Bhimtal One-Day Itinerary: Best Places & Things to Do

Introduction

Most people treat Bhimtal as a quick stopover on their way to Nainital. Big mistake. While its famous neighbor gets choked with traffic and weekend warriors, Bhimtal keeps a quieter, more reflective pace. I spent three weeks living out of a homestay near the lake just to figure out how to squeeze the absolute best of it into 24 hours.

If you've only got one day, you can't afford to waste time wandering aimlessly or getting stuck in parking bottlenecks. This guide gives you a minute-by-minute blueprint. We'll cover the exact boat ride prices, where to get authentic Kumaoni food, and a secret viewpoint that most tour buses completely miss.

Quick Facts About Bhimtal

Bhimtal sits in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand at an altitude of 1,370 meters (4,495 feet). It's named after Bhima from the Mahabharata, who supposedly visited the area and dug a lake using his mace.

Unlike Nainital, Bhimtal's centerpiece is a cleaner, larger lake featuring an island aquarium right in the middle. It's roughly 22 kilometers from Nainital and about 300 kilometers from Delhi, making it an ideal weekend escape if you dodge the Friday night exodus.

Best Time to Visit

Bhimtal works year-round, but your experience depends entirely on the season. March to June brings pleasant spring and summer weather, perfect for boating and walking around without a heavy jacket.

Monsoons (July to September) turn the surrounding hills a deep, vibrant green, though slippery roads require caution. Winters (October to February) get genuinely cold, especially at night when temperatures drop close to freezing, but you'll get crystal-clear mountain views.

How to Reach Bhimtal

Getting here is straightforward, whether you're driving or taking public transit.

By Air: The nearest airport is Pantnagar Airport, located 58 kilometers away. A taxi from the airport to Bhimtal costs roughly ₹1,500 to ₹2,000 and takes about 1.5 hours.

By Train: Kathgodam Railway Station is the terminus for trains from Delhi, including the overnight Ranikhet Express. Kathgodam is just 22 kilometers from Bhimtal. Shared cabs outside the station cost around ₹100 per seat, while a private cab runs about ₹700.

By Road: Driving from Delhi takes 6 to 7 hours via the NH 9 through Rampur and Rudrapur. The road is mostly smooth until the final climb into the foothills.

Pro Tip: Take the overnight train from Delhi to Kathgodam. You'll arrive fresh at 6:00 AM, beat the traffic, and gain an extra half-day of exploring.

Getting Around

Bhimtal's main lake area is compact enough to explore on foot. However, if you want to visit the Hidimbamba Temple or higher viewpoints, you'll need transport.

Local auto-rickshaws are available near the main bus stand, but they charge flat tourist rates unless you bargain hard. Renting a scooter costs around ₹500 to ₹700 per day and gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace.

Top Things to Do

Here is how to structure your 24 hours in Bhimtal for maximum impact.

8:30 AM – Morning Boating to Bhimtal Island

Start your day on the water before the sun gets harsh. Head to the main boat stand near the Bhimtal Lake embankment. Hire a paddle boat or a traditional rowboat to visit the island in the center, which houses a small public aquarium.

• Cost: ₹200–₹400 per boat for a 30-minute ride; ₹50 extra for the island aquarium.
• Time Needed: 1 hour.

10:00 AM – Visit the Bhimeshwar Mahadev Temple

Located on the banks of the lake, this ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Legend says it was built by Bhima during the Pandavas' exile. The architecture is traditional Kumaoni, and the atmosphere in the morning is profoundly peaceful.

• Cost: Free.
• Time Needed: 30 minutes.

11:30 AM – Explore the Folk Culture Museum (Lok Sanskriti Sangrahalaya)

Founded by Dr. Yashodhar Mathpal, this private museum is a goldmine for anyone interested in Himalayan history. You'll find ancient wooden masks, tribal jewelry, old agricultural tools, and rare photographs of Kumaon's rural life.

• Cost: ₹50 per person.
• Time Needed: 45 minutes.

