Introduction
I’ve driven from Delhi to the foothills of Uttarakhand more times than I can count. Most online itineraries suggest impossible schedules—like trying to cover Dehradun, Mussoorie, Rishikesh, and Nainital all in five days. You’ll spend half your trip staring at tailpipe emissions on the NH334 instead of looking at pine trees.
Let's do this right. For a tight 5-day window, you need a focused route. We'll base our journey around Dehradun, Mussoorie, and the quiet edges of Kanatal. I'll give you exact timings, real costs in Indian Rupees, and the local eateries that actually serve fresh food instead of reheated dal makhani.

Best Time to Visit
If you want pleasant weather without being stuck in monsoon landslides or freezing winter traffic, March to June and September to November are your sweet spots. July and August bring heavy rains, making the Delhi-Dehradun highway a muddy crawl.
Pro Tip: Avoid heading up on Friday evening unless you enjoy spending four hours just getting past the Meerut bypass.

How to Reach Uttarakhand from Delhi
Driving is by far the most flexible option. Take the Delhi-Meerut Expressway (NE 3) out of Delhi, connect to NH334 through Muzaffarnagar and Roorkee, and head straight into Dehradun. The entire 260 km stretch takes about 5.5 to 6 hours if you start by 5:00 AM.
If you prefer trains, the Vande Bharat Express (22457) from Anand Vihar to Dehradun takes under 5 hours and is remarkably comfortable. From the Dehradun railway station, you can hire local cabs.
Getting Around
Once you reach the foothills, public buses are cheap but infrequent for remote viewpoints. Renting a self-drive hatchback or SUV from Delhi (via services like Zoomcar) costs roughly ₹2,000 to ₹3,500 per day plus fuel. If you're hiring a dedicated cab with a driver from Delhi for the 5 days, expect to pay around ₹12,000 to ₹16,000 all-inclusive.
Top Things to Do
- Day 1: Delhi to Dehradun & Robber’s Cave: Leave Delhi at 5 AM. Grab breakfast at Pawan Dhaba near Khatauli (try their tandoori parathas with white butter). Reach Dehradun by noon, check into your hotel, and head straight to Guchhupani (Robber's Cave) for a refreshing walk through the narrow river cave.
- Day 2: Drive up to Mussoorie & Camel’s Back Road: Drive 35 km up the winding hills to Mussoorie. Walk the historic Camel’s Back Road at sunset for sweeping valley views without the Mall Road chaos.
- Day 3: Kempty Falls & Cloud’s End: Skip the commercialized main Kempty Falls area and visit the quieter Mossy Falls instead. Spend your afternoon hiking out to Cloud's End, the western extremity of Mussoorie.
- Day 4: Day Trip to Kanatal: Drive an hour past Dhanaulti to the sleepy hamlet of Kanatal. It's drastically less crowded than Mussoorie and offers phenomenal views of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks.
- Day 5: Return to Delhi: Stock up on local Kumaoni buransh juice and Dehradun bakery rusks from Kwality Bakery on Mall Road before driving back down to Delhi.
Hidden Gems & Off-the-Beaten-Path
Skip the crowded Lal Tibba viewpoint where everyone fights for telescope space. Instead, walk 1 kilometer further down the unpaved trail toward Sisters Bazaar and grab an incredible peanut butter cookie and espresso from the tiny Landour Bakehouse.
Another spot most tourists miss is the George Everest House ruins. While the main bungalow gets busy, the ridge behind it offers silent walking trails overlooking the Aglar River valley.
Accommodation Guide
Depending on your travel style, Uttarakhand offers everything from rustic homestays to luxury heritage properties.
Where to Eat (Local Food Guide)
Don't just eat hotel buffets. Look for authentic Garhwali dishes like Aloo ke Gutke (spiced fried potatoes), Kachmauli (local spiced mutton), and Chainsoo (a rich, slow-cooked black gram dal).
- Char Dukan (Landour): Famous for pancakes, maggi, and lemon ginger tea perched right on a mountain ridge.
- Ellora’s Melting Moments (Dehradun): Iconic local bakery famous for its roasted fruit biscuits and creamy pastries.
- Kalsang Friends Corner (Mussoorie): Outstanding Tibetan and Chinese food when you want a break from North Indian curries.

Safety Tips & Common Mistakes
Common Mistake: Driving down mountain slopes with your foot resting on the brake pedal. This burns out your brake pads within 20 kilometers. Always use engine braking by shifting into a lower gear (2nd gear).
Keep your fuel tank full. Petrol pumps get scarce once you leave Dehradun and head deep into the Dhanaulti-Kanatal belt. Always carry cash, as digital payment scanners frequently drop out due to poor network signals in deep valleys.
Nearby Attractions
If you have an extra two days to spare, consider extending your trip down to Rishikesh for river rafting or heading further north into Chakrata for pristine waterfalls and zero commercial tourism.
