The Ultimate Guide to the Best Free Things to Do in Rishikesh

Introduction

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve visited Rishikesh over the last decade. Every single time, I’m reminded that the best experiences here don't cost a single rupee. Sure, you can drop ₹3,000 on a rafting trip or book an expensive wellness resort, but the soul of this town lives in its alleyways, riverbanks, and evening chants.

If you're traveling on a tight budget, you're in the right place. I’ve put together this comprehensive guide covering the absolute best free things to do in Rishikesh, drawing from my years of pounding these footpaths.

Let’s dive straight in.

Quick Facts About Rishikesh

• Location: Dehradun district, Uttarakhand, India
• Elevation: 372 meters (1,220 feet) above sea level
• Primary River: Ganges (Ganga)
• Famous Title: Yoga Capital of the World
• Currency: Indian Rupee (INR)
• Language: Hindi, Garhwali, English

Best Time to Visit

Timing matters in the foothills of the Himalayas. If you want pleasant weather for walking and exploring outdoors without melting, aim for the shoulder months.

Monsoons bring heavy rains that make river activities dangerous, while peak winter gets genuinely chilly once the sun dips behind the mountains. Spring and autumn offer that sweet spot where you can hike for hours in a t-shirt.

How to Reach Rishikesh

Getting here won't break the bank if you plan ahead.

• By Air: Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport (DED) is the closest, sitting about 21 km away. A shared taxi into town costs around ₹400 to ₹600, while a private cab runs about ₹1,200.
• By Train: Yoga Nagari Rishikesh (YNRK) railway station connects to major hubs. Alternatively, take a train to Haridwar (25 km away) and catch a cheap ₹50 local bus.
• By Bus: Regular overnight Volvo and state buses run from Delhi’s Kashmiri Gate ISBT to Rishikesh bus station. Fares range from ₹450 for standard roadways buses to ₹1,200 for AC sleepers.

Pro Tip: Book your train tickets via IRCTC at least 60 days in advance to secure seats, as weekend travelers from Delhi pack these routes instantly.

Getting Around

Forget renting expensive cars. Rishikesh is best explored on foot or two wheels.

• Walking: Ram Jhula and Lakshman Jhula areas are heavily pedestrianized (though vehicle rules fluctuate). Walking costs ₹0 and lets you discover hidden alleyways.
• Shared Autos: Local three-wheelers ply fixed routes across the town. Trips across the bridges or to the main market cost between ₹20 and ₹40 per person.
• Scooter Rental: If you want absolute freedom, rent an Activa for roughly ₹400 to ₹500 per day (plus petrol).

Top Things to Do

1. Attend the Parmarth Niketan Ganga Aarti

Skip the crowded tourist spectacles and head straight to Parmarth Niketan in Swarg Ashram. Every evening at sunset, spiritual leaders and students chant bhajans while lighting massive multi-tiered brass lamps.

It’s entirely free to attend, though donations are welcome. Grab a spot on the concrete steps facing the river at least 45 minutes before sunset to get a clear view.

2. Walk Across Ram Jhula and Lakshman Jhula

These iconic suspension bridges span the raging emerald waters of the Ganges. Walking across them is an essential Rishikesh rite of passage.

While Lakshman Jhula underwent structural repairs recently, Ram Jhula remains fully operational and offers prime viewing spots for watching river rafters and sadhus.

3. Chill Out at Neem Beach and Garud Chatti Waterfall

Neem Beach, located a couple of kilometers past Ram Jhula on the Neelkanth Road, is a quiet stretch of pebble shore. It’s the ideal spot to sit for hours listening to the rush of water.

Further up the road, Garud Chatti waterfall has a small entry fee, but walking the forest trail leading up to it costs nothing and offers stunning valley views.

4. Explore the Abandoned Beatles Ashram (Chaurasi Kutia)

While the government charges a modest entry fee for tourists now, you can often walk the perimeter trails or check out the graffiti art outside the complex for free. Inside, exploring the dome-shaped meditation cells where the Fab Four stayed in 1968 costs ₹150 for Indians and ₹600 for foreigners.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

1. Tera Manzil Temple (Trimbakeshwar Temple)

Located near Lakshman Jhula, this striking 13-story temple stands out with its vibrant architecture. You can climb all the way to the top floor for zero cost.

Common Mistake: Don't wear shoes inside. Leave them at the shoe-keeping counter at the base to avoid stepping on holy floors with footwear.

2. Patna Waterfall Jungle Trail

Skip the crowded waterfalls where entrance fees apply. The trek to Patna Waterfall starts near the village of Patna on the Neelkanth road.

It’s a steep 1.5 km uphill hike through dense jungle, completely free, and leads to natural limestone caves and a cascading stream.

3. Sunset at Ghats of Muni Ki Reti

While Triveni Ghat gets packed with tour buses, the smaller ghats scattered around Muni Ki Reti offer serene stone steps where you can sit quietly with local sadhus and watch the sun dip behind the Shivalik hills.

Where to Eat (Local Food Guide)

Eating cheap in Rishikesh is remarkably easy if you skip the overpriced Western cafes in Tapovan.

• Ayur Pakshala: Great for clean, simple vegetarian thalis.
• Street Stalls near Ram Jhula: Grab piping hot samosas and aloo puri for under ₹40.
• Little Buddha Cafe: While slightly more expensive, you can sit for hours nursing a ₹60 lemon ginger honey tea while overlooking the Ganges.

Budget Breakdown

Here is what a realistic 3-day budget trip looks like for a solo traveler doing mostly free activities:

Packing Checklist

• Comfortable walking shoes or hiking sandals
• Modest clothing (shoulders and knees covered for temple visits)
• Refillable water bottle (to save money and cut plastic waste)
• Lightweight rain jacket (if visiting during monsoon or spring showers)
• Quick-dry towel for swimming at river beaches

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

• Strong Undertow: Never underestimate the Ganges current. The water looks calm near the banks, but undercurrents are notoriously dangerous. Stick to shallow, designated pebble beaches.
• Dress Respectfully: Rishikesh is a holy city. Walking around shirtless or in swimwear away from the riverbanks disrespects local customs.
• Monkey Management: Keep food out of sight around Lakshman Jhula. The local macaques are bold and quick to snatch bags.

Nearby Attractions

• Haridwar (25 km): Famous for Har Ki Pauri and massive evening Ganga Aarti.
• Rajaji National Park (18 km): Great for wildlife safaris and spotting Asian elephants.
• Devprayag (70 km): The confluence where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers meet to form the Ganges.
