Delhi to Chopta Budget Trip: Route, Cost & Itinerary (2026 Guide)

Introduction

If you're staring at your office laptop in Delhi and dreaming of snow-capped peaks that won't cost a month's rent, Chopta is your answer. Known locally as the 'Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand', this tiny hamlet sits at 2,680 meters and serves as the base camp for the Tungnath-Chandrashila trek.

I’ve driven and taken public buses up this route half a dozen times over the last decade. The charm hasn't faded, but the crowds have grown. If you want to experience pristine bugyals (alpine meadows) without burning a hole in your pocket, you need a solid plan.

This guide breaks down the exact bus routes, secret campsites, realistic costs in INR, and a 3-day itinerary that actually works. Let’s get into the details.

Quick Facts About Delhi to Chopta

• Distance from Delhi: Approx. 400 to 450 km depending on the route you take.
• Driving Time: 10 to 12 hours by car; 14 to 16 hours by public transport.
• Highest Altitude: Chandrashila Peak at 4,000 meters (13,123 feet).
• Network Connectivity: BSNL works best. Jio has intermittent 4G at Chopta market. Airtel is mostly dead once you pass Rudraprayag.
• ATM Availability: Last reliable ATMs are at Ukhimath. Carry enough physical cash.

Best Time to Visit

Chopta changes personality every single season. If you want carpets of wildflowers, come in summer. If you want knee-deep snow and empty trails, winter is your friend.

• March to June (Summer): Weather is crisp, ranging from 10°C to 25°C. Rhododendrons are in full bloom, painting the forest bright red. This is peak season for families and amateur trekkers.
• July to September (Monsoon): Landslides are common on the Rishikesh-Badrinath highway. I don’t recommend budget travelers risk getting stuck unless you have buffer days.
• October to November (Autumn): Skies are crystal clear, offering jaw-dropping views of Chaukhamba and Nanda Devi peaks. Temps drop to 5°C at night.
• December to February (Winter): Heavy snowfall blocks roads temporarily. Chopta turns into a white wonderland. You'll need micro-spikes for your shoes if you plan to summit Chandrashila.

Weather Guide

Pro Tip: If you hate crowds, visit between March 10th and 25th. You’ll catch the red rhododendrons blooming before the April rush hits.

How to Reach Chopta from Delhi

Getting from Delhi to Chopta on a budget requires a mix of overnight buses and shared local jeeps (Sumos).

Step 1: Delhi to Rishikesh / Haridwar / Rudraprayag

• By Bus: Take an overnight Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (UTC) bus or a private Volvo from Kashmere Gate ISBT or Anand Vihar to Rishikesh or Rudraprayag. Cost: ₹500 - ₹1,200. Buses leave every hour between 8:00 PM and 11:00 PM.
• By Train: Take the Yoga Express (19032) or Mussoorie Express (14041) to Haridwar or Rishikesh. Cost: ₹200 (Sleeper) to ₹700 (3AC).

Step 2: Rishikesh to Ukhimath / Chopta

• From Rishikesh GMVN bus stand, grab an early morning shared Sumo or bus heading towards Ukhimath, Gopeshwar, or Chopta (via Kund).
• A shared cab from Rishikesh to Ukhimath costs around ₹600 - ₹800 per seat and takes roughly 6 to 7 hours.
• If you can't find a direct vehicle to Chopta, take a shared cab to Ukhimath first, then hire a local taxi or catch the lone morning bus from Ukhimath to Chopta.

Getting Around

Chopta itself is a tiny stretch of road. You don't need local transport once you are at the meadows—everything is explored on foot.

• Trekking: The main route from Chopta to Tungnath Temple is 3.5 km of paved stone path. From Tungnath to Chandrashila is another 1.5 km of steep rocky trail.
• Local Cabs: If you miss the return shared jeeps, hiring a private Alto from Chopta down to Ukhimath will set you back about ₹1,500 - ₹2,000. Always bargain politely.

Top Things to Do

• Trek to Tungnath: Hike the 3.5 km trail to reach the highest Shiva temple in the world, sitting at 3,680 meters. The stone path is manageable for anyone with basic fitness.
• Summit Chandrashila: Push past Tungnath for another 45 minutes to reach Chandrashila peak. You'll get a 360-degree panorama of the Himalayan giants including Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, and Kedarnath peaks.
• Stargazing at Chopta Meadows: Because there is minimal light pollution, the night sky here is a masterpiece. Pull up a camping chair and watch the Milky Way stretch across the peaks.
• Bird Watching: Chopta and the surrounding Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary are a paradise for birders. Keep your eyes peeled for the Himalayan Monal, the state bird of Uttarakhand.

Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path

• Deoria Tal: Most tourists combine Deoria Tal with Chopta, but skip the crowded base village of Sari. Instead, hike up an hour earlier than the tour groups at 5:00 AM to catch the reflection of Chaukhamba peak in the lake without a single soul around.
• Rohini Bugyal: Located on the trek route between Chopta and Deoria Tal, this alpine meadow sees a fraction of the tourists that Tungnath gets. It’s an ideal spot for a quiet picnic lunch.

Accommodation Guide

Budget travel in Chopta means choosing between eco-lodges, homestays, and Swiss tents.

• Swiss Camps & Tents: Renting a basic tent with foam mattresses and shared washrooms costs around ₹800 - ₹1,200 per night, including dinner and breakfast.
• Homestays in Ukhimath: If you want a concrete roof and hot water, stay in Ukhimath (14 km from Chopta). Guesthouses here cost ₹800 - ₹1,500 per night.
• GMVN Tourist Rest House: Located right at Chopta, basic rooms can be booked online via the Uttarakhand tourism portal for around ₹1,500.

Where to Eat

Food options in Chopta are simple, hearty, and comforting. Don't expect fancy menus.

• Chopta Market Dhabas: Grab piping hot Aloo Parathas with local white butter and masala chai at any of the tin-shed dhabas lining the main road. Cost: ₹100.
• Local Pahadi Thali: Try regional dishes like gahat ki dal, mandua ki roti, and jhangore ki kheer at small family-run eateries in Ukhimath. Cost: ₹150 - ₹250.
• Maggi Points: Every kilometer on the Tungnath trek features a small shack selling instant noodles and boiled eggs. It tastes ten times better at 3,500 meters.
