Introduction
There is nothing quite like dropping down a gear, leaning into a sweeping hairpin turn above the Alaknanda River, and smelling pine sap mixed with engine oil. I have ridden my Royal Enfield Classic 500 across most of India, but Uttarakhand's roads demand a special kind of respect. The state splits neatly into two distinct riding zones: the rugged, spiritually charged Garhwal region and the pine-scented, lake-dotted Kumaon region.
Whether you are chasing the high-altitude tarmac of Chopta or the mist-shrouded switchbacks of Munsiyari, a bike trip here tests your machinery and your grit. Forget the sanitized tour bus experience. On a motorcycle, you smell every dhaba woodfire, feel every sudden temperature drop, and interact with locals in remote mountain hamlets who are genuinely curious about your battered saddlebags. Let us map out the ultimate two-wheeled journey through the Land of the Gods.
Quick Facts About Uttarakhand Road Trip by Bike
- Primary Riding Regions: Garhwal (Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag) and Kumaon (Nainital, Almora, Pithoragarh).
- Average Distance Covered: 1,200 to 1,800 kilometers depending on the circuit.
- Recommended Engine Capacity: 150cc and above (350cc+ is ideal for high passes).
- Permits Required: Inner Line Permits are needed if you ride close to the Tibet border in parts of Pithoragarh and Chamoli.
Best Time to Visit
Timing your ride is everything in the Himalayas. Monsoons bring terrifying landslides that can strand you for days, while peak winters freeze over high-altitude stretches like Mana or Kedarnath.
Your sweet spots are the shoulder months. April to June brings blooming rhododendrons and clear mountain passes, while September to November offers crisp, post-monsoon visibility where snow-capped peaks pop against deep blue skies.
Weather Guide (Month-by-Month Table)
Pro Tip: If you ride in October, pack thermal innerwear. The sun is warm during the day, but mountain winds drop temperatures drastically the moment you cross 2,500 meters.
How to Reach Uttarakhand Road Trip by Bike
Most riders coming from Delhi, Punjab, or Haryana start their journey directly from Delhi NCR via NH334 through Meerut and Roorkee, bypassing Haridwar to avoid heavy pilgrimage traffic.
If you are flying in from South or West India, ship your motorcycle via train cargo to Dehradun or hire a reliable machine from rental hubs in Rishikesh. Rishikesh has dozens of rental operators offering Royal Enfields, KTMs, and Xpulses starting at ₹800 to ₹1,500 per day.
Getting Around
The classic Garhwal circuit covers Rishikesh - Devprayag - Srinagar - Rudraprayag - Chopta - Joshimath - Auli - Rishikesh. This loop takes about 6 to 8 days.
For a Kumaon loop, tackle Kathgodam - Nainital - Kausani - Almora - Munsiyari - Chaukori - Kathgodam. The roads here are slightly narrower but feature less heavy vehicle traffic compared to the Char Dham pilgrimage routes.
Top Things to Do
- Conquer the Chopta-Tungnath Pass: Ride up to Chopta, the Switzerland of Uttarakhand, and trek 3.5 kilometers to Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple in the world.
- Chase Sunsets at Kausani: Watch the golden hour illuminate the 300-kilometer panoramic Himalayan snowline from Gandhi Ashrama.
- Take the Badrinath Highway Switchbacks: Test your cornering skills on the famous Joshimath-to-Badrinath stretch, where the road cuts vertically into sheer rock faces.
Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path
Skip the tourist crowds at Nainital and head straight to Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary. You have to pay a small entry fee at the gate, but riding through dense oak and rhododendron forests with zero honking cars is therapeutic.
Another absolute gem is Kalap, a remote village in the Upper Supin Valley where time has stood still. You will need to park your heavy bike and walk the last couple of kilometers, but the raw mountain culture you experience is unmatched.

If you are passing through Tehri, try authentic Garhwali Kafuli (spinach and fenugreek curry) at local eateries. For a caffeine fix, small tea stalls serve ginger chai brewed with buffalo milk that will instantly warm your core.

- Documentation: Original RC, valid insurance, pollution certificate, driving license, multiple photocopies.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes
Common Mistake: Riding after sunset in the mountains. Mountain roads have unlit hairpin bends, stray cattle, and sudden rockfalls. Always park your bike by 5:00 PM.
Another mistake is neglecting hydration. High altitude air is dry, and wind blast dehydrates you faster than you realize. Sip water constantly from a hydration pack.
Pro Tip: Always check your brake pads before descending from high passes like Joshimath or Pithoragarh. Engine braking saves your pads, but steep descents will glaze them if you ride the rear brake.
Nearby Attractions
If you have extra days, extend your loop into Himachal Pradesh via the Chakrata-Nahan route, or head towards the border town of Mana, the last inhabited village before the Indo-China border.

How much does a 7-day bike trip to Uttarakhand cost?
A budget road trip costs around ₹10,000 to ₹12,000 including fuel, dhaba food, and basic homestays. Mid-range trips with better hotels average ₹22,000 to ₹25,000.
