Uttarakhand in March: Weather, Festivals & Best Places to Visit

Introduction

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve driven up the winding tarmac of National Highway 7 toward the Garhwal and Kumaon Himalayas. But every time March rolls around, the itch to return gets unbearable. Most travelers make the mistake of visiting Uttarakhand in peak summer or during the freezing depths of January. They miss out entirely on March, which is arguably the most dynamic month of the year in the mountains.

During March, the lower elevations shed their winter gray as wild crimson rhododendrons—locally known as burans—paint entire mountain slopes in brilliant reds and pinks. Higher altitudes like Auli and Chopta still retain patches of glittering snow, offering you the best of both worlds. Whether you're chasing the spiritual energy of Rishikesh or looking for solitude in Munsiyari, this guide breaks down everything you need to know about experiencing Uttarakhand in March.

Quick Facts About Uttarakhand in March

If you are planning your itinerary right now, keep these baseline facts handy. They’ll save you from logistical headaches down the road.

• Daytime Temperatures: Range from 15°C to 24°C in lower regions (Dehradun, Rishikesh) and 5°C to 15°C in hill stations (Nainital, Mussoorie).
• Nighttime Temperatures: Can drop sharply to 0°C to 6°C in higher altitudes like Chopta and Auli.
• Major Festivals: Phool Dei (State harvest festival celebrated on the first day of Chaitra month).
• Road Conditions: Most mountain passes open up by mid-March. Occasional late-winter snow flurries might block high-altitude routes for a few hours.
• Crowd Levels: Low to moderate. You won't deal with the bumper-to-bumper traffic jams that plague Mussoorie and Nainital in May and June.

Pro Tip: If you want to witness the hills blanketed in blooming burans flowers, plan your trip between March 15 and March 30.

Best Time to Visit

While March as a whole is fantastic, the exact window changes your experience dramatically. The first week of March still carries the lingering bite of February. Morning frosts are common in places like Ranikhet and Almora, and you'll definitely need heavy woolens before sunrise.

By the third and fourth week, daytime temperatures climb comfortably into the low twenties. You can comfortably hike in a fleece jacket or even a t-shirt while the sun is out. However, mountain weather is notoriously fickle. An afternoon thunderstorm can drop temperatures by ten degrees in a matter of minutes. Always check local forecasts before setting out on day treks.

Weather Guide (Month-by-Month Table)

To understand why March is the golden window, let’s look at how it compares to the surrounding months in popular hill stations like Mussoorie and Nainital.

How to Reach Uttarakhand

Getting to Uttarakhand is straightforward, thanks to well-maintained highways and rail networks. Your entry point depends entirely on whether you are heading to the Kumaon region (Nainital, Almora) or the Garhwal region (Rishikesh, Dehradun, Auli).

By Air

Jolly Grant Airport (DED) in Dehradun is the primary commercial airport in the state. It connects daily with major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore via IndiGo and Air India. A taxi from Dehradun airport to Rishikesh costs around ₹1,200 to ₹1,500, while a cab to Mussoorie runs about ₹2,000 to ₹2,500.

By Train

Major railheads include Dehradun (DDN), Haridwar (HW), and Kathgodam (KGM). Kathgodam is the gateway to Kumaon, while Dehradun and Haridwar serve Garhwal. Overnight trains like the Kathgodam Express from Delhi are immensely popular and save you a full day of travel.

By Road

Driving from Delhi via the newly expanded Delhi-Dehradun Expressway or NH9 takes about 5 to 7 hours depending on traffic. Volvo and luxury buses operated by UTC and private operators run overnight from Delhi’s ISBT Kashmiri Gate to Dehradun, Haldwani, and Rishikesh for roughly ₹600 to ₹1,200.

Getting Around

Once you are inside Uttarakhand, navigating the terrain requires patience. Public buses (known locally as roadways buses) connect all major towns and cost as little as ₹50 to ₹200 for inter-city hops. However, they run on fixed schedules and get extremely crowded.

For flexibility, hiring a private cab (Dzire or Etios) for a multi-day trip costs between ₹3,000 and ₹4,500 per day, inclusive of driver allowance, fuel, and toll taxes. If you are traveling solo or on a strict budget, shared jeeps (Maxx or Sumo) operate out of major hubs like Haldwani, Rishikesh, and Rudraprayag, charging around ₹200 to ₹500 per seat depending on distance.

Common Mistake: Don't attempt to drive a low-ground-clearance hatchback on offbeat mountain tracks like the road to Sari Village (Chopta). Rent a sturdy SUV or hire a local driver who knows how to navigate hairpin bends and loose gravel.

Top Things to Do

Uttarakhand in March offers a diverse mix of adventure, spirituality, and nature walks. Here are the experiences you shouldn't skip:

1. Trek to Deoria Tal and Chopta

March is prime time for the Chopta-Chandrashila region. While the summit trek to Chandrashila might still have patches of consolidated snow requiring microspikes, the trail to Deoria Tal from Sari Village is a breeze. The emerald waters of Deoria Tal mirror the snow-capped Chaukhamba peaks perfectly on a clear March morning.

