Introduction
I have driven up the winding roads of Uttarakhand more times than I can count. Whether I am taking my parents to the calm shores of Bhimtal or leading a group of friends toward the ski slopes of Auli, this state never gets old. But planning a trip here can quickly get overwhelming. Do you book a fixed group departure or a private family cab? Should you stick to the classic hill stations or head deep into the Garhwal Himalayas?
After fifteen years of exploring the Devbhoomi (Land of the Gods), I put together this comprehensive guide. We will look at exact costs, custom itineraries for families, romantic spots for couples, and practical advice you won't find on generic booking sites. Let's find the exact package that fits your travel style.
Quick Facts About Uttarakhand Tour Packages
Before picking a package, you need a quick lay of the land. Uttarakhand is split into two regions: Garhwal (north-west) and Kumaon (south-east). Most standard tour packages focus on one of these zones because driving between them takes longer than you think.
Pro Tip: Don't try to cover both Kumaon (Nainital/Almora) and Garhwal (Mussoorie/Auli) in a standard 5-day trip. You'll spend half your vacation sitting in a car.
Best Time to Visit
Uttarakhand changes character completely with the seasons. Families usually prefer the pleasant summer months, while couples chasing snow head up between December and February. Adventure seekers look at the post-monsoon window from September to November when the skies clear up.
If you're planning a Char Dham Yatra or high-altitude trekking, May to June and September to October are your golden windows. Avoid July and August unless you enjoy landslides and blocked mountain highways.

How to Reach Uttarakhand
Getting to Uttarakhand depends entirely on your starting point and your first destination. If you are heading to Mussoorie, Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport is your best bet. It is about 30 km from Dehradun city and 65 km from Mussoorie.
For Kumaon destinations like Nainital and Bhimtal, fly into Pantnagar Airport or take the overnight Ranikhet Express from Old Delhi to Kathgodam Railway Station. Kathgodam is the gateway to Kumaon; from here, shared taxis and private cabs are readily available.
Getting Around
Public buses run between major towns, but they are painfully slow and often overcrowded. If you are traveling with family or a group, hiring a dedicated cab for the entire trip is the only way to go.
Most tour packages include a dedicated vehicle like a Swift Dzire for couples or an Innova Crysta for families and groups. Expect to pay between ₹3,500 and ₹5,500 per day for a cab, which covers fuel, driver allowance, and toll taxes.
Top Things to Do
Your itinerary depends on who you are traveling with, but a few experiences are non-negotiable.
- Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri, Haridwar: Witnessing the evening ritual with thousands of floating diyas is hypnotic.
- Skiing in Auli: Even if you aren't a pro, the ropeway ride and snow views rival the Swiss Alps.
- Corbett Jungle Safari: Book an open jeep safari in the Dhikala or Bijrani zones for a shot at spotting a Royal Bengal Tiger.
- Boating on Naini Lake: A classic family evening activity in Nainital.
Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path
Want to dodge the tourist crowds? Swap crowded Mussoorie for Kanatal, a quiet pine forest hamlet just 38 km away. Kanatal offers pristine views of the snow-capped peaks without the honking traffic.
In Kumaon, skip Nainital for a couple of days and drive up to Mukteshwar. Visit the 350-year-old Mukteshwar Dham and walk through the dense orchards of Chauthi Ki Jaali. It is peaceful, dramatically scenic, and far better for couples looking for solitude.
Accommodation Guide
उत्तराखंड (Uttarakhand) offers everything from basic homestays to luxury heritage hotels.
- For Couples: Look for boutique properties like The Roseate Ganges in Rishikesh or Sterling Corbett for private balconies and mountain views.
- For Families: Opt for resorts with lawns and indoor activities, such as Club Mahindra Corbett or Lemon Tree Hotel in Dehradun.
- For Groups: Rent a private villa in Bhimtal or book heritage bungalows managed by Himalayan Eco Lodges.
Where to Eat
Mountain food is hearty, simple, and designed to keep you warm. Don't leave without trying Kafuli (a spinach and fenugreek curry), Bhang ki Chutney (made from hemp seeds), and Mandwa ki Roti (finger millet flatbread).
If you are in Dehradun, stop by Kalsang Friends Corner for authentic Tibetan food. In Nainital, Embassy Restaurant on Mall Road serves reliable North Indian fare after a long day of walking.

Packing Checklist
Mountain weather is notoriously unpredictable. Even in summer, evenings get chilly.
- Layered clothing (thermal innerwear, fleece jacket, windproof outer shell)
- Sturdy trekking shoes with good grip
- Sunglasses, sunscreen (SPF 50+), and lip balm
- Personal medical kit with motion sickness pills (crucial for winding roads)
- Power banks (cold drains phone batteries fast)
Safety Tips & Common Mistakes
Common Mistake: Packing too much into a single day. Mountain roads take twice as long as Google Maps predicts due to winding terrain and occasional truck traffic.
Always carry physical cash. UPI works in major towns like Dehradun and Nainital, but you will lose network connectivity and digital payment access once you head into remote areas like Chopta or Munsiyari.
Nearby Attractions
If you have extra days, consider extending your trip across the border into Himachal Pradesh (via Chakrata) or exploring the border town of Mana, the last village of India near the Tibet border.
