrashila: The snow clears up enough by mid-April to attempt the highest Shiva temple in the world. Start early from Chopta.
• Wildlife Safari in Jim Corbett: April is prime time for spotting tigers as waterholes dry up, forcing cats into the open. Jeep safaris in the Dhikala or Bijrani zones cost around ₹5,000 to ₹6,500 per jeep.
• Cable Car Ride in Auli: Catch sweeping views of Nanda Devi. The GMVN ropeway costs roughly ₹1,000 for a round trip.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Skip the overcrowded Mall Roads of Nainital and head to Mukteshwar or Binsar instead. Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary offers zero light pollution and panoramic Himalayan views from Zero Point. Entry costs ₹150 per person plus vehicle fees.

Another stunner is Sari Village, the base camp for Deoria Tal. Sitting at 2,438 meters, this high-altitude lake mirrors Chaukhamba peaks. You can camp overnight for about ₹1,500 including meals through local homestays.

Accommodation Guide

From backpacker hostels to heritage colonial bungalows, Uttarakhand has evolved massively.

• Hostels: Zostel and goSTOPS operate in Rishikesh, Mussoorie, and Nainital, charging ₹500 to ₹900 for a dorm bed.
• Mid-Range Hotels: Expect clean rooms with mountain views for ₹2,500 to ₹4,500 per night.
• Luxury/Heritage: Properties like The Savoy in Mussoorie or Taj Corbett Resort start at ₹12,000+ per night.

Where to Eat

Forget continental food when you're in the hills; focus on Garhwali and Kumaoni local flavors. Look for small dhabas serving Aalu ke Gutke (spicy fried potatoes), Kafuli (spinach and fenugreek curry), and Mandwa ki Roti (finger millet flatbread).

• In Rishikesh: Try Freedom Cafe for riverside views or Little Buddha Cafe.
• In Dehradun: Stop by Kalsang for authentic Tibetan momos and thukpa.
• In Nainital: Grab a hot cuppa at Sakley's Restaurant & Pastry Shop.

Budget Breakdown

Here is what a realistic 5-day trip to Uttarakhand in April will cost you per person (excluding flights/trains to the base city):

Packing Checklist

Packing for Uttarakhand in April requires layering because mountain weather shifts rapidly.

• Clothing: T-shirts for daytime, fleece jackets and a heavy windproof jacket for chilly nights.
• Footwear: Sturdy trekking shoes with good grip; break them in before you leave home.
• Gear: Daypack, reusable water bottle, UV-protection sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen.
• Documents: Valid Aadhaar or Passport, printed hotel bookings, and cash (ATMs run dry in remote areas like Chopta).

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Assuming April is warm everywhere. While Rishikesh is hot during the day, Auli and Chopta drop near freezing point after sunset. Bring heavy woolens.

• Mountain Driving: Never drive at night if you aren't experienced with hairpin bends and unlit mountain roads.
• Hydration: Mountain sun is deceptive. Drink plenty of water to avoid altitude sickness during higher altitude drives.
• Cash is King: Do not rely on UPI or credit cards in remote Garhwal villages.

Nearby Attractions

If you have extra days, consider expanding your itinerary:

• Haridwar: Witness the Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri.
• Lansdowne: A quiet, cantonment town free from heavy commercial tourism.
• Kanatal: Perfect for quiet camping and stargazing away from Mussoorie's crowds.
