Introduction
I’ve spent the last decade exploring the winding mountain roads radiating out from Rishikesh. Most travelers get stuck sipping ginger lemon honey tea in Laxman Jhula, completely missing the raw, pine-scented valleys hiding just a short drive away. If you've got a weekend to spare and want to escape the ashram loudspeakers, you don't need to drive far.
Within a 100 km radius of Rishikesh, you’ll find roaring river confluences, crisp alpine ridges, and silent waterfalls that most tour buses bypass entirely. Whether you're hiring a scooter from Tapovan or booking a cab, these spots offer a genuine breath of fresh Himalayan air. Let's dive into the absolute best places to visit near Rishikesh within 100 km.
Quick Facts About Exploring Near Rishikesh
- Maximum Radius: 100 km from Rishikesh main market.
- Primary Terrain: Foothills of the Garhwal Himalayas, ranging from 340 meters (Shivpuri) to 2,590 meters (Kanatal).
- Major Rivers: Ganga, Alaknanda, Bhagirathi, and Heval.
- Primary Languages: Garhwali, Hindi, English.
- Currency: Indian Rupee (INR). Carry cash as UPI doesn't work reliably above Shivpuri.
Best Time to Visit
You can visit this region year-round, but your experience changes drastically depending on the month. Spring (March to May) brings blooming rhododendrons and perfect weather for river adventures. Monsoon (July to August) turns the hills emerald green, though landslides can make mountain roads tricky. Winter (October to February) brings freezing nights and occasional snowfall in places like Kanatal.

How to Reach Rishikesh and Surroundings
Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport (DED) is just 21 km from Rishikesh. If you're coming by train, Yog Nagari Rishikesh (YNRK) connects major Indian cities directly. To reach destinations within 100 km like Devprayag, Kanatal, or New Tehri, your best bet is hiring a private taxi from the Rishikesh taxi stand near the railway station or renting a geared motorcycle.
Pro Tip: Rent a Himalayan 411 or 450 from agencies in Tapovan for roughly ₹1,000–₹1,500 per day. The twisties heading up to Kanatal demand good torque.
Getting Around
Public buses (operated by Uttarakhand Transport Corporation) run frequently from Rishikesh to Devprayag and Srinagar, but they follow rigid schedules. Shared jeeps (Maxos) are faster and leave when full from the Rishikesh bus station. For total freedom, self-drive rentals or a chartered cab is worth the extra INR.

- Avoid swimming in the Ganga outside designated, supervised zones; the undercurrents are deceptively powerful.
- Keep your vehicle papers updated if you are self-driving.
