How Much Does an Auli Trip Cost for 2 People? The Ultimate 2026 Budget Breakdown

Introduction

I’ve lost count of how many times travelers ask me, "Is Auli too expensive for a couple?" The truth is, people often overspend because they don't plan their transit from Rishikesh or Dehradun correctly. If you're heading to India's premier ski destination with your partner, you need a realistic financial roadmap.

Over my last three winter trips to Uttarakhand's Chamoli district, I tracked every single rupee spent. Whether you're backpacking on a tight budget or looking for a cozy mountain resort with panoramic Nanda Devi views, this guide breaks down the exact cost of an Auli trip for two people in 2026.

Quick Facts About Auli

Auli sits at an elevation ranging from 2,500 meters to 3,050 meters above sea level. It’s roughly 250 kilometers from Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport and 500 kilometers from Delhi. The local language is Garhwali, but Hindi and English are widely understood by hotel staff and drivers.

Pro Tip: ATMs in Auli are notoriously unreliable and often out of cash. Always withdraw enough cash in Joshimath or Rishikesh before heading up the mountain.

Best Time to Visit

Your Auli trip cost depends entirely on when you go. If you want pristine white snow for skiing, January and February are unmatched. If you prefer green meadows and clear Himalayan views for trekking, plan your trip between May and October.

Weather Guide

Understanding the month-by-month weather helps you pack right and avoid paying inflated peak-season prices.

• January to February: Freezing. Daytime temperatures hover around 5°C to 10°C, while nights drop to -4°C.
• March to April: Pleasantly chilly. Days reach 15°C; nights drop to 2°C.
• May to June: Mild and comfortable. Daytime is around 20°C; nights are cool at 8°C.
• July to September: Heavy rainfall, slippery mountain roads, and occasional roadblocks.
• October to December: Clear skies, dropping temperatures starting late November.

How to Reach Auli

Getting to Auli requires a multi-step journey since there is no direct airport or railway station. Most travelers fly into Dehradun or take a train to Haridwar, then hire a cab or take a bus to Joshimath.

• Delhi to Haridwar/Dehradun: Train or overnight Volvo bus (₹800 to ₹2,500 for two).
• Haridwar/Dehradun to Joshimath: Shared or private taxi. A private cab costs around ₹4,500 to ₹6,000 for a one-way drop.
• Joshimath to Auli: You can take the famous 4-km cable car (Auli Ropeway) for roughly ₹1,000 per person round trip, or a local taxi for ₹1,500.

Getting Around

Once you are in Auli, your feet and the ski lift will be your best friends. The main tourist area, artificial lake, and GMVN resort are within walking distance if you stay near the upper slopes. For moving between Joshimath and Auli, shared jeeps operate throughout the day and charge about ₹100 per seat.

Top Things to Do

Skiing is the crown jewel of Auli. A basic skiing course or a one-day rental package costs around ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 per person. Don't miss the Auli Ropeway ride—it’s one of the highest and longest ropeways in Asia.

Pro Tip: Book your ski equipment from the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) counters rather than random private vendors to ensure standard pricing and well-maintained gear.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Skip the crowded main artificial lake viewpoint and hike up to Chattrakund. It’s a tiny, crystal-clear freshwater lake nestled inside a dense oak forest, just 3 kilometers from Auli. Another underrated spot is Gurso Bugyal, a stunning meadow offering unobstructed views of Trishul and Dronagiri peaks.

Accommodation Guide

Where you stay dictates a massive chunk of your Auli trip budget. You can choose between staying in Joshimath (lower altitude, cheaper hotels) or right on the Auli slopes (expensive resorts with direct snow access).

• Budget: Guesthouses and homestays in Joshimath (₹1,500 - ₹2,500 per night).
• Mid-Range: Cozy hotels in Auli near the ropeway (₹4,000 - ₹7,000 per night).
• Luxury: Premium ski resorts like The Royal Village or Clifftop Club (₹10,000 - ₹18,000+ per night).

Where to Eat

Dining options directly on the Auli slopes are limited to hotel dining rooms and small maggi stalls. For affordable, delicious food, head down to Joshimath market.

• Singh Dhaba (Joshimath): Famous for piping hot rajma chawal and parathas (₹300 for two).
• Hotel Mount View Restaurant: Decent North Indian and Garhwali thalis.
• Café Auli: Great coffee and wood-fired pizza with a view of the slopes.

Packing Checklist

Packing for Auli requires layering. Do not skip thermal wear.

• 2 pairs of thermal innerwear
• Waterproof snow jacket and snow pants
• Trekking boots with good grip (or rent snow boots locally)
• Woolen beanies, gloves, and thick woolen socks
• UV-protected sunglasses (snow blindness is real)
• High-SPF sunscreen and lip balm
• Basic medical kit with Diamox for altitude sickness

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Many travelers drive all the way from Delhi and attempt to drive a hatchback up the icy Joshimath-Auli road. Leave your car in Joshimath and take a 4x4 local taxi.

Altitude sickness can catch you off guard. Stay hydrated, avoid heavy alcohol consumption on the first night, and give your body a few hours to adjust.

Nearby Attractions

If you have an extra day, extend your trip to Joshimath to visit the ancient Narsingh Temple or take the short drive to Badrinath (though the temple closes in winter, the road up to Joshimath is open). Vishnuprayag, where the Alaknanda and Dhauli Ganga rivers meet, is also right on your way.
