Introduction
If you're roasting in the plains of Delhi, Mumbai, or Kolkata this June, Uttarakhand calls your name. After leading dozens of treks and road trips across the Garhwal and Kumaon regions over the last fifteen years, I can tell you that June is a game of two halves. The lower towns like Dehradun and Nainital get quite warm and crowded, but higher altitudes offer crisp alpine air and empty trails.
Most travelers make the mistake of heading straight to Mussoorie or Nainital and getting stuck in three-hour traffic jams on Mall Road. If you want a genuine mountain escape without the family-reunion chaos, you've got to look deeper. Let's break down exactly how to navigate Uttarakhand this June, from the right mountain passes to the best spots for local potato curry and hot chai.
Quick Facts About Uttarakhand in June
- Peak Visitor Season: Yes, June is peak domestic holiday season because schools are out.
- Primary Weather Pattern: Warm sunny days in the lower hills, pleasant evenings in high-altitude zones, and occasional pre-monsoon showers toward the end of the month.
- Main Access Hubs: Dehradun (Jolly Grant Airport), Kathgodam (railway terminus), and New Delhi (road transit).
- Must-Carry Gear: Light woolens for night, sturdy hiking boots, and a reliable windcheater for sudden mountain drizzles.
Best Time to Visit
While this guide focuses strictly on June, it helps to understand where the month sits in the annual cycle. June marks the tail end of summer and the very beginning of the pre-monsoon transition.
By the third week of June, you'll start seeing afternoon cloud cover, especially in higher Garhwal. If you prefer completely clear skies, aim for the first ten days of the month. If you don't mind moody mist and want greener landscapes, the final week offers dramatic photography opportunities.
Weather Guide
Here is what you can actually expect weather-wise across different zones in June:
Pro Tip: Keep an eye on IMD alerts during the last week of June. Pre-monsoon cloudbursts can occasionally cause minor landslides in remote sectors like Pithoragarh or Chamoli.
How to Reach Uttarakhand
Getting into the state depends entirely on whether your destination is in the Kumaon or Garhwal division.
By Air: Jolly Grant Airport (DED) near Dehradun serves the Garhwal region with daily direct flights from Delhi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai. For Kumaon, Pantnagar Airport (PGH) is smaller and handles fewer commercial flights.
By Train: Kathgodam Railway Station is the gateway to Kumaon, sitting about 34 km from Nainital. For Garhwal, Haridwar and Dehradun railway stations connect seamlessly to major Indian cities via overnight trains like the Mussoorie Express.
By Road: Driving from Delhi via the newly expanded Delhi-Dehradun Expressway cuts travel time down to roughly 4.5 hours. Buses operated by UTC (Uttarakhand Transport Corporation) run frequently from Delhi's ISBT Kashmiri Gate.
Getting Around
Public transport in Uttarakhand relies heavily on state roadways buses and shared jeeps (locally called 'Vikrams' or 'Sumos').
If you're traveling with family or want flexibility, renting a self-drive car from Dehradun or hiring a dedicated cab with a local driver is your best bet. Mountain driving requires local expertise—hairpin bends require steady nerves and frequent horn usage.