1:00 PM – Lunch with a Lake View

Grab lunch at one of the lakeside cafes. Order some local Kumaoni dal and madua (finger millet) roti if you want authentic flavors, or stick to wood-fired pizza if you prefer comfort food.

2:30 PM – Drive Up to Hidimbamba Temple

Rent a scooter or grab a taxi and drive 5 kilometers up to Hidimbamba Devi Temple, set amidst a dense oak and pine forest. Named after Hidimba from the Mahabharata, this wooden pagoda-style temple sits on a hill called Vankhandi. The silence here is absolute, broken only by bird calls.

• Cost: Free (Transport: ₹500 for a hired cab or scooter rental).
• Time Needed: 1.5 hours.

4:30 PM – Sunset at NalDamyanti Tal

End your day trip with a quick 4-kilometer detour to NalDamyanti Tal. This smaller, sacred natural lake is shrouded in local myth—locals believe King Nala drowned his chariot here. Unlike the main lake, there are no commercial boats or water sports here. Just sit on the grass and watch the changing colors of the sky reflect off the water.

• Cost: Free.
• Time Needed: 1 hour.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Want to escape the day-trippers entirely? Head to Victoria Dam, built at the lower end of Bhimtal Lake in 1883. Most tourists stick to the main promenade, leaving the dam area quiet and shaded by tall eucalyptus trees.

Another secret spot is the Vankhandi Ashram, a wildlife sanctuary and meditation center near Hidimbamba Temple founded by environmentalist Dr. Vankhandi Maharaj. It's a steep 20-minute uphill walk through the forest, but you'll get sweeping views of the entire Bhimtal valley without another soul in sight.

Accommodation Guide

If you decide to stretch your day trip into an overnight stay, Bhimtal has options ranging from backpacker hostels to luxury lakeside resorts.

Where to Eat (Local Food Guide)

Don't leave without trying authentic Kumaoni dishes. Look for Bhang ki Chutney (a tangy condiment made from roasted hemp seeds), Aloo Gutuk (spiced fried potatoes), and Paan Ke Gutke.

• The Verandah at The Satyai Resort: Excellent for fine dining with lake views.
• IHeart Cafe: Located slightly outside town on the way to Sattal. Run by a local couple, they serve incredible organic coffee, homemade burgers, and wood-fired pizzas.
• Local Dhaba near Bus Stand: Perfect for a quick, budget-friendly plate of piping hot momos or chowmein.

Budget Breakdown (INR Tables)

Here is what a standard one-day trip to Bhimtal will cost you per person, excluding overnight accommodation.

Packing Checklist

Packing right ensures you aren't caught off guard by the mountain weather.

• Comfortable walking shoes (for temple trails and uneven lakeside paths)
• Light jacket or fleece (even in summer, evenings get breezy)
• Sunglasses and sunscreen
• Reusable water bottle
• Power bank (mountain cold drains phone batteries fast)
• Basic first-aid and motion sickness pills for the winding roads

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Packing too much into a single day. Trying to visit Nainital, Bhimtal, and Sattal all in one day means you'll spend 4 hours sitting in traffic. Pick Bhimtal and stick to it.

• Driving Safety: Mountain roads require patience. Don't overtake on blind curves, and always use your horn around sharp bends.
• Littering: Bhimtal Lake is protected. Avoid throwing plastic wrappers or bottles into the water; local fines are strictly enforced.
• Monsoon Caution: If visiting between July and August, watch out for sudden landslides on the Kathgodam-Bhimtal highway.

Nearby Attractions

If you have extra time or decide to extend your trip, check out these spots within a 10-kilometer radius:

• Sattal (4 km): A cluster of seven interconnected freshwater lakes surrounded by dense oak forests. A haven for birdwatchers.
• Naukuchiatal (7 km): The 'lake of nine corners', famous for paragliding and quiet lakeside walks.
• Kargotak Temple (3 km): Dedicated to the snake god, perched on a hilltop offering 360-degree views of the valley.
