Introduction
I get asked this all the time: 'Can I really backpack through Uttarakhand without renting a car or hiring a private cab?' The short answer is an absolute yes. During my last three months traversing Garhwal and Kumaon, I relied entirely on state buses, crowded shared sumos, and local trains.
Sure, having your own vehicle gives you flexibility, but it also means dealing with harrowing mountain parking, massive fuel bills, and driving fatigue on hairpin bends. Public transit in Uttarakhand connects almost every major valley, pilgrimage site, and trekking basecamp. You just need to know the schedules and unwritten rules of hill travel.
Let’s dive into the ultimate transit blueprint for ditching the car keys and letting local drivers navigate the cliffs.
Quick Facts About Uttarakhand Transport
- Primary State Transport: Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (UTC) and Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) buses.
- Mountain Lifeline: Mahindra Bolero and Tata Sumo shared jeeps operating from major chowks.
- Major Railheads: Dehradun, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Kathgodam, and Tanakpur.
- Average Shared Jeep Fare: ₹50 to ₹350 per seat depending on distance.
- Primary App for Trains: IRCTC Rail Connect.
Best Time to Visit
If you're traveling without a car, timing your trip is crucial because public transport frequency drops drastically during heavy monsoon landslides or winter snowstorms.
March to June offers clear skies and fully operational bus routes to high-altitude spots. September to November brings post-monsoon greenery and crisp mountain views without peak summer crowds.

How to Reach Uttarakhand
Reaching the state without a car is remarkably easy thanks to a robust railway network connecting major Indian cities to the Himalayan foothills.
For the Garhwal region, book your train to Dehradun (DDN) or Haridwar (HW). If you are heading towards Kumaon (Nainital, Almora, Munsiyari), your terminus will be Kathgodam (KGM), located just 35 km from Haldwani.
Pro Tip: Trains from Delhi to Kathgodam like the Ranikhet Express or Shatabdi fill up weeks in advance. Book your railway tickets exactly 120 days prior through IRCTC.
Getting Around
This is the core of your car-free journey. Uttarakhand’s public transit network operates like a well-oiled, albeit noisy, machine.
1. State & Private Buses
UTC runs regular buses from ISBT Kashmere Gate in Delhi directly to Rishikesh, Dehradun, Haldwani, and Srinagar (Garhwal). Once inside the state, local bus stations (locally called 'Adda') send out early morning buses to remote hamlets.2. Shared Jeeps (Sumos and Boleros)
Ask any local how to get somewhere, and they’ll point you toward the nearest shared jeep stand. These vehicles seat 10 people and only leave when full. Fares are fixed by the union, so you won't get ripped off if you ask locals for the standard rate.3. Auto-Rickshaws and E-Rickshaws
In flat valley towns like Dehradun, Haldwani, Rishikesh, and Haridwar, e-rickshaws dominate local commutes for ₹10 to ₹30 per person.Top Things to Do
Exploring Uttarakhand without a car doesn't mean compromising on experiences. In fact, slow travel lets you interact more deeply with mountain communities.
- Trek to Chopta & Tungnath: Take a shared jeep from Rishikesh to Kund, then another to Chopta. From there, hike to the highest Shiva temple in the world.
- Stroll the Mall Road in Mussoorie: Hop on a ₹40 shared cab from Dehradun railway station directly to Library Chowk.
- Explore Almora's Culture: Take a 2-hour UTC bus from Kathgodam to Almora and walk through the historic cobblestone bazaars.
Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path
- Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary: Take a bus from Almora to Ayarpani gate, then enjoy a stunning 7 km canopy walk into the sanctuary.
- Patal Bhuvaneshwar: Accessible via shared jeeps from Pithoragarh or Berinag, this subterranean limestone cave temple complex is otherworldly.
Accommodation Guide
When traveling by bus, location is everything. You want to stay within walking distance of the local bus stand or taxi union chowk.
Where to Eat
Mountain food warms the soul after a bumpy bus ride. Skip the multi-cuisine cafes and hit local dhabas.
- Pangat Restaurant (Nainital): Famous for Kumaoni thalis.
- Chotiwala (Rishikesh): An iconic landmark for pure vegetarian North Indian thalis.
- Local Dhabas at Jeep Stands: Try Chainsoo (black gram dal) and Madua ki Roti (finger millet flatbread) for under ₹150.
