1. Introduction: The Real Appeal of Zero Point
Perched high near the iconic Zojila Pass on the Ladakh border, Zero Point Sonamarg is where mainstream tourism ends and raw, high-altitude wilderness begins. Travelers often confuse it with Thajwass Glacier, but Zero Point is an entirely different beast. Located roughly 30 kilometers past Sonamarg town, it sits at a staggering elevation where snow patches linger even in the height of summer.
The draw here isn't luxury resorts or manicured gardens. It's the thrill of standing surrounded by jagged snow-capped Himalayan peaks, breathing thin mountain air, and watching local sledges glide across melting glaciers. Because it sits on a strategically sensitive military corridor, the journey requires dealing with local union cab monopolies, sudden weather shifts, and strict movement windows. This guide cuts through the tourist hearsay to give you field-tested facts for your 2026 journey.
2. Quick Facts & Essential Logistics
Before heading toward Zojila Pass, you need to lock down your logistics. Sonamarg town acts as your basecamp, located about 80 kilometers northeast of Srinagar.
- Elevation: ~11,500 feet (3,505 meters) above sea level.
- Distance from Sonamarg Town: 28 km to 32 km depending on the exact pass clearance.
- SIM Connectivity: Postpaid J&K, Airtel, and Jio connections work in Sonamarg town. Beyond Gagangir, mobile signals drop completely. Offline maps are non-negotiable.
- Cash & ATMs: Only a couple of working ATMs exist in Sonamarg town (J&K Bank), and they frequently run out of cash during peak season. Carry at least INR 5,000–8,000 in physical cash per person.
- Fuel Station: The last reliable fuel pump is in Gund or Kangan before entering Sonamarg. Fill your tank completely.
3. Best Time to Visit & Seasonal Access Table
Zero Point is entirely weather-dependent. Heavy winter snowfalls routinely block Zojila Pass from November through April, cutting off vehicular access.
4. Categorized Destinations & En Route Stops
Your journey to Zero Point isn't just about the final destination. The drive itself cuts through some of Kashmir's most dramatic topography.
Category A: Accessible En Route Stops
- Kangan & Gagangir: The transition zone where the Sindh River roars alongside the highway. Stop here for early morning breakfast and tea.
- Sonamarg Meadow (The Meadow of Gold): The primary valley floor where horses graze and river rafting points operate.
- Shutkadi Village: The official boarding point for union cabs heading toward Zojila and Zero Point.
Category B: High-Altitude Attractions
- Zojila War Memorial: A poignant tribute to Indian soldiers who fought in the 1948 Indo-Pak war, located just miles before the pass summit.
- Zero Point (Zojila Summit Area): The high-altitude snow playground where you can rent gumboots, drink kahwa from roadside shacks, and slide down snow slopes.
5. Practical 3-Day Sonamarg & Zero Point Itinerary
To prevent altitude sickness and make the most of your time, avoid rushing up and down in a single day from Srinagar. Use this balanced 3-day circuit.
- Day 1: Srinagar to Sonamarg Arrival & Acclimatization

6. Permits, Checkposts & Union Cab Rules
Navigating local transportation rules is the trickiest part of visiting Zero Point.
- The Union Cab Monopoly: Outside tourist taxis (from Srinagar, Pahalgam, or Gulmarg) are strictly prohibited from driving beyond Shutkadi union stand in Sonamarg. You must hire a local Sonamarg union vehicle (Scorpio, Xylo, or Sumo) for the trip to Zero Point.
- Union Cab Pricing (2026 Standard Rates): Expect to pay between INR 4,500 to INR 6,000 for a return trip from Sonamarg to Zero Point, depending on the season and vehicle type.
- Checkposts: Indian Army and Jammu & Kashmir Police maintain strict checkposts at Gagangir and near the Zojila approach. Carry physical government-issued ID cards (Aadhaar, Passport, or Voter ID) for all passengers.
7. Where to Stay: Accommodation Guide
Sonamarg offers options ranging from budget alpine lodges to luxury tented camps. Staying overnight is vital for proper acclimatization.
8. Local Food & Authentic Dining Culture
High-altitude eating in Sonamarg revolves around high-calorie comfort foods and warming Kashmiri teas.
- Kahwa Culture: Traditional green cardamom, saffron, and almond tea served piping hot in roadside shacks at Zero Point. It's your best defense against the biting mountain wind.
- Maggi & Momos: The ubiquitous high-altitude snack. Eating hot Maggi at 11,500 feet tastes remarkably better than anywhere else.
- Local Dhabas in Sonamarg Market: Try authentic Rajma Chawal, local trout fish fry from the Sindh River, and freshly baked Kulcha with noon chai.

- Adventure Travelers & Couples: Perfect spot for dramatic landscape photography, offbeat road trips, and alpine exploration.
11. Packing Checklist & Mountain Safety Tips
- Layering System: Base thermal layer, fleece mid-layer, and a windproof/waterproof outer jacket. Weather at Zojila changes in minutes.
- Footwear: Waterproof trekking boots. Do not wear sneakers; slush and mud will ruin them instantly.
- Sun Protection: High-altitude UV rays are severe. Pack high-SPF sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, and lip balm.
- Hydration: Drink at least 3 liters of water daily to combat altitude sickness.
12. Responsible Travel & Local Etiquette
- No Plastic Waste: Zero Point is an ecologically fragile alpine zone. Pack back every wrapper, water bottle, and packet you bring.
- Respect Military Authority: Zojila Pass is a sensitive border defense zone. Do not photograph army checkpoints, bunkers, or troop movements.
- Support Local Union Drivers: Negotiate fares respectfully at the taxi stand. These drivers risk harsh terrain daily to keep supply lines and tourism running.
