Chopta 3-Day Itinerary: Tungnath, Chandrashila & Camping Guide

Introduction

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve driven up the winding roads of Garhwal just to catch the sunrise from Chandrashila peak. Chopta, often called the 'Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand,' isn't just another weekend hill station. It’s the launchpad for some of the most sacred and visually arresting alpine treks in the Indian Himalayas.

Most travelers rush through Chopta in a weekend, ticking off Tungnath and heading back down. That’s a mistake. You need a solid three days to let the mountain air sink in, acclimatize properly, and truly experience the meadows, forests, and star-filled night skies.

Whether you're planning your first Himalayan trek or looking for a reliable camping blueprint, this guide lays out everything you need. No fluff, just hard-earned field notes from years on the trail.

Quick Facts About Chopta

• Elevation: 2,680 meters (8,790 ft) above sea level, with Tungnath at 3,680m and Chandrashila at 4,000m.
• Location: Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand, inside Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary.
• Major Highlights: World's highest Shiva temple (Tungnath), 360-degree Himalayan panorama from Chandrashila, and pristine alpine meadows.
• Mobile Network: BSNL works best. Jio and Airtel have intermittent coverage in patches. Don't expect 5G.
• Nearest ATM: Ukhimath (approx. 25 km away). Carry cash; digital payments fail frequently due to poor connectivity.

Best Time to Visit

Chopta changes character entirely depending on when you visit. If you want carpets of wild alpine flowers, come in July and August. If you want crystalline mountain views and crisp blue skies, October to November is your window.

Pro Tip: Avoid July and August if you hate leeches on the Tungnath trail. They come out in full force during the peak monsoon rains.

How to Reach Chopta

Getting to Chopta requires a mix of road travel and, optionally, a train or flight to Dehradun or Rishikesh.

• By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun (approx. 220 km away). From the airport, hire a direct cab to Chopta (INR 5,500–INR 7,000) or take a bus to Rishikesh first.
• By Train: Rishikesh Railway Station is the closest major railhead (approx. 205 km away). Shared jeos and buses run from Rishikesh to Ukhimath and Chopta daily.
• By Road: Chopta is well-connected by motorable roads via Rishikesh, Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Ukhimath. If you’re driving your own car, ensure your brakes and clutch are in top shape; the incline is steep.

Getting Around

Once you arrive in Chopta, your own two feet are your primary mode of transport. The Tungnath trek starts right from Chopta market.

For exploring nearby spots like Deoriatal (Sari village) or Ukhimath, you can hire local taxis from the Chopta taxi stand. Expect to pay around INR 1,500 to INR 2,500 for a day trip. Hitchhiking with local utility trucks (Vikrams) is common, but negotiate the fare beforehand.

Top Things to Do

Day 1: Arrival, Chopta Meadows & Acclimatization Walk

Check into your campsite by noon. Spend your first afternoon stretching your legs on the gentle Bugyals (meadows) surrounding Chopta.

Don't push for elevation today. Let your body adjust to the 2,680-meter altitude. In the evening, watch the sun dip behind the Trishul and Nanda Devi ranges while sipping hot ginger tea at a local dhaba.

Day 2: The Chopta to Tungnath & Chandrashila Trek

Wake up at 4:00 AM. Hit the trail by 5:00 AM to beat the sun and catch sunrise over the peaks.

The trek from Chopta to Tungnath is 3.5 km of paved stone pathway with gradual inclines. It takes about 2 hours. Stop at Tungnath Temple, the highest Shiva temple in the world.

From Tungnath, the trail to Chandrashila peak gets steeper and transforms into a rocky, unpaved ridge climb for another 1.5 km. The final push is brutal on the lungs, but standing at 4,000 meters with 360-degree views of Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, and Kedar Dome makes every drop of sweat worth it. Descend back to Chopta by afternoon.

Day 3: Sari Village to Deoriatal Trek & Departure

Pack your bags and drive 14 km to Sari village. Park your vehicle and start the 2.5 km trek to Deoriatal.

The trail goes through dense oak and rhododendron forests. Deoriatal is a pristine high-altitude lake famous for the reflection of Chaukhamba peak on its crystal-clear surface. Spend a couple of hours here absorbing the silence before hiking back to Sari and beginning your journey home.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

• Rohini Bugyal: Located midway between Sari village and Deoriatal, this meadow sees a fraction of the tourists. It's an incredible spot for birdwatching.
• Baniyakund: Just 4 km before Chopta, this quiet valley offers unobstructed forest camping away from the main road noise.
• Kanchula Korak Musk Deer Sanctuary: Situated just past Chopta on the Gopeshwar road, keep your eyes peeled for rare Himalayan fauna if you take a quiet morning walk here.

Accommodation Guide

Chopta offers everything from rustic alpine tents to basic homestays.

• Camping: The best way to experience Chopta. Campsites come equipped with waterproof Swiss tents, shared or attached toilets, and bonfires at night.
• Homestays & Guest Houses: Basic concrete rooms available in Chopta market and Sari village. Don't expect luxury; hot water is often supplied in buckets via immersion rods.

Where to Eat (Local Food Guide)

Culinary options in Chopta are simple, comforting, and hot.

• Pahadi Dhabas in Chopta Market: Try the local Mandua ki Roti (finger millet flatbread) served with Gahat Dal (horse gram soup) and fresh local ghee.
• Maggi & Chai Stalls: Scattered every kilometer along the Tungnath trail. A steaming plate of Maggi at 3,400 meters tastes better than any five-star meal.
• Ukhimath Eateries: If you descend to Ukhimath for lunch, stop at local sweet shops for piping hot Aloo Puri and fresh buffalo milk tea.

Budget Breakdown (with INR tables)

Here is what a standard 3-day trip to Chopta costs per person on a twin-sharing basis.

Packing Checklist

• Layering: Thermal innerwear, fleece jacket, windproof/waterproof outer shell.
• Footwear: High-ankle waterproof trekking boots with good grip. Break them in before the trip.
• Gear: 20-30L daypack, trekking poles (essential for Chandrashila descent), reusable water bottle.
• Personal Care: High SPF sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses, personal medical kit with Diamox (consult your doctor first).

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Common Mistake: Skipping acclimatization. Walking straight off a bus at 2,700m and immediately attempting a high-exertion trek to Chandrashila is a fast track to acute mountain sickness (AMS).

• Stay Hydrated: Drink at least 3-4 liters of water daily while trekking.
• Carry Cash: ATMs in Chopta are notoriously unreliable. Bring enough cash from Rishikesh or Srinagar.
• Respect Wildlife: Chopta lies within a sanctuary. Do not litter plastic bottles or wrappers on the trail.

Nearby Attractions

• Ukhimath (Winter seat of Kedarnath): 25 km from Chopta. Famous for ancient temples and traditional Garhwali architecture.
• Karthik Swami Temple: Located near Kund village, famous for being the only temple dedicated to Lord Murugan in North India, perched on a dramatic ridge.
• Anusuya Devi Temple: A secluded trek starting from Mandal village, known for its tranquil waterfall and dense forest trails.
