Uttarakhand in February: Weather, Snowfall & Places to Visit

Introduction

Most people think Uttarakhand shuts down after New Year's Eve. They're wrong. February is actually my favorite month to explore the Garhwal and Kumaon regions. The peak holiday rush is gone, the sky stays crystal clear for jaw-dropping Himalayan views, and high-altitude towns like Auli and Munsiyari are blanketed in fresh powder.

Sure, it’s freezing. You’ll need thermal layers and a thick jacket. But if you want crisp mountain air without dodging tourist buses every two seconds, February is your golden window. Let’s break down what you can actually expect.

Quick Facts About Uttarakhand in February

• Average Temperature Range: -4°C to 15°C depending on altitude.
• Snowfall Probability: High in places above 2,500 meters (Auli, Chopta, Munsiyari).
• Daylight Hours: Roughly 10 hours (sunrise around 6:45 AM, sunset around 5:45 PM).
• Crowd Levels: Low to moderate (except on weekends near Mussoorie and Nainital).
• Road Status: Main highways are clear, but high-mountain passes like Joshimath-Auli ropeway or roads to Chopta may experience temporary closures during heavy snowstorms.

Best Time to Visit

While February as a whole is fantastic, the sweet spot falls between the 5th and the 20th. By late February, lower-altitude areas like Dehradun and Rishikesh start warming up significantly, while higher altitudes see melting snow and slushy trails.

If you're chasing deep powder snow, watch the weather forecasts closely. Plan your trip within 48 hours of a western disturbance passing through the Western Himalayas. That’s when you’ll hit fresh snow without getting stranded by road blockages.

Weather Guide

Uttarakhand’s geography varies wildly, so the weather depends entirely on where you plant your feet. Here is what you'll face across different altitudes:

Pro Tip: Don't rely solely on weather apps for hill stations. They often show Dehradun weather when you're searching for Mussoorie, throwing off your packing plans entirely.

How to Reach Uttarakhand

Getting into the state is straightforward, but the real challenge begins when you head into the hills.

• By Air: Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is your best entry point. It connects daily to Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. From the airport, hire a direct cab to your destination.
• By Train: Haridwar Junction and Dehradun Railway Station are major hubs. Trains like the Shatabdi Express from Delhi get you to Dehradun by lunchtime.
• By Road: Overnight buses run regularly from Delhi’s ISBT Kashmiri Gate to Dehradun, Rishikesh, and Haldwani. Expect a 6 to 8-hour drive depending on traffic.

Getting Around

Public transport in the mountains consists mostly of shared jeeps (called Vikrams or Max cabs) and state roadways buses. They are dirt cheap but run on local schedules, which means patience is required.

If you want flexibility, hire a private cab from Dehradun or Haridwar for the entire trip. Expect to pay around ₹3,000 to ₹4,500 per day for a hatchback or SUV (like a Dzire or Ertiga), fuel and driver allowances included.

Common Mistake: Do not attempt to drive a hatchback up to Auli or Chopta in February unless you have extensive mountain driving experience and snow chains. Rent a local 4x4 or hire a local driver who knows the icy patches.

Top Things to Do

February isn't just about sitting by a heater. Here are the absolute best activities to tick off your list:

• Skiing in Auli: Auli boasts some of the best ski slopes in Asia. Whether you're a complete beginner or an intermediate skier, the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) offers day ski courses and equipment rentals.
• Trekking to Tungnath & Chandrashila: If trails are clear of deep avalanche-prone snow, the trek from Chopta to Tungnath (the highest Shiva temple in the world) offers surreal winter landscapes. Always check local forest department advisories first.
• Wildlife Safari at Jim Corbett: February mornings in Corbett are foggy and crisp. The chances of spotting a Royal Bengal Tiger near water sources are quite high during this month.
• River Rafting in Rishikesh: While the water is freezing, sunny February afternoons make river rafting a thrilling adventure without the scorching summer heat.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Want to escape the crowds in Auli or Mussoorie? Head east to Kumaon or quiet corners of Garhwal:

