What Is Bajrang Setu in Rishikesh? Glass Skywalk Complete Guide

Introduction

If you've visited Rishikesh before, you probably remember crossing the iconic, swaying iron chains of Ram Jhula. For decades, it was the main artery connecting the east and west banks of the Ganges. But with thousands of pilgrims and travelers funneling through every single day, it was time for a massive upgrade. Enter Bajrang Setu, the engineering marvel built right alongside the historic structure.

What makes this bridge a game-changer isn't just its extra capacity—it's the transparent glass flooring sections that let you look straight down at the rushing holy river below. I walked across it just weeks after opening, and I'm here to give you the exact lowdown. Whether you're planning a weekend trip from Delhi or building out a larger Uttarakhand itinerary, this guide covers everything from tickets to local parking hacks.

Quick Facts About Bajrang Setu

Before you lace up your walking shoes, here are the essential stats you need to know about Rishikesh's newest landmark:

• Location: Parallel to the existing Ram Jhula, connecting Swargashram to Tapovan/Sivananda Nagar.
• Structure Type: Suspension bridge with pedestrian glass-walkway sections.
• Primary Material: Advanced structural steel and heavy-duty reinforced glass panels.
• Vehicle Access: Strictly pedestrian and two-wheelers (depending on local traffic regulations).
• Cost to Cross: Currently free for pedestrians, though nominal maintenance fees may apply during peak tourist seasons.

Pro Tip: Cross during early morning hours (between 6:00 AM and 8:00 AM) if you want to test the glass floor without crowds blocking your view of the Ganges.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to experience Bajrang Setu and Rishikesh as a whole is between October and March. The monsoon rains have cleared up, the air is crisp, and the daytime temperatures hover comfortably around 20°C to 25°C.

Avoid visiting during the peak summer months of May and June unless you love dry heat pushing past 40°C. If you're a spiritual traveler, plan your trip around Shivaratri or Kartik Purnima to see the ghats lit up with thousands of diyas.

Weather Guide

Here's a month-by-month breakdown of what to expect when planning your trip to Rishikesh:

How to Reach Bajrang Setu

Rishikesh is well-connected by road, rail, and air. Here is how you can get right to the foot of Bajrang Setu:

• By Air: Fly into Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport (DED), located about 21 kilometers away. From the airport, take a prepaid taxi (₹800 - ₹1,200) directly to Ram Jhula parking.
• By Train: Rishikesh has a main railway station (RKSH), but Yog Nagari Rishikesh (YNRK) is the primary terminal for most express trains from Delhi. An auto-rickshaw from the station to Ram Jhula costs roughly ₹150 - ₹200.
• By Road: Overnight Volvo buses run frequently from Delhi's Kashmiri Gate ISBT to Rishikesh (approx. 6 to 7 hours, costing ₹500 - ₹900).

Getting Around

Once you arrive near Ram Jhula and Bajrang Setu, vehicular traffic is heavily restricted. You'll rely primarily on your feet, local auto-rickshaws, and electric rickshaws (e-rickshaws).

• Walking: The best way to explore. The bridge connects major ashrams directly to local cafes.
• E-Rickshaws: Shared e-rickshaws cost around ₹20 per person and run along the main arterial roads on both sides of the river.
• Two-Wheeler Rentals: You can rent a scooter (Activa or similar) for around ₹400 to ₹600 per day from shops near the Tapovan bypass.
