The Ultimate Auli Travel Guide: Snowfall, Skiing, Cost & Best Time

Introduction

I’ll be honest with you. The first time I saw Auli's slopes stretching out beneath the shadow of Nanda Devi, I almost dropped my camera. Most travelers think Switzerland or Gulmarg when they want alpine powder, but Uttarakhand’s premier ski destination holds its own without draining your bank account.

Over my last four trips here—ranging from a bone-chilling January blizzard to a quiet green trek in June—I've figured out the exact logistics, costs, and hidden spots that most travel blogs gloss over. Let’s dive straight into the ultimate Auli travel guide.

Quick Facts About Auli

• Elevation: 2,500 to 3,050 meters above sea level.
• District: Chamoli, Uttarakhand, India.
• Major Peaks Visible: Nanda Devi, Kamet, Dronagiri, and Mana Parvat.
• Currency: Indian Rupee (INR). Cards work in Joshimath, but carry cash for Auli proper.
• Language Spoken: Garhwali, Hindi, and basic English.

Best Time to Visit

If you're chasing snow, lock in your dates between late December and February. This is peak ski season, and the GMVN (Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam) ski slopes turn into an absolute winter wonderland with 3 to 5 feet of snow accumulation.

Spring (March to April) brings blooming rhododendrons and milder weather, perfect for family trips. Summer (May to June) offers cool mountain breezes away from the blistering plains, while monsoon (July to September) is risky due to frequent landslides along the Joshimath-Auli road.

Weather Guide (Month-by-Month)

Pro Tip: Keep an eye on local weather reports a week prior to your winter trip. Snowfall schedules in Auli can shift by a couple of weeks depending on Western Disturbances.

How to Reach Auli

Getting to Auli requires a bit of effort, which is precisely why it hasn't turned into a crowded commercial trap like some other hill stations.

• By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, located about 270 km away. From the airport, hire a shared or private cab to Joshimath, which takes roughly 8 to 9 hours.
• By Train: Rishikesh Railway Station is the closest railhead, 255 km from Joshimath. Buses and taxis run regularly from outside the station.
• By Road: Drive from Delhi via Rishikesh, Devprayag, and Rudraprayag along NH 7. It's a gorgeous 500 km mountain drive that takes about 13-14 hours.

Once you reach Joshimath, you can take the famous Auli Ropeway (Cable Car) or drive up the 16 km winding mountain road directly to the ski resort area.

Getting Around

The Auli ropeway is one of the highest and longest in Asia, covering 4 km from Joshimath to Auli in about 20 minutes. It costs around ₹1,000 per person for a round trip.

Within Auli, everything is compact enough to explore on foot if you're staying near the main slopes. For sightseeing trips to Gurso Bugyal or Chattrakund, you can hire local 4x4 jeeps from Joshimath or Auli parking for about ₹1,500 to ₹2,500.

Top Things to Do

• Skiing and Snowboarding: Sign up for a 7-day or 14-day basic skiing course run by GMVN, or rent gear by the hour (approx. ₹500/day for skis and boots).
• Ride the Auli Ropeway: Don't skip this. The bird's-eye view of snow-draped oak forests is worth every rupee.
• Trek to Gurso Bugyal: A breezy 3 km trek through pine and oak forests leading to sprawling alpine meadows with unobstructed Himalayan panoramas.
• Visit Artificial Lake: One of the world's highest artificial lakes, built to produce artificial snow when natural snowfall falls short.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Skip the crowded main viewpoints and head to Chattrakund, a tiny sweet-water lake hidden deep inside a dense pine forest just 1 km past Auli. It’s deeply peaceful, and I've often sat there for hours without seeing another soul.

Another spot is Chenab Lake, roughly 30 km from Joshimath. It requires a rugged hike through rural Garhwali settlements, but the pristine blue waters and absolute isolation make it a photographer's dream.

Accommodation Guide

Where you stay dictates your experience. Staying in Joshimath is cheaper, but staying in Auli puts you right on the snow.

Where to Eat

Dining options in Auli proper are limited to resort dining halls and a few roadside tea stalls. For proper culinary variety, head down to Joshimath.

• Cliff Top Club Dining Room (Auli): Great for a hot cup of coffee with panoramic views through floor-to-ceiling glass.
• Narsingh Restaurant (Joshimath): Famous for piping hot Rajma Chawal and local Garhwali thalis.
• Hotel Dronagiri (Joshimath): Excellent North Indian and Chinese comfort food after a freezing day outdoors.

Packing Checklist

Don’t let the mountain cold catch you off guard. Pack these essentials:

• Thermal innerwear (at least 2 sets)
• Waterproof snow boots with good grip
• Windproof and waterproof outer jacket (Gore-Tex preferred)
• UV-protection snow goggles (glare off snow causes severe snow blindness)
• Woolen caps, gloves, and thick woolen socks
• High-SPF sunscreen and lip balm (mountain UV rays are brutal)

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Underestimating altitude sickness. Auli sits over 3,000 meters. Drink plenty of water and avoid heavy exertion on day one.

Common Mistake: Booking ski equipment from unauthorized street vendors. Always check the harness and bindings on rental skis before hitting steep runs.

Common Mistake: Ignoring road closure updates during heavy snowfall. Always check with local authorities in Joshimath before driving up.

Nearby Attractions

• Joshimath: The gateway town, famous for the Narasimha Temple and Adi Shankaracharya math.
• Badrinath Temple: Located about 45 km further up (though closed in winter due to snow).
• Valley of Flowers & Hemkund Sahib: Accessible during summer months via Govindghat (20 km away).
