Auli 3-Day Itinerary: The Ultimate Snow Trip Plan

Introduction

Most travelers screw up their Auli trip because they treat it like a weekend hill station hop. They arrive in Joshimath without snow chains, miss the last ropeway up, and end up shivering in a overpriced hotel room while staring at brown patches of grass instead of powder snow. I’ve made those exact rookie mistakes so you don’t have to.

Over the past six years, I’ve spent countless winter weeks testing ski slopes, eating roadside maggi at sub-zero temperatures, and tracking the erratic Garhwal weather patterns. This Auli 3-day itinerary is the absolute blueprint you need for a seamless winter escape.

Quick Facts About Auli

Before you pack your bags, let's look at the baseline geography of what makes Auli unique. It sits in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand and was originally developed as a paramilitary skiing station.

• Elevation: Ranging from 2,500 meters to 3,050 meters above sea level.
• Major Peaks Visible: Nanda Devi (7,816m), Kamet, Mana, and Dronagiri.
• Famous Infrastructure: Home to Asia's longest operating cable car (ropeway) and a state-of-the-art chairlift.
• Cell Connectivity: BSNL and Jio work best here; Airtel drops signals frequently once you go above Joshimath.

Best Time to Visit

If you are coming strictly for snow, timing is everything. Auli relies heavily on western disturbances between late December and early March for its signature white-out conditions.

Pro Tip: Aim for the third week of January if you want pristine powder snow without the insane New Year tourist rush.

Weather Guide

Mountain weather shifts on a dime. Here's a realistic monthly breakdown of what to expect on the ground.

How to Reach Auli

Getting to Auli requires a multi-modal transit plan because there is no direct airport or railway station.

• By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, located 270 km away. From the airport, hire a private cab to Joshimath (approx. ₹5,500 to ₹7,000).
• By Train: Rishikesh Railway Station is the closest railhead, 250 km away. Regular buses and shared jeeps run from Rishikesh to Joshimath daily.
• By Road: Drive or take a bus via Haridwar -> Rishikesh -> Devprayag -> Rudraprayag -> Karnaprayag -> Chamoli -> Joshimath. The total drive from Rishikesh takes roughly 8 to 9 hours.

Getting Around

Once you reach Joshimath, your options for reaching the upper slopes of Auli are limited to two main choices.

• Joshimath-Auli Ropeway: The iconic 4-km cable car ride takes about 25 minutes and costs roughly ₹1,000 per person for a round trip. It offers jaw-dropping views of the valley.
• Road Transfer: A 16-km rugged mountain road connects Joshimath to Auli. Local snow-chained 4x4 cabs charge around ₹1,500 to ₹2,000 per vehicle one-way when snow blocks standard cars.

Top Things to Do

Day 1: Arrival, Ropeway Ride, and Sunset at Cliff Top

• 08:00 AM: Arrive in Joshimath and park your vehicle near the ropeway station.
• 09:30 AM: Board the first available cable car to Auli. Keep your camera ready as you glide over dense pine forests and snow-draped slopes.
• 11:00 AM: Check into your hotel (recommended: The Clifford Resort or Cliff Top Club).
• 01:00 PM: Grab a quick lunch of hot Rajma Chawal at a roadside dhaba near the artificial lake.
• 03:30 PM: Walk up to the Auli Artificial Lake. The reflection of Nanda Devi peak on the frozen water during sunset is unmatched.

Day 2: Skiing Masterclass and Chairlift Thrills

• 08:00 AM: Fuel up with parathas and hot chai. Head straight to the GMVN ski slopes.
• 09:00 AM: Rent your equipment. A basic ski rental package (skis, boots, poles) costs around ₹500 per day. Hire a local instructor for at least 2 hours (approx. ₹1,000) if you're a beginner.
• 01:00 PM: Take a break at the trackside stalls for instant Maggi and black tea.
• 02:30 PM: Buy a ticket for the Auli Chairlift (approx. ₹500 per ride) which takes you to the upper ridge for panoramic valley views.
• 05:00 PM: Enjoy a warm bonfire at your hotel patio under a blanket of stars.

Day 3: Gurson Bugyal Trek and Return Journey

• 07:30 AM: Pack your bags, check out, and leave luggage at the hotel reception.
• 08:00 AM: Start the 3-km moderate snow trek to Gurson Bugyal. You'll walk through pristine alpine meadows blanketed in knee-deep powder.
• 11:30 AM: Reach the viewpoint where you can see the Trishul peak up close. Take your photos and head back.
• 01:30 PM: Grab lunch in Auli, pick up your bags, and take the ropeway or cab back down to Joshimath.
• 03:30 PM: Depart from Joshimath toward Rishikesh or Dehradun for your onward journey.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Skip the crowded tourist clusters and explore these lesser-known spots:

• Chattrakund: A tiny, crystal-clear freshwater lake nestled amidst a dense oak forest, located just 1 km past Gurson Bugyal. It is rarely visited by casual tourists in winter.
• Chenab Lake: Tucked away near Joshimath, this emerald green lake requires a 5-km off-road trek through isolated terrain. Hire a local guide from Joshimath to take you here safely.

Accommodation Guide

Where you stay dictates your entire experience. Booking a stay on the upper slopes saves you daily ropeway hassles.

• Luxury: Cliff Top Club – The only resort located right on the ski slopes at 3,000 meters. Perfect ski-in, ski-out access.
• Mid-Range: The Clifford Resort – Excellent valley views, reliable heating, and warm hospitality near the lower slopes.
• Budget: GMVN Auli Ski Resort – Government-run, basic amenities, unbeatable location right next to the ski lift.

Where to Eat

Dining options in Auli are limited to resort dining halls and small tea stalls. Do not expect fine dining.

• Garhwali Thali: Try authentic local dishes like Kafuli (spinach and fenugreek curry) and Bhang ki Chutney.
• Roadside Shacks: The cluster of stalls near the artificial lake serves piping hot Maggi, momos, and ginger tea.
• Resort Dining: Most mid-to-high-end properties serve multi-cuisine buffets since standalone restaurants are scarce.

Budget Breakdown (with INR Tables)

Here is what a 3-day winter trip to Auli realistically costs per person on twin-sharing.

Packing Checklist

Packing right will save you from hypothermia. Do not skip these essentials.

• Clothing: Thermal innerwear (at least 2 pairs), fleece jackets, waterproof heavy snow jacket, windproof snow pants.
• Footwear: Waterproof snow boots with deep treads. Regular sneakers will get soaked instantly.
• Accessories: UV-protection sunglasses (snow blindness is real), woolen beanies, waterproof gloves, and woolen socks.
• Skincare: Heavy-duty cold cream, lip balm with SPF, and high-SPF sunscreen.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Many travelers drive a small hatchback all the way up to Auli without snow chains in January. Their cars slip on black ice, blocking the entire mountain pass.

• Stay Hydrated: The high altitude dehydrates you faster than you realize. Carry a thermos of warm water.
• Cash is King: ATMs in Joshimath frequently run out of cash or power during heavy snowstorms. Carry at least ₹5,000 in physical cash.
• Check Ropeway Timings: The cable car closes sharp by 4:00 PM. Missing it means paying exorbitant rates for a night road cab up the mountain.

Nearby Attractions

If you have an extra day to spare, check out these spots near Joshimath:

• Joshimath Narasimha Temple: An ancient temple dating back to the Adi Shankaracharya era.
• Tapovan: Famous for its natural hot sulfur springs, located 15 km from Joshimath.
• Badrinath Temple: Though closed in peak winter, the gateway town of Pandukeshwar offers serene winter vistas.
