Chopta Tungnath Chandrashila Trek: The Ultimate 3-Day Itinerary for 2026

Introduction

I still remember my first time driving up the winding mountain roads toward Chopta. The air turned crisp, the pine trees thickened, and suddenly, the massive snow-capped peaks of the Garhwal Himalayas revealed themselves. People call Chopta the 'Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand,' but honestly, that label doesn't do it justice. It's raw, it's quiet, and it's home to the highest Shiva temple in the world.

If you're eyeing the Chopta Tungnath Chandrashila trek, you're looking for the right mix of spiritual heritage and high-altitude adventure. This 3-day itinerary cuts through the fluff. I'll give you exact costs in INR, real distances, and the exact spots where most tourists make mistakes. Let's get into it.

Quick Facts About Chopta Tungnath Chandrashila Trek

Before packing your bags, you need to know the baseline stats of the trek. Don't let the short distance fool you; the elevation gain will test your lungs.

• Starting Point: Chopta Base
• Maximum Altitude: 4,000 meters (13,123 feet) at Chandrashila Peak
• Total Trek Distance: Around 9 kilometers round trip from Chopta to Chandrashila via Tungnath
• Difficulty Level: Easy to Moderate (manageable for fit beginners)
• Duration: 3 Days / 2 Nights from Haridwar or Rishikesh

Pro Tip: Don't skip your cardio workouts for the two weeks leading up to this trip. The final push from Tungnath to Chandrashila is a steep, boulder-strewn staircase that will get your heart pounding.

Best Time to Visit

Timing makes or breaks this trek. If you want lush green meadows and clear blue skies, target the summer months between April and June. If you're chasing snow and want to see the Tungnath temple blanketed in a thick white layer, go between December and February. Monsoon (July to August) brings slippery trails and leech issues, so I usually advise skipping those months unless you love rain-soaked solitude.

How to Reach Chopta Tungnath Chandrashila Trek

Getting to Chopta requires a bit of travel, as there is no direct railway station or airport nearby. The closest major hub is Dehradun (Jolly Grant Airport) or Rishikesh.

• By Air: Fly into Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, which is about 220 kilometers from Chopta. From the airport, hire a private taxi (around ₹4,500 to ₹5,500) or take a bus to Rishikesh and connect further.
• By Train: Rishikesh Railway Station and Haridwar Junction are the best rail heads. Haridwar is 225 kilometers away. You can catch shared jeeps or hire a private cab straight to Chopta.
• By Road: Drive or take a bus from Delhi via Rishikesh, Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Ukimath. The total drive from Delhi is roughly 410 kilometers and takes about 11 to 12 hours.

Getting Around

Once you arrive in Chopta, everything revolves around walking. The town itself is essentially a tiny settlement along the road with a few dhabas and camps. To reach local trailheads or nearby spots like Deoria Tal, you'll need to rely on local jeeps or pre-booked cabs. Shared jeeps run intermittently between Ukimath and Chopta, but they aren't always reliable on strict schedules.

Pro Tip: If you're arriving by public bus from Rishikesh, get off at Ukimath and hire a local cab for the remaining 30-kilometer drive to Chopta. It saves hours of waiting.

Top Things to Do

Your 3-day itinerary is packed with high-impact experiences. Here is how your days should flow:

Day 1: Arrival in Chopta and Sunset at Utsav Chopta Viewpoint

Arrive in Chopta by afternoon. Check into your campsite or eco-lodge. Spend the afternoon walking around the local meadows to acclimatize. Head to the small ridge behind the main market area—often called the Utsav Viewpoint—to watch the sun dip behind the Chaukhamba peak range. It turns the snow a brilliant shade of orange.

Day 2: Chopta to Tungnath Temple, Chandrashila Peak, and Back

Start your day early at 5:00 AM. The 3.5-kilometer trek from Chopta to Tungnath takes about 2 hours on a paved stone path. Pay your respects at Tungnath, the highest of the Panch Kedar temples, sitting at 3,680 meters. After a quick tea break at the stalls near the temple, push through the final 1.5 kilometers of steep rocky trail up to Chandrashila Peak. The 360-degree view of Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, and Kedarnath peaks is worth every drop of sweat. Hike back down to Chopta by afternoon.