2. River Rafting in Rishikesh

By mid-March, the snowmelt makes the Ganga waters crisp and exhilarating. Rishikesh hosts thousands of adventure seekers tackling rapids like 'Roller Coaster' and 'Golf Course'. A standard 16-kilometer rafting stretch from Marine Drive to Nim Beach costs around ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 per person.

3. Experience the Phool Dei Festival

Mark your calendar for the first day of the Hindu month of Chaitra (usually mid-March). Phool Dei is the harvest festival of Uttarakhand. Young children go door-to-door placing freshly plucked flowers and rice grains on the thresholds of homes to bring prosperity. Witnessing this in rural villages near Almora or Tehri is an unforgettable cultural immersion.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

If you want to escape the usual tourist traps, steer clear of Nainital's Mall Road and head to these lesser-known sanctuaries:

• Munsiyari: Tucked away in the Pithoragarh district, Munsiyari offers jaw-dropping views of the Panchachuli mountain range. March brings blooming rhododendrons all along the Darkot village trails.
• Kanatal: Located just off the Chamba-Mussoorie road, Kanatal is a quiet pine-forested hamlet. Stay at Camp O Royale and spend your evenings stargazing without light pollution.
• Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary: Perched atop the Kumaon hills, Binsar features dense oak and rhododendron forests. The Zero Point view at sunrise on a crisp March morning reveals a 300-kilometer panoramic view of Nanda Devi, Kedarnath, and Trishul peaks.

Pro Tip: Book your forest rest house inside Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary at least two months in advance through the Uttarakhand Forest Department portal.

Accommodation Guide

Uttarakhand’s hospitality sector ranges from ultra-luxury heritage properties to rustic homestays run by local families. Here is a breakdown of what you can expect across budget tiers:

Where to Eat (Local Food Guide)

Mountain cuisine in Uttarakhand is rustic, deeply nourishing, and packed with warm spices designed to fight the mountain chill. When you are traveling through the state, look out for these traditional dishes:

• Kachmauli: A traditional Garhwali stuffed bread or mutton preparation depending on the sub-region.
• Kafuli: A thick, rich green gravy made from spinach and fenugreek leaves, cooked in an iron pot and served piping hot with steamed rice.
• Bhang ki Chutney: A tangy, herbaceous condiment made from roasted hemp seeds, mint, and green chilies. It sounds wild, but it's completely legal and adds an incredible punch to local thalis.
• Bal Mithai: If you have a sweet tooth, stop by Almora to buy blocks of this roasted, chocolate-colored khoya fudge coated in white sugar balls.

Must-Visit Eateries:

• Chotiwala Restaurant (Rishikesh): Iconic spot near Swarg Ashram for a wholesome vegetarian thali (approx. ₹300).
• Mohan's Cafe (Mukteshwar): Incredible wood-fired pizzas and local apple cider while overlooking the valley.

Packing Checklist

Packing for March in Uttarakhand requires the art of layering. You might be sweating under the afternoon sun in Rishikesh and freezing by evening in Chopta.

• Clothing: 2 thermal inner sets, 1 fleece jacket, 1 windproof/waterproof jacket, 3 cotton t-shirts, 2 sturdy trekking pants.
• Footwear: 1 pair of waterproof trekking boots with good ankle grip, 2 pairs of woolen socks.
• Gear: Daypack (20L-30L), UV-protection sunglasses, reusable water bottle, flashlight or headlamp.
• Medications: Motion sickness pills (for winding mountain roads), altitude sickness medicine (Diamox, consult a doctor first), personal first-aid kit.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Mountain travel demands respect. Keep these golden rules in mind to ensure a hassle-free journey:

• Altitude Sickness: If you are heading straight to high-altitude spots like Chopta or Auli, spend your first night at a lower elevation to acclimatize properly.
• Road Safety: Never attempt overtaking on blind curves in the hills. Always honk before turning a blind hair-pin bend.
• Cash Availability: ATMs in remote villages like Sari, Munsiyari, or Chopta frequently run out of cash or experience power outages. Always carry at least ₹5,000 in physical cash.

Common Mistake: Relying solely on mobile data. Jio and Airtel work decently in major towns, but BSNL is the only network that holds a signal in deep valleys and high-altitude trekking routes.

Nearby Attractions

If you want to extend your March itinerary, consider crossing over into neighboring districts or states:

• Jim Corbett National Park: Located just a short drive from Ramnagar, March is an exceptional time for safari bookings as animal sightings around waterholes are frequent.
• Haridwar: Just 45 minutes south of Rishikesh. Attend the magnificent evening Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri.
• Rajaji National Park: Perfect for elephant safaris and bird watching before the summer heat sets in.
