Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib: Can You Visit Both in One Trip?

Introduction

Short answer: Yes, absolutely. In fact, most travelers who visit one end up doing both because they share the exact same base village: Ghangaria. If you are standing at Govindghat ready to climb up into the Garhwal Himalayas, you do not have to choose between a UNESCO World Heritage alpine floral wonderland and the highest Sikh gurudwara in the world.

Over my last three trips up this trail, I have watched travelers waste time trying to plan them as separate adventures. That is a logistical nightmare. You set up your base camp once, lace up your boots, and branch left for the valley or right for the glacial lake. Let me walk you through exactly how to pull this off without burning out your knees.

Quick Facts About Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib

Before we look at itineraries, let us lay out the ground realities of this dual expedition. These two trails diverge at Ghangaria, meaning you sleep in the same bed for both hikes.

Pro Tip: Register for your Hemkund Sahib Yatra online via the official Uttarakhand Tourism portal before leaving Joshimath to skip massive queue lines at Govindghat.

Best Time to Visit

Timing is everything here. The Valley of Flowers stays blanketed in snow for most of the year, opening strictly from June 1st to October 31st. However, if you want to see the flowers in full bloom, your window narrows significantly.

July and August are prime monsoon months. While the valley bursts into vibrant shades of blue poppy, cobra lily, and marsh marigold, the trails get slick. September offers clearer skies and lingering blooms, but the flowers start fading toward the end of the month.

Weather Guide

Here is what you can expect month-by-month on the trail:

How to Reach

Your journey starts from Rishikesh or Dehradun, the primary transit hubs in Uttarakhand. From there, you will take National Highway 7 toward Joshimath.

• Fly or Train to Dehradun/Rishikesh: Jolly Grant Airport (DED) is the closest airport. Rishikesh Railway Station is the main railhead.
• Rishikesh to Govindghat: Hire a shared taxi or take a Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) bus to Govindghat. This 290 km drive takes roughly 10 to 11 hours along the Alaknanda River.
• Govindghat to Pulna: Drive 4 km further to Pulna village. Private vehicles are not allowed past this point. Your actual trek begins here.

Getting Around

From Pulna village, you have three ways to cover the 11 km stretch to Ghangaria:

• Trekking: The most rewarding option. Follows a well-paved stone path alongside the Pushpavati River.
• Pony or Mule: Available for hire at Pulna. Rates are fixed by the local union (roughly ₹2,500 to ₹3,000 one way).
• Helicopter: Operated by Pinnacle Air or Aryan Aviation from Govindghat helipad to Ghangaria. Cost is approximately ₹3,500 one way per person (subject to weather).

Top Things to Do

Splitting your days efficiently allows you to experience both destinations without rushing.

• Day 1: Drive from Rishikesh/Joshimath to Govindghat, trek from Pulna to Ghangaria.
• Day 2: Trek to the Valley of Flowers. Spend 4 hours exploring the inner trail up to the grave of Margaret Legge, then hike back.
• Day 3: Tackle the steep, relentless switchbacks up to Hemkund Sahib. Take a dip in the freezing glacial lake and grab hot khichdi langar at the gurudwara.
• Day 4: Trek back down from Ghangaria to Pulna and catch transport to Joshimath.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Most tourists turn back at the designated wooden bridge inside the Valley of Flowers. If you have valid permit permissions and good stamina, continue further up along the rocky moraines where blue poppies grow in dense, undisturbed clusters away from the day-trippers.

Similarly, on your way down from Hemkund Sahib, pause at the smaller alpine meadows just below Lachhpal. You will often spot Himalayan monal pheasants foraging in the early morning mist.

Accommodation Guide

Ghangaria is a remote hamlet with basic infrastructure. Do not expect luxury resorts here.

• GMVN Tourist Rest House: The most reliable government-run property. Clean dorms and simple rooms. Book months in advance.
• Hotel Kuber / Hotel Dev Lok: Decent private lodges offering attached bathrooms and geysers (though power cuts are frequent).
• Gurudwara Sahib Ghangaria: Provides free dormitory beds (Hall/Serai) and blankets to all pilgrims regardless of faith, though a small donation is appreciated.

Where to Eat

Eating on the trek is straightforward and comforting. You will find small family-run dhabas lining the main street of Ghangaria.

• Gurudwara Langar: The ultimate spot for free, piping-hot dal, rice, and chai. Open to all travelers.
• Himalayan Cafe: Known for serving fresh parathas and ginger lemon honey tea, which is a lifesaver for altitude sickness.
• New Sharma Restaurant: Great place to grab a quick plate of Maggi and boiled eggs before hitting the trail at 6 AM.

Budget Breakdown

Here is what a standard 4-day solo trip from Rishikesh will actually cost you in Indian Rupees (INR):

Packing Checklist

Do not pack heavy. Every extra kilo feels like five when you are climbing past 3,500 meters.

• Waterproof trekking boots with solid ankle grip
• Rain jacket and waterproof backpack cover (essential for monsoon months)
• Trekking poles to save your knees on the descent from Hemkund Sahib
• Thermal innerwear and a down jacket for chilly nights
• Reusable water bottle and water purification tablets
• Basic first aid kit containing Diamox (for altitude), band-aids, and ORS

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Skipping acclimatization. Do not try to hike straight from Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib on day one. Spend a night in Ghangaria to let your lungs adjust to the thin air.

• Stay hydrated: Drink at least 3 to 4 liters of water daily.
• Respect the rules: Camping is strictly prohibited inside the Valley of Flowers. You must exit the valley before 5 PM.
• Watch the weather: Mountain weather changes instantly. Always carry rain gear even if it looks sunny at 7 AM.

Nearby Attractions

If you have an extra day or two to spare, tack these onto your itinerary:

• Badrinath Temple: Located just 25 km from Govindghat. One of the Char Dhams.
• Mana Village: The last inhabited Indian village before the Tibet border, famous for Vyas Gufa and Saraswati river origin.
• Auli: A premier ski resort destination just above Joshimath, accessible via one of Asia's longest ropeways.