Day 3: Morning Sunrise Walk and Departure

Catch the early morning light hitting the pine trees. After a heavy breakfast of parathas and chai, pack your bags. If you have extra time, take a short detour to Sari Village to see Deoria Tal before heading back to Rishikesh or Haridwar.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

Most travelers rush through Chopta, do the main trek, and leave. If you want a quieter experience, walk past the main Chopta Bugyal meadows toward Rohini Bugyal. It's a lesser-known meadow trail that offers phenomenal wildlife spotting opportunities, including the elusive Himalayan Monal if you're quiet and lucky at dawn.

Another hidden spot is the ancient Shiva shrine tucked inside a dense oak forest about two kilometers down the Ukimath road. Ask any local tea vendor for directions to the 'Buransh forest trail,' and they'll point you toward a gorgeous, moss-covered path free of selfie-sticks.

Accommodation Guide

Chopta isn't a luxury resort destination; it's about rustic charm and sleeping under the stars. You'll find Swiss tents, eco-lodges, and basic homestays.

• Swiss Camps (Chopta Camps, Maggu Chatti Camps): Great for groups, offering attached toilets and bonfires at night.
• Homestays (Mayali Homestay in Sari Village): Best for experiencing local Garhwali hospitality and homemade food.
• Forest Rest Houses: Requires advance online booking through the Uttarakhand forest department portal.

Where to Eat (local food guide)

Food options in Chopta are simple, wholesome, and hot. Don't expect multi-cuisine menus. Instead, embrace the local mountain dhabas.

• Pahadi Maggi: A ritual on every mountain trek, loaded with local spices and veggies.
• Aloo Ke Gutke: Spiced boiled potato cubes tossed in mustard oil, local herbs, and fresh coriander, best eaten with hot puris.
• Mandua Ki Roti with Gahat Dal: A traditional, nutrient-dense finger millet flatbread paired with horse gram lentil soup. Perfect for keeping warm at high altitudes.

Try the tiny wooden shack run by Sharma Ji right at the start of the Tungnath trail. His ginger-lemon honey tea has revived thousands of tired trekkers.

Budget Breakdown (with INR tables)

Here is what a standard 3-day trip from Rishikesh to Chopta will actually cost you per person on a twin-sharing basis.

Packing Checklist

Packing right means the difference between a comfortable hike and a miserable freeze.

• Footwear: Sturdy trekking shoes with good ankle support and extra woolen socks.
• Clothing: Layering is key. Thermal innerwear, a fleece jacket, and a windproof/waterproof outer shell jacket.
• Gear: Trekking poles (lifesavers on the descent from Chandrashila), a 20-30L backpack, and a headlamp.
• Hydration & Snacks: Reusable water bottle, energy bars, and oral rehydration salts (ORS).
• First Aid: Band-aids, painkillers, motion sickness pills, and Diamox (consult your doctor first for altitude sickness).

Common Mistake: Packing too heavy. Leave your large trolley bags in your vehicle or at your base hotel in Rishikesh. Only carry what you need for the two nights on the mountain.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes

Mountain weather changes in a heartbeat. Here is how to stay safe.

• Stay Hydrated: Dehydration sneaks up on you quickly at high altitudes. Drink at least 3 liters of water daily.
• No Alcohol: Drinking alcohol at high altitudes constricts blood vessels and worsens acute mountain sickness (AMS).
• Respect the Wildlife: Do not litter the trails with plastic wrappers. Pack out everything you bring in.

Common Mistake: Rushing the ascent to Chandrashila. Walk at a steady, conversational pace—what guides call 'pahadi chaal'—to let your body adjust to the thin air.

Nearby Attractions

If you have an extra day to spare, don't miss these spots:

• Deoria Tal: A high-altitude lake famous for its pristine reflections of Chaukhamba peak. It's a short 2.5-kilometer trek from Sari village.
• Ukimath: The winter seat of Lord Kedarnath and Madhyamaheshwar. Great for cultural immersion and stone architecture.
• Anusuya Devi Temple: A secluded trek starting from Mandal village leading to a tranquil forest shrine and waterfall.