• Munsiyari: Tucked away in the Pithoragarh district, Munsiyari faces the majestic Panchachuli peaks. In February, it feels like a secluded alpine wonderland.
• Kanatal: Just a two-hour drive past Mussoorie, Kanatal is a quiet pine forest village offering luxury camps and zero tourist hustle.
• Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary: Stay inside the sanctuary at the KMVN TRH Binsar. Wake up to 300 kilometers of snow-capped Himalayan peaks right outside your cottage window.

Accommodation Guide

Where you stay makes or breaks a winter trip in Uttarakhand. Central heating is rare in budget properties, so look for hotels that provide room heaters (often charged at ₹300–₹500 extra per night) and thick electric blankets.

• Budget (₹1,000 - ₹2,000/night): Homestays in Chopta, backpacker hostels in Rishikesh (like Live Free Hostel), and GMVN rest houses.
• Mid-Range (₹2,500 - ₹5,000/night): Alpine resorts in Kanatal, boutique hotels in Nainital, and cozy wooden cottages in Munsiyari.
• Luxury (₹6,000 - ₹15,000+/night): JW Marriott Mussoorie Walnut Grove Resort, The Roseate Ganges in Rishikesh, or Sunderbans-style eco-lodges.

Where to Eat (Local Food Guide)

Mountain food in February is designed to keep you warm and energized. Do not leave Uttarakhand without trying these local delicacies:

• Aloo Ke Gutke: Spiced boiled potatoes tossed in mustard oil, local herbs, and red chilies. Best paired with hot Phaanu or Dal.
• Mandua Ki Roti: Finger millet flatbread served with generous dollops of local white butter (safed makhan). Essential for beating the mountain chill.
• Kafuli: A thick, rich green gravy made from spinach and fenugreek leaves.

Head to Chotiwala in Rishikesh for a classic thali, or try the local roadside dhabas in Joshimath for piping-hot maggi and ginger tea while snowfall swirls around you.

Budget Breakdown

Here is what a realistic 5-day trip to Uttarakhand in February will cost you per person (based on double occupancy):

Packing Checklist

Packing for Uttarakhand in February requires a strategic layering approach. Leave the shorts at home.

• Base Layers: 2-3 sets of thermal tops and bottoms (Merino wool or synthetic fleece).
• Mid Layers: Fleece jackets, heavy woolen sweaters, and a windproof hoodie.
• Outerwear: A heavy down jacket rated for sub-zero temperatures.
• Footwear: Waterproof hiking boots with high traction soles. Pack at least 3 pairs of thick woolen socks.
• Gear: UV-protection sunglasses (snow glare is brutal), sunscreen (SPF 50+), lip balm, and a daypack with a rain cover.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Traveling in the mountains during late winter demands respect for nature. Keep these safety tips in mind:

• Altitude Sickness (AMS): If you drive straight from Rishikesh up to Auli (nearly 3,000m) in one day, you might experience headaches and dizziness. Stay hydrated and take it slow.
• Cash is King: High-altitude towns like Chopta, Sari village, and Munsiyari frequently face power outages, meaning UPI and card machines won't work. Carry at least ₹5,000–₹10,000 in cash.
• Check Road Status: Always ask local hotel owners about road conditions before setting off on morning drives. Landslides or black ice can delay your itinerary by hours.

Nearby Attractions

If you have extra days on your hands, tack these nearby spots onto your Uttarakhand itinerary:

• Haridwar & Rishikesh: Perfect for a spiritual wind-down or adventure sports on your way back to Delhi.
• Rajaji National Park: Located right at the foothills, ideal for a jeep safari if you missed out on Jim Corbett.
• Lansdowne: A quiet, cantonment town in Pauri Garhwal that offers peaceful pine walks away from the tourist crowds.
