Where Should You Stay During the Kedarnath Yatra? The Ultimate Stays Guide

Introduction

Figuring out where to stay during the Kedarnath Yatra can make or break your pilgrimage. When I first planned my trip up to Lord Shiva's abode at 3,583 meters, I made the classic mistake of booking just one hotel in Rudraprayag and hoping to do the whole trek and back in a day. Big mistake. The yatra is a grueling, beautiful 16-kilometer trek from Gaurikund, and breaking your journey across different base towns is essential.

From government-run GMVN camps to luxury geodesic domes in Guptkashi, your stay options vary drastically depending on your budget, stamina, and altitude tolerance. Let's break down exactly where you should book your beds for a seamless, soul-stirring journey.

Quick Facts About Kedarnath Yatra Stays

• Route Span: Rishikesh to Kedarnath Base (approx. 225 km by road + 16 km trek)
• Key Stays Hubs: Guptkashi, Phata, Sonprayag, Gaurikund, and Kedarnath Town
• Primary Booking Portals: Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) official portal, local guesthouse walk-ins, and curated travel operators like TripDM.
• Altitude Range: 610 meters (Rishikesh) to 3,583 meters (Kedarnath)

Pro Tip: Never show up in peak season without pre-booking your stay at Kedarnath town itself. Tents sell out months in advance.

Best Time to Visit

The Kedarnath shrine opens annually on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya (usually April-May) and closes on Bhai Dooj (November).

May to June brings clear skies, but immense crowds. July to August brings heavy monsoon rains and landslide risks. September to October offers crystal clear Himalayan views and fewer crowds, though temperatures drop sharply near freezing at night.

Weather Guide

How to Reach Kedarnath

Most travelers fly into Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun or take a train to Haridwar/Rishikesh. From there, you hire a cab or board state transport buses heading up the Alaknanda and Mandakini river valleys via Devprayag and Rudraprayag.

You will drive up to Sonprayag or Gaurikund, which is where vehicular roads end. From Gaurikund, the actual 16-km trek to Kedarnath begins.

Getting Around

Once you reach the mountain hubs, getting around is primarily done on foot, via pony (khachchar), dandi (palanquin), pithu (porters), or by Pawan Hans and Aryan Aviation helicopters operating from helipads in Guptkashi, Phata, and Sirsi.

Top Things to Do

• Attend the evening Maha Aarti at the Kedarnath Temple.
• Take a holy dip at the Chorabari Tal (Gandhi Sarovar) trek if weather permits.
• Pay respects at Bhairavnath Temple perched on the cliff overlooking the valley.
• Soak in the hot springs at Gaurikund before starting your descent.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Instead of staying right in bustling Sonprayag, book your night in Triyuginarayan—the legendary village where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married. It's just 12 km from Sonprayag, features the eternal flame temple, and offers peaceful homestays away from the highway chaos.

Accommodation Guide

Your yatra stay is divided into three distinct zones:

1. The Transit Hubs: Guptkashi, Phata, and Sitapur

These towns are located 1 to 2 hours before Sonprayag. They offer the best hotels, luxury tented camps, and proper amenities with reliable hot water and Wi-Fi. Recommended: Kedar Valley Resort (Guptkashi) or GMVN Tourist Rest House (Phata).

2. The Trek Base: Sonprayag and Gaurikund

Very basic lodges, guesthouses, and dharamshalas. Best for travelers who want to start the trek at 4:00 AM sharp. Do not expect luxury here; rooms are functional, clean enough, and built for a quick night's sleep.

3. Kedarnath Town (The Shrine Base)

Located right behind the temple complex. You can choose between GMVN prefabricated huts, private tented colonies with attached/common toilets, and dharamshalas run by trusts.

Pro Tip: GMVN tents in Kedarnath are weather-proof and anchored securely against high winds, making them much safer than cheap private tents.

Where to Eat

Food along the yatra is strictly vegetarian (and mostly garlic/onion-free in traditional dhabas near the temple).

• In Guptkashi: Try local Garhwali dishes like Kafuli and Mandua ki Roti at local dhabas near the main market.
• On the Trek Route (Bhimbali, Lincholi): Stop at community-run langars and small tea stalls for hot maggi, glucose biscuits, and piping hot ginger tea (adrak chai).
• In Kedarnath Town: Government-run cafeterias and private mess tents provide simple, wholesome thalis to keep your energy up.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Booking a hotel in Kedarnath town without checking if registration for the yatra is already secured. You cannot enter the zone without a biometric yatra pass.

• Stay hydrated, but avoid alcohol and smoking entirely during the trek.

Nearby Attractions
