Auli Travel Guide: Best Time, Snowfall, Skiing, Cost & How to Reach

Introduction

If you want real powder snow without buying an international flight to Switzerland, Auli is your best shot in India. Sitting in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand at an elevation of 2,800 to 3,050 meters, this high-altitude station looks straight out at Nanda Devi (7,816m), India's second-highest peak.

I have covered Uttarakhand's terrain for over a decade. Auli is spectacular, but planning a trip here can turn into a logistical headache if you don't understand mountain road timings, cable car schedules, and seasonal weather shifts.

This guide breaks down everything you need to know to execute a smooth trip: exact transport routes, hotel options across budgets, ski instructor rates, and realistic costs.

Quick Facts About Auli

• Elevation: 2,800 m to 3,050 m (9,186 ft to 10,010 ft)
• District: Chamoli, Uttarakhand
• Nearest Airport: Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (270 km)
• Nearest Major Railway Station: Rishikesh (250 km) / Haridwar (275 km)
• Base Town: Joshimath (16 km by road, 4 km by cable car)
• Iconic Peaks Visible: Nanda Devi, Kamet, Dunagiri, Mana Parvat, Hathi Parbat

Best Time to Visit

Your timing depends entirely on whether you want white ski slopes or clear alpine meadows.

For Snowfall and Skiing (January to March)

If soft powder snow is your priority, visit between mid-January and late February. Temperatures drop below freezing, and the GMVN ski slopes are fully operational. Snow usually stays intact until mid-March, though late March gets slushy.

For Clear Views and Pleasant Weather (April to June)

Summers bring clear blue skies and daytime temperatures around 15°C to 20°C. Peak visibility for the Nanda Devi range happens in early summer. It is an ideal time for day hikes like the Gorson Bugyal trail.

Monsoon Warning (July to September)

Avoid travelling to Auli during monsoon. The NH-7 highway between Rishikesh and Joshimath experiences heavy landslides around Sirobagarh and Chamoli. Roadblocks can strand you for 12 to 24 hours.

Autumn Magic (October to December)

October offers razor-sharp Himalayan views with crisp daylight air. First snowfall typically arrives by mid-December, though heavy accumulation usually holds off until January.

Pro Tip: If you want fresh snow without massive New Year crowd markups, book your visit between January 10 and January 25.

How to Reach Auli

Reaching Auli requires a two-stage route. You first reach Joshimath, the base town, and then head up to Auli via cable car or road.

Step 1: Reaching Joshimath

• By Air: Fly to Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (DED). Hire a private cab outside the terminal straight to Joshimath (270 km, 8 to 10 hours). Expect to pay ₹6,500 - ₹9,000 for a Sedan or SUV one-way.
• By Train: Take an overnight train to Rishikesh (Yog Nagari Rishikesh - YNRK) or Haridwar (HW). From the Rishikesh bus stand, public UKSRTC buses and shared Maxx taxis leave between 4:00 AM and 7:00 AM for Joshimath. Shared cab fare is around ₹600 - ₹800 per seat.
• By Road: Drivers coming from Delhi should take the Delhi-Haridwar Highway, continuing via Rishikesh, Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, and Chamoli to Joshimath (approx. 490 km, 14–15 hours driving time).

Step 2: Joshimath to Auli

Once in Joshimath, you have two transport options to reach the upper slopes of Auli:

• The Joshimath-Auli Ropeway (Recommended): A 4.1 km cable car system rising from Joshimath (1,800m) to Auli Chair Lift Station (3,010m). The trip takes 25 minutes. Round-trip tickets cost ₹1,000 per person. It offers panoramic views of Nanda Devi.
• By Road: A 16 km narrow mountain road connects Joshimath to Auli. Taxis charge ₹1,000 - ₹1,500 one way. During winter snow, ordinary sedans cannot drive this stretch without snow chains (chain taxis charge ₹2,000 - ₹3,000).

Pro Tip: The last cable car car leaves Joshimath around 4:00 PM in winter. If you arrive late in Joshimath, stay overnight there instead of risking a dark drive up slippery snow roads.

Getting Around

Auli has no traditional inner-city transport. You get around on foot or using ski lifts.

• Chair Lift: Runs from Tower 8 to the artificial lake area. It costs ₹500 per person round trip and saves you an uphill trudge in heavy ski boots.
• Walking/Trekking: Most resorts, food joints, and view points sit along a single main trail. Snow boots with rubber grips are necessary from December to March.

Top Things to Do

1. Take Skiing Lessons on GMVN Slopes

GMVN (Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam) offers structured 7-day and 14-day basic skiing courses. If you are visiting for a shorter trip, hire a local ski instructor certified by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports.

• Daily Instructor Fee: ₹1,500 - ₹2,500 per day (includes boots, ski poles, and skis).
• Best Location: Slope No. 1 and Slope No. 2 near the GMVN Ski Resort.

2. Ride the 4 km Joshimath Cable Car

This is one of Asia's longest ropeways. It glides directly over dense oak and pine forests, offering unbroken vistas of Nanda Devi, Mana Parvat, and Doonagiri.

3. Hike up to Gorson Bugyal

A 3 km trek from Auli's artificial lake brings you to Gorson Bugyal (3,056m), a massive alpine meadow. In winter, it turns into an undulating snowfield; in summer, it offers lush green grazing lands.

4. Visit the Auli Artificial Lake

Built by the government to feed snow guns during light winters, this high-altitude lake mirrors the surrounding peaks. It is one of the most photographed spots on the upper slopes.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

• Kwani Bugyal: Located 12 km beyond Auli via Gorson, Kwani Bugyal sits at 3,380 meters. It is a quiet meadow camp away from tourist crowds, offering direct, unobstructed views of Dunagiri mountain.
• Chenab Lake: A small, untouched natural lake near Dang village. Access requires a rough 28 km dirt track drive from Joshimath followed by a short downhill walk. You will likely have the place entirely to yourself.
• Parsari Village: A peaceful Garhwali village located halfway along the Joshimath-Auli road. Stop here to see traditional stone-and-timber mountain houses and sample homemade Bhang ki Chutney.

Budget Breakdown

Here is what you should expect to spend per day, based on your travel style.

Packing Checklist

Winter conditions in Auli require technical layers. Don't rely on basic casual cotton jackets.

Essential Winter Gear (Dec to Mar)

• [ ] Thermal Base Layers: At least 2 pairs of synthetic or merino wool thermals.
• [ ] Mid-layer Fleeces: Heavy polar fleece sweaters.
• [ ] Waterproof Outer Shell: Down jacket rated for -10°C along with waterproof ski pants.
• [ ] Footwear: Waterproof snow boots with high ankle support and deep rubber lugs.
• [ ] Goggles: UV400 polarized ski sunglasses or snow goggles (snow glare causes quick eye strain).
• [ ] Accessories: Waterproof ski gloves, fleece balaclava, woolen beanies, and wool socks.
• [ ] Sun Safety: SPF 50+ sunscreen and lip balm (high altitude glare burns skin quickly).
• [ ] Personal Meds: Basic Diamox (for altitude sickness), pain relief gels, and personal first-aid.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Staying on the Auli slopes without booking snow transport in advance.
If you book a resort on upper Auli during January or February, road transit from Joshimath freezes over by late afternoon. If the cable car stops running at 4:00 PM, you will be stranded in Joshimath or stuck paying exorbitant emergency rates for local 4x4 snow-chain cabs.

Crucial Safety Precautions

• Altitude Sickness Awareness: Auli sits above 2,800m. If you fly directly into Dehradun and drive up to Auli in a single day, you may experience minor symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) like headaches or nausea. Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol on your first night.
• Highway Gate Timings: Mountain driving between Rishikesh and Joshimath is governed by safety gates. Night driving on the ghats is restricted past 8:00 PM.
• ATM Reliability: ATMs in Joshimath often run out of cash or lose network connectivity. Always withdraw cash in Rishikesh or Srinagar before driving up.

Nearby Attractions

• Tapovan Hot Springs (15 km from Joshimath): Natural sulfur hot springs where you can soak in warm waters fed by thermal volcanic fissures.
• Kalpeshwar Temple (30 km from Joshimath): One of the sacred Panch Kedar temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, accessible via a short 2 km walk from Urgam village.
• Badrinath Temple (45 km from Joshimath): Open from late April to early November. Located 1.5 hours past Joshimath along the Mana border route.
